Most of the negative reviews are reflective of what those viewers want the film to be. Unfortunately for them that isn't how art works. I see complaints of "disgustingly making him sympathetic" or it was boring.
How exactly can the filmmaker make him a villain before he's a villain? The whole point of the film is what leads up to the very well documented atrocities he commuted. I don't think we are in any danger of forgiving him through the lens of history. People just want to be offended. As for it being boring, I would suggest folks taking ten seconds to see what a film is about before they watch it and rip it for being something else. Again, the viewers problem not the film's.
The acting is superb and it appears everything is pretty spot on to what we know about his teenage years leading up to his plunge into depravity.
Sorry it didn't make things up to entertain people or avoid other's indignation.
If you're a rational adult with a grasp on the concept it's a rather well-executed indie adaptation of an interesting graphic novel. Worth a watch, unless you want to see the exploitation of 17 innocent guys being murdered of course. That's not here.

Whether you read the book or just have the interest, watch this. It's not a perfect show but It was a very entertaining series, and certainly above par for King adaptations. Which is the key word- ADAPTation. Don't let many of the elitist twit reviews on here deter you. The series moved away from the series where it needed to in order to be an entertaining picture. It's truly astounding to see so many people not understand that their love for the book doesn't translate to good filmmaking. The book was massive with many unneeded detours. Albeit, As a reader I enjoyed those detours for an enriched read but it would've been an androgynous view with it all in there. Items like a narrative internal voice being placed into having a sidekick to bounce it off of. The lessened detours from the novel. The romance. The changes. They were all necessary and if King himself, thinks they were brilliant then who the hell cares what bitter reviewer 14 from Iowa thinks? Honestly, it was an entertaining piece of TV that was translated from an excellent read. If you are interested- WATCH IT!
Pretty blasé effort here. On paper this movie looked like a great time and should have been. Carell & Carrey facing off as competing magicians? I think most of us thought that could be a good time. Wasn't.
The performances were acceptable and the production value was there. The script unfortunately was not. There was no real structure or pace to the film. A comedy can get by with that, when there's plenty of laughs; but this one somehow did not have them. The real magic trick going on here is to get Carell and Carrey on board, throw in Buscemi for good measure, and make them all disappear on screen. Seriously, next to no genuinely funny moments. If this film/script had picked an a direction to focus on it might have worked. Instead, it hung around in the middle of mediocre humor and mediocre storytelling.
If you want to kill a few hours, throw it on, there is certainly worse and the stars are likable as usual. If you want something truly funny, charismatic, or moving. Look elsewhere.
