Harrison Ford and Jason Segel in Shrinking (2023)

Good premise ruined by annoying characters

Gaby is the most annoying character on the whole show. EVERY episode she has to refer to her skin color or someone else's and I'm not even kidding. It's EVERY episode. It's like the writers just can't help themselves. The kids are something else too, they just can't seem to respect their parents. Paul is receiving a lifetime achievement award, no biggie, so he invites his estranged daughter and family, she flat out declines, chalking it up to 'work always comes first, family second'. Yeah. Harrison Ford is wasted in the show and doesn't receive enough script. Most of the time it's Jason Segal or the Gaby character. The jokes don't land most of the time.

Insanely shallow

I don't know, maybe this is what people need right now... But this series look like it is written by some whitest, Starbucks slurping, middle aged person without any clue how real life works. And I know this is supposed to be comedy/drama and not some dark, psychological thriller but come on! You can write this kind of stuff and be authentic! And this series looks like a freakin plastic ice cream. I enjoyed some scenes and gave it a try but overall I'm disappointed by lack of authenticity. Especially if it is about psychotherapist and serious topics. Creators of this series made this job look like an easy peasy joke. Not nice.

Excellent acting, just a boring script

Not funny or interesting. I don't think I even chuckled during the whole episode. I certainly didn't laugh. Is it supposed to be a comedy or a drama? I think it was meant to be a comedy, but it's unfunny.

I was really looking forward to this due to the promos with Harrison Ford in them, but I am sadly disappointed. Segal's acting is excellent in his part, it's just not interesting. The only character I remotely cared about is Gabby.

Maybe this gets better. I'll give it another week. It's a great concept, but the follow through isn't there. The acting is very good. The writing, not so much.

5 stars for the actors.

Aimless

This show is so utterly pointless. There is nothing of substance here. It is a cast of 6 over exaggerated characters interacting with each other in rather abhorrent ways. I find the way they display relationships to be quite dysfunctional and morally wrong. What is this show for? Who is this show for? How in the world does it have 8 stars?

If you find this show humorous you have the sense of humor of a hormonal 12 year old boy, watching this show merely because he shouldn't.

People hail the fresh story and script writing. I couldn't disagree more. Never in my life have I ever seen people interact with each in reality, as they do in this show. The dialogue is so inauthentic & makes me want to cringe.

It started out on the right foot, but quickly went down the sewer pipe of easy comedy and aimless episodic plots. It simply leads nowhere.

The redeeming qualities of the show are the quick moments revealing Jason Segel's characters pain. That is when it feels authentic and hearty. Jason Segel carries this show on his shoulders. But not even he can carry this heavy mess of a show.

NOT Ted Lasso

One review said that if you like Ted Lasso, you'll like this. I LOVE Ted Lasso and I don't like this. They are not at all alike.

I really wanted to like this, so watched it and gave it a fair try for one season. The actors are good, but, to me, they didn't jell. And Harrison Ford was a weak link. Sorry, he isn't funny (to me).

It isn't smooth, like Ted Lasso. It isn't sweet and surprising like Lasso. It is more in-your-face. I want to say like Scrubs, but again, it doesn't jell like Scrubs did.

All in all, it's a decent show with a good cast that has it's moments. There are just too few of them for me to watch.

But give it a go and see if it's for you!

This gets boring after a while

Started well, and I liked the premise that the shrink decides to tell his patients the truth, but that all seems to go by the wayside as the show ends up disappearing up its own backside and becomes ultimely concerned only with a small groups of relationships.

To add to the tedium, all the characters speak with the same voice and lexicon regardless of age or circumstance, and that voice is modern teenage angst. It gets boring and I lost interest by episode 8, especially as there's no significant plot development, either.

Maybe this shows works for the younger generation, but I wanted something more creative.

This is no Ted Lasso ....

