- The four brothers of the Phelan family battle to save their farm and their family from the ravages of the Irish Potato Famine in 1846, and from an English land agent who takes a dislike to them.
- Ian has recently eloped with country girl Lisa. The have moved from London back to her hometown Snowle, and comedy ensues.
- Ian attempts to secure the contract for Snowle Primary's school photograph, while Astley divides a way to remove his son in law once and for all.

- Norriswood decides to offer Ian a position has a school governor but his joy is short lived when he crosses his father in law at his board meeting. Dean gives him the chance to let his hair down but it involves a lot of heavy drinking.
- Ian decides to advertise a photographic teaching course which offers a nude modelling module. Susanna Grave gets a crush on Ian and he needs Lisa's help let her down gently. Ian becomes under pressure from the class to find a nude model.
- Lisa wants Ian to bond with her father by taking up his offer to go clay pigeon shooting. Ian is wary having already escape death once. Lisa lets slip that Helen is looking for romance and now has to fend off offers from Dean's friends.
- Dean is doing building work at Derek Few's home but refuses to finish. Derek is cracking up so Lisa begs Dean to finish it. Helen is going on holiday so Ian is persuaded to help Jill in the shop. Jill's new candles sets fire to the shop.

- After an afternoon in the pub, Ian goes to Astley's farm to take some photos. A ladder is left by the barn so he climbs on the roof but falls off. Ian starts to to believe his father-in-law wanted him to fall but Lisa doesn't believe it.
