I have yet to laugh even once

Hollywood thinks everything that isnt a serious drama or action show is a comedy. Wrong. You're supposed to actually make people laugh. That is the definition of a comedy. Not go out of your way to shock or offend them. If you took out the curse words and sex references the show would be about five minutes long. You would think with the talent they have on the show it would be better but its not. And when did Christa Miller turn into the Joker? Its painful to watch. Harrison Ford is horribly miscast. Jason Segal is trying to carry the whole show. Thank goodness real therapist are nothing like these people.

Cliche, awful, waste of time.

Terrible. Jason Segel has made himself a typecast cliche, and not in a good way. Unfunny, cliche, predictable, and a pure waste of time. Unfortunately I've found most of the good reviews extremely pretentious. People saying they liked this because they think they're supposed to like it without much substantive review content. We all know that phenomenon. Moments of cringe and unfunny moments. Recycled jokes, regurgitated writing, could simply be a hybrid continuation of I Love You Man and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Segel rehashes a character we've already met, on several occasions. I like Jason Segel, and I wanted to love this simply because of his involvement. I take no pleasure in writing this review, just know this is a disappointing waste of time.

Shrinking's' Overbearing Humor and Language

The idea of the show is great but the execution was poor and shallow. The premise of a therapist navigating grief and ethical boundaries has potential. The performances, especially from the lead, exhibit glimpses of emotional depth and complexity.

One of the show's prominent drawbacks lies in its overwhelming reliance on humor. While comedy can enrich a storyline, "Shrinking" seems to overdose on it. The banter, especially between Jessica Williams and Christa Miller's characters, often feels forced and reminiscent of adolescent conversations. This incessant pursuit of jokes detracts from the potential depth the show could have explored within its themes.

Moreover, the frequent and gratuitous use of explicit language becomes distracting. While occasional strong language can add authenticity, its excessive presence feels unnecessary and fails to enhance the narrative. It tends to overshadow the substance that the storyline could offer.

For viewers expecting a balanced blend of humor and depth, this series disappoint. Its overemphasis on humor and language overshadow the potential for exploring the intricacies of grief and personal boundaries.

Massively overrated.

How do I get these jobs puffing up product on IMDB? This was completely forgettable. Harrison Ford must be trying to insure his estate is strong before death. The material wasn't worth it. But don't worry, there will be the quirky black woman, the angry black man, and the super gay lawyer and a Telsa so you know it is modern and climate friendly. All with another trope that is really getting to me... the man who's wife died in a car accident. Is this an apple mandate as I just saw it on severance. Anyone as selfish and stupid as the main character in this show would be dancing for joy that his wife died and married to someone much younger than him in 4 months. Not buying that Jason Segal's wife dying mentally destroyed him enough for this show.

Senseless, you can't make heads or tails of what or why in this show.

Cumbersome and pathetic in its presentation, Shrinking has no character growth, no sense in its dialogue or in its protagonist's behavior, and is haphazard, erratic and ridiculous. No serious consideration was given to the background, profession, or authenticity of the lead or any of the supporting characters. If you're old enough to recall the "feel good" movies of the 90's, then you'll identify this show as one of those vapid, over-the-moon goofy and merry to the point of vomit inducing productions.

Like so many senseless industry shows before it, Shrinking's premise is actually extremely sound: a therapist chooses to break with proper psychological etiquette and involve himself in his patient's lives. Sadly, we don't get to see a reason for this decision to materialize. The writers don't even allow the viewer to see a transformation in the protagonist towards this choice! Instead, the effect of this life changing resolution results in immature antics and complete chaos instead of thought provoking or inspirational events based in what could have been plausible reality. This writing choice WOULD have been fine IF what ensued were funny, but it's not. "Shrinking" attempts to be hilarious, only to fail horribly, landing face first in its shenanigans and childish foolishness.

"Shrinking" is what happens when you put incompetent activists in a writing room and pay thousands of dollars to invite an established celebrity to inflate the hype around a production that's been given no effort or attention. It's a cash grab: an attempt to get you to pay for a show based on the fact that Harrison Ford is involved... and that's it! A complete waste of time and a massive headache, if you try to make sense of it.

I felt my brain shrinking during this tv show

Seriously? I don't think this show is worth watching as I literally feel my brain is shrinking during watching all the episodes of season 1. It had its moment of community feel and friendship but those moments were shrinking till a complete state of a shock. Now, they just normalized and made fun of murder, profanity and real intimacy. What is next? Transforming little babies into different genders, marriage between a dog and a man?, intimate relations as a therapy for all? While munching on magic candy? This field of psychiatry was always about experimentation and as this show proves again, the doctors are the best patients. The show feels like "Friends" with some psych jargon mixed in. Now I pronounce you husbands, and I pronounce it is time to switch off tv, and especially apple tv with their placed advertisements.

workplace drama where nobody works

Drug and alcohol abuse, rampant promiscuity, grifty pseudo-scientific 'therapy', full-blown narcissism, excruciatingly self-conscious 'racialism', loads upon loads of f-bombs... and parenting. All set in an idealistic urban-living & fashion catalog.

