Does it occur to any of you that the premise that this guy kills only murderers who otherwise can't be brought to justice was a way for the producers to sidestep criticism of what is basically a show that glorifies serial murder? They know you tune in for the blood lust, not the comedy or the justice. If it was about good old fashioned vigilantism they wouldn't include the scenes of Dexter enjoying his killings.
It says a lot about modern America that this show exists. The parallels to ancient Rome just keep coming.
Try to imagine this show with a non-sociopathic "hero" and you'll see that you'd not enjoy it nearly as much. And that says a lot about YOU.

Don't bother investing your time to watch this...after season 4 the show looses its creativity and by the very end your left with nothing... it was like the writers couldn't be bothered thinking of an ending and pulled suggestions out of their a**. I'm not quite sure why the show ended the way it did...not only was the story line pathetic...the acting was mediocre and the it was just basically THE WORST ending ever...there are no other words to describe it. I could go on forever about how horrible it was...there were so many better scenarios they could have used! I originally gave this show a 10/10 but now I feel it deserves a 1/10 Seriously DON'T BOTHER! Good Bye Dexter...
I only made it through the first three episodes of the first season, so unless the show has gotten a whole lot better since then, which I doubt, I stand by my 1-star rating.
This show is kind of like what would happen if they decided to make American Psycho into a TV series, and hired the writers and of a cheesy sitcom, a director whose last project was a high school play, and actors who previously only worked in porn.
Okay, yes, Michael C. Hall is great in the show, but you know what he'd be even better in? A show with good writing and a decent supporting cast. I think the worst thing about the show has to be the voice-overs. They're just insulting. It's like they're saying, "Don't worry audience. We know it hurts to think, so we've done all the thinking for you. You see, Dexter is very much aware that he's a very hollow, emotionless killer, but just in case you forget, we'll have him remind you about every 3 minutes or so." The thing that sucks is, I really wanted to like this show. Great premise, great lead actor, but in the end, just a really crappy show.

It says a LOT about modern audiences that a show in which someone commits a slow BDSM murder on a crying human being in the opening five minutes of the first episode is one of the biggest hits in TV history.
I don't care what kind of excuses the show gives itself - this is about a man who methodically hunts people down and the climax is him slaughtering that individual in a creative, brutal manner.
Wake up call to people who enjoy this series: you are a closet sadist and/or masochist. You need to open up to yourself about these hidden feelings.
Addition: This is not what a psychopath (APD) is like. I have spent time with psychopaths before, even shared a house with one for three years, and they are absolutely NOT like this. Dexter is the Hollywood interpretation of antisocial personality disorder, not the real deal.

This is one of those series which has a compelling premise, a great balance between the drama and the humor until the end of the fourth season. After that the show runner changed and it's goes from an epic series to a disgrace. The first four seasons are great, but the final 4 are nowhere near as good.
Now that is not a crime worthy of such a low rating, but the final episode, the ending is so bad it ruins everything that came before it, if there is any justice served, any person who had any hand creative input in the ending would never work in any form of any entertainment industry again. Yes it is that bad. Not ambiguous like lost or sopranos, but the worst ending in the world, and sadly it's definitive. Do not watch!

Starting with the 5th season, the series turned into garbage. The storyline completely contradicts everything we learned about in the previous 4 seasons. Dexter's behavior completely contradicts the personality he portrayed earlier. It's obvious that a fresh team of screenwriters who failed took on work in the new season and completely ruined the entire series. I advise you to watch 4 seasons and then stop at what you saw so that you don't stay with the feeling that you wasted a huge amount of time. That sleeping situation when people can't stop in time. And turn the masterpiece into runes. Very sad.

