There is always a sense of peril throughout the show.
Examples are sequences where Emily brings her girlfriend home for dinner, much to her mother's disapproval as well as her trying to cope with being together with a closeted lesbian where she is unhappy that their relationship has to be kept a secret, etc.

One of the main characters also suffers from a mental breakdown of sorts later in the series after realizing that her boyfriend has been making use of her.

In season 5 and 6 the doll house episodes are probably the scariest episodes in the show.
