  • first drive across murrica

LOVE tom hanks and tom bodett. I was never a fan of adam arkin...(but oddly, I LOVE the timing and wit of alan arkin !) the story of horatio jackson, who bet that he could drive across the nation in an automobile, what we now call the car. Against all odds, like deep mud, broken engines, flat tires, miscellaneous parts. Jackson, his friend, and his dog find a route across murrica before there were paved roadways. Interesting to note that the winston car brand is no more. At one point, they had offered to sponsor jackson, but only if they were in control, so he refused. Good thing he had his own finances! Interesting story. It had taken lewis and clark over two years to cross murrica! Voices supplied by george plimpton and eli wallach. Directed by the amazing ken burns. Story by dayton duncan, who had worked with burns many, many times!

  • sir ian can do anything!

The amazing ian mckellen is erskine, a theater critic. He understands the weight, the responsibility, the power of his profession. But he has gotten old. And bitter. And when he thinks he's about to be retired, ungracefully, he decides to do something about it. He tries to get revenge on those with the power to hire and fire. And involves those around him. Lots of references to oscar wilde, who erskine claims to have met in person. But he tells us that wilde passed him by, because he wasn't young and cute enough. Which tells us more about him. It's always fun to see mckellen in his various roles! This isn't his strongest or most poignant part, but the machinations make it interesting... a little bit of "dangerous liaisons" taking place behind the scenes. With unwilling participants. Lots of tiny references to the prior roles of the various actors. It's quite good. Apparently the original (book ?) ending was too dark, and various scenes were reshot to create a different ending. Directed by anand tucker. Won a bafta for bookmark.

  • slow & steady. its ok.

2013. Living with someone solely for convenience is never an ideal situation, but sometimes it's a solution of necessity. Two such men meet up. Gabe lives with his ex wife and daughter. Ernesto still lives with his ex boyfriend. They each try to find ways to cope with their loneliness and difficulties. Can they make that special connection, or was it just a passing thing? An being gay is extra tricky in this part of the country. It starts kind of slow. Lots of long pauses. It's pretty good. Nothing too new here, but it's very well told and filmed. Directed by yen tan. Seems to be someone's actual story.

  • another goofy elvis flick

Greg meets bernice on the beach. She's complicated and quirky, and can't seem to tell the truth about anything. Greg only tells the truth, and he needs a job. So he gets two jobs in the same building. But can he hold onto both jobs? And juggle his personal life? He's elvis. Of course he can. For a while! Co-stars michele carey and former heart-throb singer rudy vallee. Also dick sargent, just a year before he co-starred on bewitched! He even talks about working in an advertising agency, what is exactly what he did on bewitched! Perfect ! Directed by norman taurog, who had directed a TON of elvis' films. Based on kiss my firm but pliant lips, by dan greenburg. It's pretty good, as elvis films go. In most of his films, he has multiple women fighting over him; in this one, bernice needs to choose which man she really wants! And elvis need to decide which job he wants.

  • fun cast! better than expected.

Ginger rogers, jimmy stewart. An early-ish role for both of them. They had both been in several films by this time already. Rogers had made several huge films dancing with fred astaire, but she's much less of a shrew in this one! Francey is performing in a night club, and she meets peter when he trips and falls in the middle of her act! They get married right away. But due to mother morgan's "illness", they dare not tell peter's parents they are really married. Similar to every episode of lucy, or three's company, one little lie snowballs, and becomes an avalanche. If they would just tell the truth, all would be fine, and the film would be twenty minutes long! Keep an eye out for charles coburn. He was always the loud, elderly, stuffy old gentleman. Probably best known for gentlemen prefer blondes! You'll also see jack carson, grady sutton, and frank pangborn! They were all great character actors in films of the 1930s, 1940s! What a collection of faces. This was nominated for two oscars, best cinematography, and best sound. Directed by george stevens, better known for shane, giant, place in the sun. It's better than i expected. The story isn't any big deal, but has some clever quips from the various players.

