With Niels Arden Oplev directing (and as exec producer) -he made the original "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", you can have confidence that this new spinoff of N(C)IS will turn out well. Success of the series clearly depends on accepting Austin Stowell as our stoic new hero, and he makes a strong impression in this opener.

I liked the overall casting with plenty of faces new to me, and I, for one, am willing to make the necessary jump to start fresh with the two central roles of young Gibbs and Franks -not saddling them with living up to the "beloved" original actors in the parts. Kyle Schmid takes charge immediately as Franks -I've seen him many times dating back to his Cronenberg splash decades ago, but he carries no baggage this time around.

Case of a sniper at large is intriguing, and Oplev balances the suspense with the necessary "getting to meet the cast" elements. I didn't spot '90s star Lori Petty yet but the varied types of players is a nice touch. The gravitas of Mark Harmon making his presence felt at the end of this episode is palpable.