I think they were hoping to replicate the success of Ted Lasso but while it has some very limited charm it falls well short of that mark. Jason Siegel is adequate at best, the rest of the cast somewhat better. Much has been made of Harrison Fords surprising comedic capabilities - perhaps it's too early but so far it's a few hints only. And as for the physical slapstick elements they're clumsy and obvious. In fact there's really nothing about this show that displays wit, grace, style or subtlety. I'll stick with it and see how it grows. The daughter character has some promise. I live in hope as always that a cast of this calibre will find their tempo and deliver something great in time, having lulled me into a false sense of poor expectation.

What's with all the F word? Yuck...

It's so annoying. It's like the writers couldn't figure out what to say so they inserted the F word in every single sentence spoken by every single character except for Harrison Ford. It's really really bad. If you took it out...the episodes would last 15 minutes. I personally don't know anyone who talks like that...and certainly not professionals or in a health care setting. It's trashy as much as it's spoken. It's gotten to the point where I don't care if I watch it because I'm going to have to listen to the F word 5000 times in 10 minutes. Is that dialogue? Meh...it's just okay. I would like it better if they spoke normal. Better things to watch.

Disappointing, generally

I was expecting better. Harrison Ford with had lacklustre performance. He was much better in 1923. Most often his facial expressions look forced with little effort put into his character portrayal. The story writing got more boring as the episodes progressed. I didn't really see a beginning or an end as the series progressed. The gays didn't add anything to the show. I was hoping to give the show an "8" rating, and that's the optimism I went in with. But as the series progressed, I kept knocking a point off until the end when I was glad it was all finally over and gave it a final "5". Disappointed.

Not much of a comedy, not much of a drama

This is a sweet show with absolutely no edge. It aims to be funny, but usually only manages to be mildly amusing. It aims to be moving, but never really delves under the surface of what the characters are going through. Seldom does the dialogue ring true (who talks like that?) and there is rarely a spark between any of the characters. We're supposed to believe that they have affection for each other, but not one of the relationships is convincing. The problem here is not the acting (the cast is full of actors with impressive credits to their names) but the writing, which is lazy and limp and, above all, never believable.

Doesn't quite know what it wants to be

First of all, the acting is fine and the premise sounded interesting. IMDB lists this as "Comedy" and "Drama" but sadly this is neither. It's certainly not funny but it's also too quirky to make the "dramatic" moments work. Overall, this just falls on its nose somewhere in the middle.

Another issue I have is that there doesn't seem to be a hook to keep people watching. The show's description talks about a therapist going off the rails with unconventional and honest advice. As a premise, this sounds interesting but the patients are all fairly flat caricatures so who cares.

Lastly, There were about half a dozen racial remarks in the first two episodes that came out of nowhere and felt very out of place. It's like someone randomly starting every second sentence with "As a white guy,...". It wasn't funny and it wasn't really commenting on anything. Apparently people just like mentioning the colour of their skin in this show for no reason.

Good Enough

"Shrinking" is a dramedy about a psychologist who is struggling to get through his wife's death. And through his healing journey, he has his friends and coworkers on his side.

First of all, the family drama was spot on. Father and daughter had nice chemistry and their interactions were original and life like.

The friendship part was also pretty solid, and the main source of the comedy outbursts.

And even though there were some really entertaining and enjoyable episodes, others were quite blunt, especially those towards the ending. In those, only Harrison Ford's character was what kept things interesting.

So, overall, an interesting series that is still trying to find its footing.

Good Effort But Why Spoil It

The profanity is constant & ruins the dialogue.

I can't understand why the prolific use of the F word is used.

It is especially sad & horrid to see it used with talented veteran actors like Harrison Ford.

There is too much talk about sex & slimy inendos.

The cast gels well & the acting has a good pace.

It is shallow, but aside from the above negatives, it would be good if some thoughtful polish were given.

It's disturbing that directors & producers don't make an effort to make more clean living shows.

Sometimes there is nothing else to watch-but that doesn't mean that they should not try harder.

Having to filter out all the garbage dialogue is a sign that it is not ideal.

Poor people's Dag (Norwegian TV Show)

My first review, and although I am an IMBd member for a loooong time; haven't felt compelled to review anything ever...

