Having said that, the first 20 mins or so, may tempt you to abandon it, which would be a mistake. It really gets its legs in act II. Its a film about ideas regarding AI, and of course "Human nature". You do not have to be an expert in AI, but an active interest/view is probably obligatory to get anything out of it, and you will get a lot.
Maybe one flaw is that it is not so emotionally engaging, like say the 2001 big budget, A. I. Artificial Intelligence. But maybe thats the point?
Ironically, the AI "character" itself pulls off the best performance imo, though the rest of small cast are convincing, helped by some excellent dialogue writing.
The Artifice Girl watches like a performance of good theatre. It doesn't need expensive sets or locations, just the intimate interactions of the characters and the sensitive expressions of their inner lives to tell it's story.
And yes it's a story about Artificial Intelligence and asks that fundamental question: Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep? While it doesn't exactly answer that question, because that's an almost impossible question to answer, this film does a very good job of getting to the heart of that query.
The plot is intriguing and compelling. The dialogue is terse, informed and intelligent. No words are wasted in the conversations of the characters, or their value in conveying essential points of the story. The acting is excellent and authentic, especially from the young actress playing Cherry ( Tatum Matthews ) who won an award for her acting in this film. The other actors, including the writer and director ( Franklin Ritch ), who co-stars, also do a fantastic job of portraying their deep characters.
So yeah, it's a story abou A. I. But it's also a story about humanity, morality and the purpose of life. Definitely a cool film and one you should certainly watch.
( The only reason I didn't give it 10/10 was cos it could have used a higher budget for sets and props, haha! Hopefully the team will get that higher budget for their next film. )
Having a child actor as the centrepiece (or at least a significant piece) in your film is a risky proposition. It does help on this occasion that the child in question is being asked to act very un-child-like. Either way though I thought Tatum Matthews was excellent in her role. She wasn't just passable, she was captivating every time she was on screen.
This film does so much with so little. An entire 40 minute introduction scene to set up the film, simply with people sitting around a table talking - and it was riveting. I was hanging on every word. The dialogue in this movie is terrific from start to finish.
This is a very thought-provoking film. I'd be shocked if people watched this and didn't come away with some heavy things to think about. I thoroughly enjoyed this one from start to finish and would highly recommend it. 9/10.
First of all, I have to state that I have no connection to this production whatsoever, I am just a movie freak who have an open mind. Having said that, what you'll get if you watch this is a thoroughly thought provoking movie with a superb screenplay, sharp and well on spot, up to date in every sense. If you like your brain working, this one is for you.
It is staggering to see a mini-mini-mini independent film to be so incredibly good. Well, it's all about ideas, talented people pulling in the same direction.
Let's not forget about the actors, who are great, basically all of them, especially Tatum Matthews with a very bright future if she choose to. The camerawork, editing and music are all basic, however they all make this picture work superbly.
It is a very good film. Well worth the watch.

- ट्रिवियाTo help prepare herself for the role, Tatum Matthews worked with Alexa, Amazon's virtual assistant, to develop the robotic-sounding voice.
- गूफ़About three minutes before the film ends, Cherry has been dancing to the music of a vinyl record for a considerable time when the music begins to repeatedly skip. The scene cuts to the record on the turntable, where the stylus is seen skipping on a groove on the very outside edge of the record, which is the very start of it and its music.

Deena: Did either of you know that I've had to stand in front of Congress and explain why children should have rights? It sounds fucking insane, right? I remember the whole time thinking, I have to explain this shit? It seems like a no-brainer now, but it wasn't that many centuries ago that children had no rights. So, Hal has me of all people, stand up there and explain why kids deserve basic physical protection, the right to associate with both parents, freedom from abuse, yada yada. But then I also have to clarify that children don't have the autonomy to make decisions on their own. That responsibility falls upon the caregiver or legal adult guardian. So on one side you have the US legislature, it still hasn't even ratified the CRC. Then on the other side, you have French Marxists who say that the lack of child autonomy increases their vulnerability and makes them even more susceptible to abuse. I don't typically agree with Marxists, but a lot of abuse does happen systemically from the caregiver. On the other other hand, your frontal lobes aren't even fully hooked up until your twenties. Even the things we think we know well, we don't know as well as we think. For 15 years, the three of us have been the responsible parents of a computer program. And even though she is more equitable to a Keurig than a human being, how the hell can we call ourselves pioneers of humanitarian efforts if we're too embarrassed to make sure the Keurig is okay with making our shitty coffee? Maybe asking Cherry for permission isn't necessary at her current level of general intelligence, but one day she's gonna surpass us. One day a robot's gonna stand in front of a jet pack Congress. Everything's chrome. Florida is underwater. A robot's gonna wonder why they have to explain the importance of rights for AI. I think because we're in the unique position of revolutionizing robotics for the purpose of safeguarding children who have been deprived of consent, it might be a good habit to start asking the robot for his consent as well.