This could be savage satire, or a subtle kind of horror, but there's no clues/queues of this being the intention here. Its as if the show is sincerely trying to be a mildly humorous urban drama.

The show also heavily features that American trope of a father desperately trying to make their kids love & hug them, which may be too weird & unnatural for some viewers.

Don't waste your time!

It's so bad that I can't understand how it's not canceled yet. Maybe it's for teenagers? Because I don't get it that exaggeration and really dumb slang used by the actor who plays Gaby. The main character is cringy and really unrealistic. Absurd and really bad acting. I'm not familiar with this actor's work but really really bad. As Gaby character is also bad acting. I've never seen anything worse yet.

I can't believe some TV shows like Shantaram are canceled and get no views but this pointless, empty and embarrassing thing is still going on. Can't imagine any person in a clear mind watching this.

I failed to laugh if it's a comedy. Looks like a school thing. But even schools can make better stuff.

A massively overrated show that brings nothing to the table

First, it's not funny. Like at all. Second, the storyline is so flat an tedious that I had to watch in fast-forward not to fall asleep.

Oh, the guy is so smart, he tells a woman to leave her abusive husband, I guess he must have studied years to come up with that. Or he advises a violent guy to do some martial arts, another stroke of genius!

And they talk, gosh they talk... Empty words, empty sentences. Archetypal characters, dialogs you heard a 1000 times before. To me, it's simply unbearable to watch. I can't begin to fathom how much the cast was paid, let alone the writers. It's pretty awful, period.

A Shallow and Forced Attempt at Heartfelt Comedy

"Shrinking" feels more like a corporate product than a show driven by genuine creativity. It's as if the writers have never truly experienced the complexities of life, resulting in a narrative that comes across as naive, childish, and inauthentic. Rather than telling a story that unfolds naturally, the show seems like an artificial project conceptualized by an Apple board of directors, injecting their values and ideas into it to fill their content library. This leaves little room for organic storytelling or emotional depth.

The attempts at comedy often fall flat, with cringe-worthy moments that feel forced, childish and awkward. The tone is all over the place, trying too hard to balance humor and drama, but ultimately failing to do justice to either. Even the music feels on the nose, dictating emotions instead of letting scenes breathe naturally.

Despite a talented cast, the characters feel like underdeveloped caricatures, and the plot arcs are disappointingly predictable. While the premise had potential, the execution is weighed down by its lack of authenticity and depth. Overall, Shrinking feels like a missed opportunity to explore real human struggles in a meaningful way.

Talk, talk, talk, and more talk

97% of this show is talking. Two people talking in an office, two people talking at home, two people talking while they do a run, two people talking over a cell phone. Other than the constant talking between two (or three) people, nothing hardly happens. The only times we see any kind of activity was a minor car collision and two punches in faces.

The Jason Segel character is a woeful person who is trying to get over his wife's death...a story plot line which has been used too often in stories. And I still don't know why the writers of this show felt compelled to give the Harrison Ford's character a case of Parkinson's disease...so far it has nothing to do with anything.

sleeping with dad's friend to show him is okay

This series certainly shifts the Overton Window by normalizing things like "sleeping with dad's friend to show him."

What's also happening is habitual abuse, such as calling colleagues names, cuckolding, elderly abuse (transporting Harrison Ford's character against his will to locations he expressly doesn't want to go), normalization of invasion of privacy and violation of boundaries (barging into personal offices while occupied, to get one's will), reinforcment of incel phantasies ("do you think he scores a lot of women with that face?!").

For a show that's supposedly about the psych side to life it's regularly just shocking and the opposite to what you would expect.

More F-bombs than Comedy

Started off really good with great comedy and interesting story lines, but by episode 3 it seemed as though the F-bomb count per episode became the MAIN focus of the show. I usually have no problem with foul language in programs that I watch, but this was painful! There are so many other words available that the writers could have used. With so few really good series available, it's sad that such a promising comedy series would so quickly sink to the point of being unwatchable. Started out as a winner, ended up being a major failure. The continued success and high ratings only makes me shake my head at the current state of our society.

Biggest letdown in many years

I can't believe Harrison Ford signed on for this unbelievably unfunny show by the creator of Scrubs, one of my all-time favorite comedy-shows. This was bafflingly bad. Rich people behaving weird with no relatability at all in any interaction or dialogue. And whats worse, even if one of the shows subgenres is comedy, it doesnt make you even smile once throughout its pretentious and stilted season. I sincerely hope it gets cancelled soon so history can forget this abysmal stain on Harrison Ford and Bill Lawrence carreers. Truly awful in every sense of the word. Seriously cant remember the last time i was this disappointed in a show.
