I have watched this film many times and I recently viewed it again. The only really interesting part of the movie is the relationship between the young boy and the soldier. Everything else that happens in the film is really just to establish why this young man would be drawn to someone kind and caring. What I wish would have been delved into more was how the soldier came to feel the way he does about the kid. He talks a little about his past with his father and mother but never really explains himself personally. He does not look like he would have ever had a problem getting a girl, so his "prediliction" becomes even more a mystery.
I really applaud the fact that the film maker was able to tell this story so sensitively without it being lurid. It is a shame I think that a film like this could never have been made in America, "the land of the free".

I have watched Poirot: Lord Edgeware Dies twice now and I have found it terribly, terribly enjoyable. David Suchet really brings the character of Hercule Poirot to life for me. (Fun also to watch the by-play between the single Belgian detective and his now married English friend, Captain Hastings) A very interesting character study and a good lesson on just how much trust one should give to a client. The movie keeps one guessing till the end.
I really, really love this show. I don't think I have enjoyed a show this much since "Quantum Leap". This is one of those rare drop whatever you're doing, lock yourself up in your room, "shut-up-and-don't-bother-me" type of shows. It has everything you watch television for: action, drama, humor, personality, good stories, plus the one thing missing from most television-ORIGINALITY! I cannot think of another show that was ever like this one. It also has characters that you can really care about (which, if you examine it, you'll find is the deciding factor in most of the shows that are historically considered really great television). Richard Burgi, Garett Maggart and Bruce A. Young are the stars of this show and I feel that this is the best television work so far in their careers.
