The film is full of ironic statements and double meanings which can be taken to apply to Hitler's fascist regime: Especially a scene in which an informer (Denunziant) is branded as an especially low creature. All this makes the film very enjoyable today.
With the backdrop of late 1930's Europe and the threat of totalitarianism this film presents a parabel about freedom, where it begins, where it ends, and where the power of the state begins. I saw this about ten years ago and am now reading the book, By C.F. Ramuz, French-Swiss author, which I believe came out in 1933 and is based on an actual set of circumstances or legend out of 19th century Switzerland.
This film is charmingly macabre, about a taxidermist with a sincere love and lust for life, and his terrible antithesis of a wife. The performances are absolutely convincing, and the pompous catholic padre is unforgettable during the confession at the end, as is the lead character. The attention to detail makes it a pleasure to watch this film again and again.