So, without further ado, I shall say this:

Instead of Shrinking, go and see Dag (Norwegian TV Show).

Dag is a masterpiece of a European and, moreover, Scandinavian TV production. Once upon a time, American TV Shows used to resemble such quality, but not anymore...

Back to Shrinking. It is not good. It's forced, Unnatural. Farced...

JS is bad enough of an actor able to ruin infinitely better scripts, let alone this one. HF should retire much more gracefully...

My score is 5/10.

BAD MUSIC that is awful on my ears.

So, this show is actually really funny at times... a clever dramedy... BUT the TERRIBLE and DEAFENING soundtrack... full of these awful indie-pop songs... I just can't take it. At all. I cannot continue the show after two episodes. The music is so jarring and awful it makes me want to drop dead. I can not take this music. And normally I can tolerate songs I'm not into but the fact of the matter is that every 60 seconds some song starts blasting it's first couple bars while someone is riding a bicycle to work or walking into a store or something. It can't be ignored. You are just forced to experience it and it's CRANKED up to 11 in the mix. It also clashes with subject matter, kind of saying "hey all this stuff happening to this guy is terrible but isn't life ironic and cute?!" which is completely unnecessary and lame. There's also a lot of... oh, dear, I hate this word... "inclusion" in the show that comes off as ultra-cringe because it feels forced and unnatural. I'm all about a diverse cast and characters, but a straight man kissing their gay best friend on the forehead and lines like "I'm white and this is Pasedena, they'll probably just take my car home for me," totally take me out of what would be an almost believable plot. C'mon... people don't behave like this! The show is trying to be so 2023 it's unbearable. A straight man can be best friends with a gay man and not kiss him on his forehead when he says goodbye. A white person CAN be friends with a black person WITHOUT acknowledging their white privilege. Trust me, I do it all the time with my very diverse set of friends and family of all different races, creeds, and sexualities. Putting things like this in the show just makes it seem awkward. Let's just let people of different races hang out together without having to acknowledge it every five seconds... and let's let straight and gay people hang out together without having to put their lips on each other. It just comes off as forced and not believable. Let's just stop trying to be cute here and keep the show funny (because Jason Segel is actually very funny) and just lose all this fluffy crap that is so insanely distracting cringy. Please. Just stop trying to be cute and stick to being funny, heartwarming, clever.

Fun, but with some forced wokism

This show is good. Very good. The characters, story and casting are spot-on. It's enjoyable to watch and the chemistry between the main characters is awesome. My review would be a 7 or 8 if it weren't for the forced Gay couple in the show. It just doesn't fit. The backstory, friendships and history just don't fit the liberal narrative that's obviously pushed into the show. Other than that it's well worth watching. Without it pushed in there, the show would be amazing. The four main actors are a joy to watch. The writing is amazing as well. We're so ready for season 2!!!! If you're looking for a new show to binge. This is a good one.

Great talent, but more of the same

This show had me in stiches. I wasn't expecting a lot but I was killing myself laughing with the script and character development, up until the time it became about skin colour, blah blah blah etc. I am so sick of this narrative being rammed down my throat. The actors are all great, and if it were another time in visual media where this was just a character flaw I wouldn't care. But this is not only excessive it is divisive in today's current offering.

Such a talented group of actors being told and bred to stick to the script that only a minority wants and most of the rest will say nothing for fear of retribution.

Park the crap and entertain me, the rest needs to be left out of productions immediately.

Perfect round shape of feel-good, what was cut to make a perfect square?

Its sacrificing everything else for the feel-good. The humor and characters gets fuzzy edges to make the whole show a comfort blanket feel-good vibe.

Since need to write 600s words to waste your time with details whats below:

Its lacking punchy humor and real bite and seriousness/realness all sacrificed for the goal of feel-good. Ill say this about it someone from above really pushed this into a perfect round shape of feel-good and cut everything that did not fit.

Apple tv shows has a feel to them the same way Disney animations or Hallmark shows has a feel to them. Some shows seems to have more freedom but its always there.

