The Marx brothers started on vaudeville and this is their second feature film.
The bros. Are iconic and I had seen this long ago, but I have to say I wasn't impressed.
There is a lot of wooden acting here that seems as though they're reading off of cue cards off-screen.
The irreverent Brothers are the obvious focus and Harpo-the silent one- has always been my favorite, though in this he literally chases a woman about and is introduced firing a gun at people, all played for laughs😬 There are also sequences where we just sit and watch Chico play the piano and Harpo the harp. They are obviously talented (I like the way Chico dances his fingers on the keys) but it kinda halts the movie to a stop.
Groucho, the lead, does some cute 4th-wall breaking and the movie can be commended with how it plays with the form.

This is an incredible experiment in film that is hugely ahead of its time!
Filmed in urban Russia, it shows daily life; working, playing sports, lounging at the beach, dancing, people getting married, getting divorced, funerals, child-births- all with innovative camera techniques and editing.
There's no 'plot' or concrete scenes per se, but you still get a sense for the people and where the film is taking you.
I was pleasantly surprised at how similar Russian cities were to our cities. American propaganda had painted the picture of early 20th century Russia as being just a snowy wasteland devoid of excitement and color. But this was a wonderful reminder of how so many places around the world aren't really that different.