  • trippy story! almost sci-fi.

The david bowie one, from 1976. It's a trip! Thomas newton is an alien, who has come to earth to try to save his own planet. He poses as a british citizen and starts a company, which will enable him to somehow save his own planet. But as we know, hardly anything ever goes as planned, or some such saying. It's all very nebulous.. so many unexplained things. Unanswered questions. But that's part of the excitement. Just going with the flow as things unfold. And unravel. Lots of nudity and sexual situations. It's a fun journey, if you don't ask too many questions! There are several different versions, with varying scenes and runtimes. Directed by nic roeg. Story by walter tevis... had also written the "hustler" (newman, gleason). Died young at 56 from cancer. It's a crazy adventure. Just go along for the ride and don't ask too many questions! This one probably won't be for everyone.

  • my brain was handcuffed!

Vince grayson wakes up from a nightmare, where he dreams he has killed someone. But when he wakes up, he sees things that make him believe he might have really murdered someone. Now he must backtrack and figure out what really happened. He and his brother in law cliff (paul kelly) drive around, and end up finding clues to what happened. Vince is played by deforest kelley... twenty years before he was "bones" on star trek!

It's okay, once we actually get talking about what really happened. Gotta admit, i couldn't guess the ending of this one. Directed by max shane. Based on the the story by william irish, aka cornell woolrich. He wrote the story which hitchcock used for "rear window"! Co-star paul kelly died young at 57. The 1920's were a wild ride for him; read the whole adventure at wikipedia dot org. It almost mirrors this film plot!

  • warren williams in a dram-edy

Odds owen used to be a bookie. But realizes that insurance is just a legal form of odds and gambling! So when a father doesn't want to see his successful daughter shut off the money spigot, he goes to owen and takes out a bet, i mean policy, against his own daughter getting married. It's all fun, funny, and tongue in cheek. Will odds have to pay off? He tries his best to keep marilyn from getting married. Keep an eye out for a 26 year old errol flynn in just his sixth role. Guy kibbee and william gargan showed up in so many supporting roles. It's pretty funny. This one is the perfect combination of drama and comedy. Directed by bob florey, who started in silents. Warren williams was the "lone wolf" and "perry mason" for years. And sadly, died young at 53.

  • Early, early hitchcock.

EARLY hitchcock ! East of shanghai. In some countries, it's called rich and strange. In others, it's blue danube nights. A couple (played by henry kendall and joan barry) inherits a huge sum of money. And they think all their problems will be solved, by traveling around the world with this new wealth. Some beautiful scenery of paris, in the 1930s! Not crowded at all. But as expected, mo' money brings mo' problems. Troubles, when they both find others to toy with. And then even bigger troubles. Although, honestly, when it all hits the fan, fred and emily take a long time to react. You'd think they would react a lot faster, given the circumstances. It's interesting, certainly as an early entry to hitchcock's collection. One of the titles this film has, rich and strange, is a shakespeare reference, as pointed out in wikipedia dot org. Much of the music and exaggerated actor movement shows emotion, in lieu of dialog. We can tell it was just the early days of talkies. A must see, for hitchcock fans.

  • life on the other side of the world

From iran. In english, it's "time for drunken horses"; in kurdish it's zamani baray-e masti-e asbh. Living at the border between iran and iraq, the only trade is the black market; illegal smuggling of goods between the two countries, which is dangerous work. The borders are watched by both countries. Young children being used as mules. Sometimes they get caught. And searched. And left to run back to people who may or may not help them. SO much crying and shrieking. In such a cold, windy, barren place. Clearly, it's not an easy life. And to top it off, one of the children needs an operation soon, or he won't survive. But who has money for medical procedures? It appears they are feeding booze to the mules to get them to go over extreme conditions. That explains the title! Lucky four legged mules! But the human children mules are getting cheated. The adults pull scams on the newer kids and try not to pay them. Will the human mules get paid? Will the brother ever get the medical care he needs so badly ? Interesting timing. The united states was so involved in the politics at the time, and just a year before 9/11/2001. Written and directed by bahman ghobadi. This sure sounded lik someone's actual story. Probably the story of many actual families.