Boring TV series with a criminal Dexter and uninteresting characters. If I truly want to see a Vigilante TV series then Arrow is much better though more unrealistic and more superhero SCIFI based. However in Arrow the enemy are extremely dangerous and the actors in the Arrow TV series are more to my liking.
Sick morale in this TV series enough said.
You could argue that law should work more in favor of cops sometimes yes I understand that but I don't think this is the solution.
Dexter is about revenge and personal feelings and not justice. OK in season 2 for personal feelings goal is to kill someone in the witness protection program. I am sorry but a person in witness protection program has earned the right to live by doing a contract with law enforcment.

Some shows are bloody and mysterious in a good and attractive way but this is just awful
It begins way better than it ends, The ending is just selly and in general it's lack of smartness and mystery

A series about a serial killer where the real crime is being committed by the writers. I loved season 1, it was unique, quirky, great acting and well scripted... a solid 9 stars from me.
It's been an excruciating demise however to make this great premise unwatchable, by my basic math if I started at 9 stars and take 1 star off for every season of decline, the most recent season is a solid 1 star, where to from here? Please stop.

Unfortunately, I can't understand the hype surrounding this series in any way. I really tried it and made it to the end of season 3, but then gave up because it just wasn't meant to be. :-P
The first thing that got on my nerves very quickly was Dexter's eternal head voice. He babbles incessantly and unfortunately he always spoils himself, so that any kind of tension is lost. Everything happens with an announcement and you can just watch him do it. That wouldn't be so bad in itself if it wasn't so boring. I'm still wondering why it should be rated 18? There are countless films/series in which it is much harder and that with FSK 16. Here you basically see tons of cling film and the pattern is always the same. Wrapped up, then a small slit in the cheek for the memory test and then it's just hinted that a chainsaw is used. That's okay for the first ten times, but then it's just boring.
Many people complain about Dexter's annoying sister, but what I found worse was his girlfriend, who was always whining. She really got on my nerves. No matter whether there was joy or sorrow, she was always equally tearful.
The humor (if there is any in the series) didn't hit me. The look is of course getting on in years and I wonder if I would have liked it better back then. Nevertheless, there are also series from that time that have "aged" less.
For me, it's a typical early evening series where everything is talked to death, everything is very drawn out and there's no suspense or surprises.
Too bad, but I gave it a try. - It wasn't meant to be. But the series has its community and that's fine. :-)

Okay, so I am new here (just finished season one) and I am still hoping the show will prove me wrong in next season or so (won't watch much more than that if it doesn't).
If it changes my mind, I will come back and edit this review.
I am seriously taken aback for how bad the portrayal of a psychopath is done here.
Did the writers write this for fun and that excuses the formidable wrong portayal they do in this show?
And it is not really fun either.
Trully, I don't understand how this show can have so many stars (rates).
There are so many ways Dexter doesn't fit a psychopathic profile I don't even know where to start. Therefore I will not get into it. There is enough information online for anyone to understand why I have this oppinion.
BUT also, to make things even worse the show is not intelectually stimulating, not fun enough, not enough action either.

After all these good reviews and popping up again and again, I finally started watching this promising show.
Not a fan of the main actor at all, my first minus.
Hearing his thoughts, him talking most of the episodes, feels like a audio book and was getting on my nerves from the start. So I skipped half of the first episode and started the second, hoping the talking was just in the first to explain some things from his past and present, but unfortunately it continued. Why?
Some of his talking was also very ridiculous, like his explanation of perfect driving food - banana and pulled pork sandwich. Nothing smart about that.
At last, I can't find anything interesting in a crime solver/ serial killer. What does that tell you about the people around him?
In short: absolutely not my thing!

Worst dialogue I've seen in a good while and honestly while I was watching I had to stop myself from laughing and skipping through the whole show. My friends and family love it but I honestly can't understand the hype. I was bored after the first minute I watched it and usually when I watch something it recaptures my attention, but not this. It sounded like a great concept but it literally looked like the worst execution. Camera work was great though, but camera work can't make up for lousy dialogue. I just have to keep bringing it up because it was literally so bad. Wish I could get back the time I wasted.
