Takao Horiuchi is the youngest of three siblings and used to sing since he was little. When his grandmother listened to him she would say "Takao, your voice is beautiful and you sing very well! One day you will become a famous singer".

In elementary school, Takao used to stay in his sister's room listening to a radio that played western music. Once, listening to a song by The Beatles , he felt as if something amazing had occurred to him. His older brother borrowed several Beatles records from friends and took them home, a fact that greatly influenced his taste in music.

He won in 1990 the 32nd Japan Record Award in the enka categorie( = Japanese music genre considered to resemble traditional Japanese music stylistically) for the song 'Koiuta Tsuzuri'.

His first guitar was given to him by his older sister and Takao taught himself to play, practicing every day.

He has released fifty singles and fifteen albums since 1975, and also composes for other artists.

In college, Takao was in amateur bands, and it was in this circle that he met Shinji Tanimura. In 1971, when he turned 22 and was in the 4th year of college, he was invited by Shinji to become a professional singer.