  • Led Zeppppp!! gotta love it.

Really fun! Great old footage, black and white and color. And interviews with the boys. Even john bonham, who is no longer with us. The sound goes way up for the music, and way low for the interviews, so have the remote ready to correct it. Jp jones was dragged along by his vaudeville parents, as they played the ciruits around england. He was even the church organist and choirmaster for several years. Robert plant tells us he was greatly influenced by little richard and his antics. John bonham, died so young at 32 in 1980 from ingesting large amounts of alcohol and choking. There are several recordings of him speaking about his band and mates. He was inspired as a lad by gene krupa.. page and jones had actually accompanied shirley bassey on "Goldfinger", the james bond theme song! Really amazing footage. Jeff beck. The yardbirds. All HUGE names at the time. When you have a chance, read throught the list of current and past members of the yardbirds..... pure gold ! Amazing footage of their first public performance as a group. 1968, in scandinavia. Seems to be the story of their first few years. It ends quite early after they got known as led zeppelin. Directed by bernard macmahon. Two hours of led zep! Can't beat that! Hopefully they will come out with the later chapters. As of today, three of the four band members are still around!

  • great cast !

The real bonus here is the stellar cast! Not a bad one in the bunch!! Judith ivey always seems like your best friend. Peters was hilarious in The Jerk. JEJ was amazing in strangelove, star wars, lion king, and so many others. This film is listed as a comedy, but it sure starts out pretty dark! When a small boy is separated from his mother on a bus trip, he grows up in the town at the end of the route. But he decides to pretend to be deaf and mute, as it has helped him recently. Will he ever feel comfortable enough to talk freely? He has learned many secrets, large and small, by acting deaf and mute all these years. This was ten years after modine made full metal jacket. Good stuff! But it aint no comedy! Directed by john harrison. Has won a TON of film fest awards.

The follow-up to 1949's my friend irma. Mostly the same cast. But in this one, martin and lewis do a bit with the orchestra. And when they head to hollywood to find success, they cross paths with a real shady gang of crooks. It's okay. Kind of goes all over the place. It's a journey, with lots of silliness, singing, and a mostly plausible story. Imdb tells us part of it was really filmed in las vegas. This one directed by hal walker.. had made a couple road films with bob hope and bing crosby. And was nominated for souls at sea! Irma had started as a character on the radio, and made the jump to film at just the right time.

  • lewis & martin steal the show

Dean martin, jerry lewis. But they don't get top billing, this was their first splash in the movies! John lund, diana lynn, and don defore get the lead positions in this hal wallis production. Lots going on in this silly one. Irma's boyfriend thinks he can make singers out of steve and seymour. But of course, they are all sharing one little apartment, so they get on each other's nerves. And irma goes overboard trying to keep her new job. It's fun, but pretty silly. It started as a radio show, and was adapted to a full length film. And even has a sequel "my friend irma goes west". If you're not in the right mood, i can see where it would get on your nerves! Seems to be where jerry lewis started using that high pitched, annoying baby voice he used for so long (too long!) Some innerastin production notes in the imdb trivia section. And keep an eye out for professor kropotkin, in front of the restaurant; hans conried was doctor terwiliker in 5000 fingers, and did the voices for the hobbit, snidely whiplash, and captain hook. It's pretty good, as long as you are in the mood for it! Directed by george marshall.

Robert duvall, jeremy irvine. When the grumpy, old man loses his house, he and his very innocent grandson head to mexico for an adventure. And they find it, for sure! Along the way, they meet up with patty wafers, moon, and panama (gotta love those names!) they also cross paths with drug dealers. Somehow, they have accidentally driven off with the drug money, so now they have drug kingpins after them! And they don't even know they are being chased! But of course, there will be a showdown. It's pretty good. Simple story line, but not bad. Directed by emilio aragón. Has won a bunch of film fest awards. Duvall was nominated for a bunch of oscars...and won one for tender mercies.

