As a six-year-old, I loved U2, they were my favorite band, I had all their cassettes, and later CDs, then I grew up, travelled the world and found a career path. U2 is a somewhat painful topic for me because Bono has essentially ruined the music, bringing a horrible taste to the mouth when I encounter it now. Yes, I can still listen to albums and I know all the words! Perhaps he should have stuck to the music, not all publicity is good publicity after. Bono is an extremely dislikable individual. It is quite baffling why Apple execs seem to have formed a cult around him - i guess that happens a lot with bands to be fair. Anyway, this is a textbook hagiography, and about 30 minutes too long.
I lasted about 3/4ths of the first episode. The subject matter is wholly unpalatable. Hollywood isn't cool. It's disgusting. Filled with rapists, pederasts, drug addicts, and other low lives - the sum total of scandals in the last 20 years or so have taken their toll. It's not smart, it's not clever (if you want smart and clever Hollywood satire see Mank (2020)). There's nothing original here, its basically an updated less slapsticky 30 Rock. Rogan is... quelle Suprise, annoying. Hollywood is full of seriously deranged and unwell people, but this "satire" as it wishes to be known doesn't even scratch the surface, in fact it does the opposite, it's a glossy lie. Things are much worse in real life. The only time anyone told it like it was at the now obsolete "award" shows when Gervais ripped the room to shreds - now that is tv gold!
I didn't think I would be bored by this barely concealed propaganda, but I was. BoB and the Pacific cast long shadows over this. Unconvincing and lacking depth. As one reviewer claims his veteran relative would have enjoyed it, my own understanding of the War via relatives who participated was that War films are mostly pro-war, and therefore essentially stupid - because those who participated didn't do so with soaring music in the background and the girls weren't all from central casting. It's nice to see beautiful people on screen, but the actors cast in this are all a bit Hansen's so hot right now. As Apple execs scramble to make "prestige" television what we get is formulaic and routine. Sure there is some interesting WW2 trivia here and there, but you never get the sense that this is an homage to bravery nor even that it is honest in its narrative. I managed 2 episodes before my attention stores dried up.
