From shame to love. Bravo Mariska Hargitay and your siblings for giving us the gift of your hearts and souls as you share not only Jayne's story but the depth of how her choices and life impacted you. It's rare to be exposed to this kind of raw honesty. To see the footage and photos of all of you was deeply moving. Tanks also to your stepmom, your biological father and his daughters (your half sisters). That scene when your biological dad says he wished something (I won't spoil it for others) and his daughters response - that will be with me forever. Not for 'what' was said, but for the pure joy and laughter you all shared together. Thank you for this remarkable gift.
Jose's line "It might get messy" made this for me. Relationships are messy. And this is a non-stop series of messy relationships. I had a love/hate with so many characters. Everyone has a dark side and as the story moves forward and histories are revealed, we are treated to their struggles for survival. And the continuation of mistakes!? Strong performances by all. Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Meghan Fahy, Milly Alcock, Bill Camp and special mention to Felix Solis. I enjoyed the ride and the infusion of humour amidst the dark. I love stories that challenge my judgment of others and this did it.
First, damn fine honest performances by everyone. I love the way the story, the truths were unfolded with each episode. It challenges assumptions, perceptions and (hopefully) values. Nothing is black and white. Emotions are raw and, as with exceptional storytelling combined with talent, they ring true. What depths would we go to for family. What sacrifices (or what we perceive as sacrifices) will we make. How do we justify our thoughts, feelings, choices. When you find yourself judging the choices of almost all characters, hold on to those judgements until you become aware of what inspires them. I loved this series. Highly recommend.