Witches. A hanging gone wrong. The crusades. Throw in the plague! Nick cage and ron perlmen are tasked with taking the remaining witch to a place where she can be dealt with. They are considered deserters, so they must take on the job, or suffer the consequences. Lots of swordfights! Wolves! Chases on horseback. Long dramatic pauses where there didn't need to be dramatic pauses. Even a cgi demon. I watched it in the middle of the day, so it probably would have been a bit more scary in the dark. It's okay. Not great. Not much of a final showdown. Directed by dominic sena. He was quite well known for swordfish and many many music videos. Has won a grammy and several film fest awards. • one of the lesser elvis films

In this one... elvis is...ummm.. a charter boat fisherman! Why not. And once again, he's caught between two beautiful women! When his boss retires, ross has to figure out a way to buy back the boat that his father built way back when. Some pretty racist stuff in this, but ... it was the times, i guess. Ross shows respect to the culture and the families. It's about the same as his other thirty films; the going theory is that his best film was was "love me tender", and the other thirty were lesser knockoffs. This one is okay. No real chemistry between the actors. It's just not as fun as blue hawaii, viva las vegas, or spinout. The trivia section on imdb tells us some of the scenes were filmed at hawaii! Elvis had just finished making blue hawaii, also on ___location. The trivia also tells us that stella stevens hated the script. Directed by norman taurog. He and elvis made a whole slew of films together!

  • silly and fun! roadtrip!

The 2023 one. Full length film. Written and directed by sarah holland. Egghead and twinkie are the best of friends. Apparently, egghead has a crush on twinkie, but she's a lesbo, so it probably won't work out in the end. But can they at least stay friends? Stars louis tomeo, sabrina jaiafa. And now, twinkie is telling lies to egghead, so it's a slippery slope! Lots of cartoony animation mixed in... reactions to text messages, captions. Talk of ethics, principles. It's all in good fun. And because they are millenials, they are on their phones the entire time! Will twinkie ever get to meet her new online friend? This won a TON of film fest awards. So cute. If there's a sequel (and I hope there is!!) maybe we could explore egghead's story.

Yup, that's the voice of him backus (Thurston howell from Gilligan's island!) narrating at the beginning. Tells the story of a bail bondsman who helps get someone out of jail. But when the dude disappears, now he's on the hook for both their troubles! And now his friend ferrone, the cop who put bracket away, isn't happy. Stars huge names george raft and pat o'brien. Some great scenery of los angeles in the 1940s. And really good suspense near the end ! The trivia section tells us fred macmurray was connected with the film at one point... too bad he didn't end up in it! Directed by ted tetzlaff. He was nominated for talk of the town! This is a good one! And he was cinematographer/ director of photography on SO many great films. Check em out! One of my favorite films is notorious, with cary grant, ingrid bergman.

  • inconsistent film from huston.

The audrey hepburn one! It's been remade numerous times. Lancaster and audrey hepburn, who could both play anything with ease. Lillian gish, HUGE star from the silents and the talkies. Clash between the white settlers and the american indians. And between the white family and their own neighbors. About 1 hour in, there's a sky high overhead shot of the ranch layout. It's interesting, but it really takes you out of the scene. And why is there circus/carnival/ old time movie music playing the entire first half? It seems more whimsical than a serious drama, almost llike much ado about nothing. Then, it gets much more serious. But they play piano during a gunfight with the indians. It's interesting, but not my favorite film. And according to the trivia on imdb, not john huston's either. Many of his films are about flawed characters in bizarre, interesting situations. And this is no different. Huston was better known for sierra madre or chinatown. Watch those instead.

