This was beautiful storytelling of a rotten situation... Broken people..so epically well cast. Nuance, use of silence and awkward situations. I was tense. I cried on my way home from the cinema. I'll probably watch again. There's not much recommending prison for young offenders. You see the effects of trauma and brutality.. the righteous, "you've made bad choices"... There was no choices for these discarded people. ... Brilliant movie.
Guy Pearce acting was good as a confident but not cocky repeat offender. You never know if he's genuine or a good manipulator. The actor playing the young man protagonist is awesome with his 'innocent' fear all over his face.

I'm up to episode 6 of binge..the pace is delightful. Small snippets unfold. The idea of evil permeates..so called do- gooders have fake motives. Good character study and understanding in of human nature and that everyone has capacity to do wrong.i can't wait to see how this ends. Very sorry to read it was not renewed for season 2 as it has all the hallmarks of a quality long tv series. There is a gothic menace the entire was through. The main actor for Karen/Emma is great..a tortured misunderstood and manipulated victim of a serial killer who did things for love but has kindness and justice in her soul.
As a westerner I was so drawn into the family drama and quest for love versus duty. The ruthlessness of power and status overpowers right and wrong. What 'seems' respectable is shallow social standing. It depicts the frailty of human emotions and how easy it can be to manipulate others to your needs. Purva is wickedly evil spoilt child accustomed to always getting her way. She has learned from her father that one's desires are always ok even at the expense of another's life.