The actors are great, it looks amazing. Technically its great it oozes money, someone threw money and talent on this. Not in love with the sound not at the same amazing level as the rest technical aspects.

The writing is like a really good script toke a LOT of calming drugs and what was sharp now has this pleasant fuzzy edge to it. Someone makes a biting remark but its a half smile and a nudge and we're all friends here at the same time feel. So kind of no real errors of writing other then a overwhelming numb feel to every single thing a wet blanket over the whole thing which is clearly entirely intentional.

Think Ted Lasso is casting its shadow over this show and not in a good way.

what happened?

I really liked season 1. It had this understaded magic to it, each character felt unique and its beauty was in the subtleties, the little moments that make your heart a little warmer.

Season 2... all characters now act like they're 12. The therapists are the worst. I'm constantly rolling my eyes at the "problems" they create for themselves and others. The script is so bad and moronic you can actually see the actors struggle with it.

Why does the industry keep running tv shows when they're clearly out of ideas for them? This is a bad look on Apple TV and the cast. Also a waste of everybody's time. Hope that at least they're making good money off of it...

Even Harrison Ford is crass :/

I enjoy watching several of these actors, but good looks and talent can't overcome the ridiculous use of the F-bomb in this series. Cut out 95% of the profanity and it would still be offensive/boring/unnecessary to many. The premise of the series was compelling to me, so I stuck with it. Some of the humor was clever and spot-on delivered, while some was very childish and inappropriate. I was disappointed to hear Harrison Ford adopt the crass language. It sounded wrong from him. Alas, he isn't The Perfect Man. (But he's still got it!) I loved the character of the daughter in this show, but once Dad sobered up, he should've put the hammer down on her language and disrespect. I wonder if the lovely young actress felt embarrassed to be talking like that through every episode. I kinda hope so. Anyway, I was entertained enough to watch it, and being a fan of happy endings, I was glad I did.

Cannot see anything good about this

I watched the first 2 episodws, but see no reason to continue watching. Nothing is really working for me. The comedy is incredibly flat, the dialog the same...I suppose it's supposed to be quirky? It's just 1 note with a lot of swearing to make up for not having anything interesting to say.

The premise for the drama aspect is good, but handled so flippantly and so little gravitas that you know is going to be a waste.

There are worse shows out there and the actors have charisma at least, but I just fail to see what people are enjoying so much about this. It's about as mediocre production as you can possibly get.

Fun drinking game show

"Shrinking" offers a solid premise and a breezy 30-minute format, making it a light and accessible watch. However, the constant emphasis on race in the dialogue often feels unnecessary and overly forced, disrupting the natural flow of the show. Every time the subject comes up-which is frequently-it feels less like a genuine exploration of characters or themes and more like a deliberate effort to check a box or make a point. This approach not only distracts from the narrative but also prevents deeper engagement with the characters and their personal struggles.

The show's humor is hit or miss-some lines land with charm, while others veer into cringe territory-but the relentless focus on race takes away from what could otherwise be an enjoyable and nuanced story. There are moments where the show's heart shines through, especially in its portrayal of grief and personal growth, but these moments are often overshadowed by dialogue that feels overly performative. By trying too hard to incorporate social commentary, the series risks alienating viewers who came for an authentic story about human connection.

While "Shrinking" has potential, its insistence on bringing race into every other conversation feels like a distraction from its better elements. With some restraint and a stronger focus on character dynamics, it could become the thoughtful, funny show it's aiming to be.

Prolific unnecessary unpleasant swearing

This show is actually pretty funny. It does not need all the swearing that only detracts from the clever writing and acting. I mostly enjoy the show except for the unpleasant amount of swearing. The amount of sex talk (especially underaged) is unfortunate as well. The comic delivery is good. I like the balance of sad situations with comic relief. Some touching moments as well. Back to the swearing, it seems like writers resort to swearing if they have a minimal amount of decent material, which is just selling themselves short and not trusting their own talent and the audience to be ok with a very minimal (or zero!) amount of swearing. Let's hold our shows to higher standards...we deserve it!