A dag and damon wayans project. Jason alexander (george !) is in here as the wacky boss. Some really good gags in here. At the tabloid paper, the editor throws darts at a board to compose the next edition's crazy headline. Darryl is an inventor, but his creations never seem to work! Except for the fork holding the left side of darryl's glasses on his head. That works just fine. When their chicago neighborhood goes bad, darryl and kevin team up as crimefighters. With mixed results. Keep an eye out for jon polito... he frequently plays the crumbum, the bad guy. Here, he's minelli, the heavy. A few other names in here with cameos. It's not bad! Mostly funny, overall. Directed by mike binder. He directed the tribute to the awesome bob saget, so he must know comedy!

The 1937 one. What's a western without gene autry, snging his heart out ? Young chap from england ( is THAT what his accent is supposed to be ??) visits the ranch he inherited. He plans on selling it, but ranch manager gene wants to convince him to keep it and work it like a real cowboy. Interesting career path for ra hould, who later changed his name to ronald sinclair... he's only thirteen in this. Born in new zealand, he acted in seventeen films, then worked behind the scenes as crew for many more films! It's a solid if slightly goofy storyline, but it all comes off well enough. Directed by joe kane, king of the westerns. Made tons of them with john wayne, gene autry, roy rogers. It's a 58 minute shortie, from republic. It's your usual horses galloping around, while some conflict is ironed out. Some scenes filmed in the glorious alabama hills area of lone pine. The sound and picture quality are in excellent shape, especially for a film about ninety years old!

A george clooney project. Some pretty heavy hitters in this one! Politics. Secrets, mistakes, rumors. Two governors, vying to be president of the united states. About ten years after the nine eleven massacre in new york. Stephen meyers (gosling) is the ambitious press secretary, working for mike morris, climbing his way up the ladder. Then, he gets an offer to switch teams. Things happen fast. Good things, bad things. Will he make good decisions? It's mostly good, in spite of some minor errors. But it's politics, and everyone is looking out for themselves, so the viewer doesn't really get too invested in any one person. Based on a play by beau willimon. The film was nominated for one oscar and two baftas! Hoffman died three years after making this, at age 46.

Directed.. and starring... alec baldwin! Co stars dan akroyd. This film languished in editing for SIX years! And baldwin had requested that his name be taken off of it, due to all the changes since he had worked on it. What does it take for a writer to get published? We start with the writer stone (baldwin) sneaking into the publisher's office in the sky (hopkins). But when they refuse to publish his work, stone despairs, and throws his typewriter out the window. When the devil (hewitt) shows up with an offer he can't refuse, will stone take it? It's the success he's always wanted! You'll see some familiar faces. Bobby cannavale (will & grace), kim cattrall (sex and the city), amy poehler (parks and recreation). Even carrot top! How far will stone go to find the fame and fortune he's always wanted? Some comedy, about halfway through. It's entertaining, but it ain't no shakespeare. And it's not so different from "meet joe black", which hopkins made in 1998!

  • intrigue from spain

The gardener. In europe, it's el jardinero. From spain. Only six episodes. A mother ( cecilia suárez ) and son ( álvaro rico ) team of assassins. But while elmer has an odd, strong connection with nature, he has lost his sense of emotions with people. A perfect trait for a killer! When they bury the bodies in their own yard, the plants and trees seem to thrive even more. Elmer and mom are saving up to buy a house far away, where they can leave all this behind. Officers torres and carrera are surprised that they never find the bodies of the missing people. A new job brings a new twist... the next target has already fallen for elmer. Can he carry out the job? If he goes through with it, will the coppers trace the murder back to elmer and his mother? Things begin to unravel. Things are not going according to plan anymore. The casting is good, the english dubbing is excellent. It probably didn't need to be six episodes.... the coppers took a LONG time to start linking the murders. But overall, it's good! Another good miniseries from netflix. And the writers have left it wide open for a season two! But no announcements yet, if there will be more episodes. Directed by rafa montesinos and mikel rueda.
