Desperation is my favorite Stephen King book. And this movie, if you want to call it that, is quite possibly the worst adaptation of a King work that I've ever seen.
At first I wanted to blame it on the fact that it was a movie made for television. But that's not true; IT was also a TV movie, and it was spectacular.
For having what was not a horrible gathering of acting talent at all, Desperation just seemed REALLY cheesy. Even Ron Perlman, who can ham it up like nobody's business and make it look awesome, made me cringe.
Don't waste your time with this. And PLEASE do not judge the book by this movie. Desperation the book is a thrilling and moving piece of work. Desperation the movie is just a piece of...

I was looking forward to this movie, as I had just finished reading the book of the same name. I had braced myself for some items being left out due to the fact it was on ABC...made for TV...all of that. But I couldn't have imagined how disappointing this film really was.
My first gripe with the film is that Collie is supposed to be about 6'7 according to the book, where as in the film he was not shown as the giant he was supposed to be. I understand it's hard to find an actor that tall, but they could have perhaps used some sort of shoes to make him a bit taller.
Secondly, the movie doesn't explain certain aspects. For example, when the two groups meet up, my father had to ask me why they didn't just get in the truck and get out of town instead of going to the movie theater.
I also wasn't a fan of the obligatory "Redrum" in the scene with the soap. For me, movies are good if you get so caught up in them you feel it's real, but with the "redrum" stuck on the wall it brought up "The Shining" and it kind of ruined the pace.
The one thing I did like was the solid acting by the actor who played Collie. I thought he did a good job in coming across with a dark humorous attitude. I would have absolutely LOVED to see R. Lee Ermy with that role however, as he did an excellent job in Full Metal Jacket and TCM remake. He is, however, much shorter and may have been too energetic for the role.
I really think this could have been a good movie, but instead it was watered down for television. I think if Steven King started trying to get his movies put out in Hollywood with the "R" ratings they deserve, they'd do a lot more credit to his name and be much more entertaining for everyone else.

Horrible. i definitely expected much more and was disappointed in this movie. when i first heard of it finally coming out i was anticipating a good 2 hour 30 minute movie in the theaters with a harsh R rating. when i did see it on TIVO i fell asleep and didn't miss much. the movie didn't hit the detail described in the book. which would help some people get into it and would actually explain more of what had and is happening. great disappointment in relation to the book, which is about my favorite of all time. remake anytime soon??? i only hope they would consider someday. or it will be like 30 years till it happens like most remakes. Be glad i was generous with the 2 star rating...
Perhaps "Desperation" would be a more appropriate title for Stephen King's multimedia career. Despite simplifying Jack Torrance's dilemmas, how King could possibly justify that Kubrick's "Shining" can't hold a candle to his schlocky, beyond over-long & literal Steven Weber tortuous remake? Anyways, namevalue alone guarantees more of his TV adaptations in the upcoming years. Let's hope they improve over this self-righteous, dull, God-athon where projecting mediocre ideas about a deity takes precedence over clever plotting and haunting characters. Eight adults take backstage to a pious, humorless child as his devotion to God allows for the destruction of evil. On the written page, the mythic mid nineteenth century origins of the Earth Demon might weave a spell, but considering the whole kit and kaboodle is revealed in one cheap-looking sepia told flashback, to that frickin kid no less, it holds very little grip on my fears. Speaking of annoying characters, what's with King casting himself as a writer who saves the world?! Tom Skerrit looked more badass making out with Drew Barrymore in the rain than he does in that sad excuse for a black leather jacket? The only moments of true entertainment came from a few easily made suspense scenes, the rotting overheated flesh of the dead, and Ron Pearlman's obscene overacting.
This has to be one of the worst written and acted films I've seen in a long time.
Does Stephen King really need the money at this point?
It's an interesting concept -- and you will know where it's heading from five minutes into the movie -- that is exceedingly poorly realized.
The movie plays more like a comedy than anything else and it's overly long, which I find is true for a lot of King films.

Just showed on ABC. After an interesting and classic King first hour, it was a gradual decline into absolute garbage. How King could have even allowed his name to be associated with this is as strange as the funky sheriff with the demonic attitude.
The producers have placed a religious overtone on the plot that is not as present in the actual novel. It's apparent the religious/political argument being made here, and it spoils the whole theme. It's hard to believe the movie could have been slower than the book. It would have been more entertaining had they continued exploring the "Republican-in-a-demon-suit" thing.
Don't waste 3 hours better spent elsewhere.

This movie wants so hard to be good as the book but we all know hows that worked out
Ive seen this movie for long ago and remember it as pretty bad, but though of giving it a new shot but of course it was not better this time, it was worse - but a cred to pearlman who is perfect in that character
I dont like the book that much either, its just not one of kings most sparkling moments. Think the story is very simple. Almost like written by a teenager , no material and pale ideas , but king do king things when he write and the audience like it cause he has the power to do magic even with a boring storyline
But as a movie they cant capture the magic and suddenly you just can see it black and white how bad it is
This is not a good movie.

Movie was dumb and based on some kid who was faithful to God. Took two hours to get that message across. Had some pointless scene where two people start getting horny and are about to make out, but then the female gets an orgasm and three monitors blow up. WTF? So uncalled for. About some "Chinese" miners but not only is the story stupid, the people who filmed it must have been stupid too. Just because the movie creators are ignorant doesn't mean the viewers are. At least have the "Chinese" people speaking Chinese and not Vietnamese. And since when did Chinese have letters in their alphabet. Images of Vietnamese stores with Vietnamese text. IGNORANT PEOPLE. Is this suppose to be a scary movie? This might be some scary stuff back in they day but to have it remade in 2006 is simply a waste of the viewers time. Im just going on because i need ten lines cuz they want me to keep talking about how horrible this movie is. Stupid movie... and long just like "IT"
