I'm from the North Jersey area, so a lot of the fun of the Sopranoes is relating it to the things I see and do in my daily life, though despite this, I didn't really have HBO and never really watched the Sopranoes, when it had premiered on television. Except with the 6 season, I saw the whole show on DVD. It was not the first television show I experienced through DVD, and if you've done that before, very well, you could know how incredible it is, and I have to say that while I greatly enjoyed a lot of what the Sopranoes had to offer, in the end, I was disappointed by how the show had been done and what direction it moved to. Judging the show as a whole, what made the show great was practically absent come parts of season 4, and the over-arching brilliance wasn't there anymore with the third season.
The Positive Aspects:
-The 1st, 2nd, and parts of the 3rd seasons are as great as any domestic/mob drama worthy of the praise its been getting. The characters are sublime and the themes and story lines are great art as well as television at top-notch. -The acting of the main characters is exquisite and enormously realized with AJ, the son, being the only exception. -Even, when it's off, it's still compelling
The Negative Aspects: -The show tapers after the 2nd season into weaker story lines and uneven characterization and ceases to make its over-arching thematic points effectively, every season already being progressively worse from the get-go now entering into the territory of non-great television. - The seasons are short, and the cast is huge, making a lot of plot-threads and maybe more than half the cast that deserves better set-up and/or development seem rushed, both under and overplayed, or too easily disposed of, at times egregiously, the tolerability of this coinciding with the show's decline. -The acting of the minor characters is very inconsistent, leaning more of the time in the worse direction, much more than what you could find on certain shows off paycable.
The finale, which is greatly talked of, really doesn't matter, because the show thematically shot itself in the foot even before its halfway point. Each season got progressively worse starting with the first one. The second one was still incredible, and if the show ended at the end of the second season it could have gone down as the amazing show it should be. Instead we get a mess of a television program that wants to say something but cluttered itself way to much to. Check the show out because it contains certain aspects so touching and so grand that they shall stay with you, being profoundly artistic and exceedingly relevant to modern society, television at its pinnacle of art/entertainment. But if it starts running out of gas, that's when you should stop watching, because it'll never get it back.

Watching the whole thing again front to back, series 4 on seems to start to wander a little. Series 5 can, at times, be simply dull. Series 6: what is that about? It's like all the back stories they realised they hadn't done needed to be told, and episodes with main stories that have no reason to be there. Series 6 is actually a different show. It's direction and pace are fundamentally off. It has the sense of trying to squeeze stuff in, but then not bothering with editing it down. It seems indulgent.
In my head I loved the sopranos. But it doesn't quite stand up to its memory.

It's a solid show, but overhyped in my opinion. Bet it was peak television when it aired, but today the standards are much higher. The acting is great, plot lines are all over the place, but coherent. Sometimes they just throw you in the middle of something that might or might not be connected to something else.
Where the show lacks the most is building up to an event. Many times throughout the show the main characters or side characters for that matter do something huge plot line wise out of the blue without any foreshadowing or building up the hype to the said event. Another thing I'd say is missing is the dramatization of major scenes such as "taking out" a certain big character. That could be argued with how casual it was for the mobsters to do such things. I just judge show by how many emotions they can get out of me and honestly the Sopranos didn't do a great job in that department overall. Otherwise everything else was great. Loved the ending too.

I would love for someone with the editing programs to edit out all of the nongangster material; just leaving it in ONLY if it's needed for the gangster story lines.
I would pay for it.
That would be a 10. Lol For what it is, I have to give it a 9.
Janice sucked.
Furio was the best character, and was hardly in it - all for the dumb story arc with Tony's wife.
The stuff with his mom went on for far too long. What a great episode it was when she finally died.
Vito's gay story line shoehorned in was HORRIBLE.
And the ending to this epic series was trash, only surpassed by 'No Country for Old Men'.
But still, some of the best TV in history.
Best Episode: Chris and Pauly lost in the woods.
EDIT: this had 7 of 7 helpful votes, and then went to 1 of 1. Clearly, there's something afoot.

Surely we are in front of a good TV series, the cast is superlative, above all the legendary and late James Gandolfini, the characters are excellent and the staging really well taken care of, however there are some things that do not convince me, first of all the duration, too many seasons and too long, many episodes are boring, most of the time the show tends to forget that it is a crime / noir and focuses too much on family drama, ok the series is also about Tony's family, but sometimes in a verbose and exaggerated way, full bets on the love problems of Tony's two hateful children are really useless, full bets on his wife's nonsense lead nowhere and only serve to fill the void, last but not least I think this show has the WORST ending ever conceived, a real mockery of the viewer, you can't, after 6 seasons and almost 100 episodes, end a show like that.
So, in conclusion, good show, but not exceptional, the crime tv shows are other masterpieces, Gomorrah, Breaking Bad, Romanzo Criminale or the shield.

It definitely doesn't deserve the high rating it has. The series should be about mafias, but it is anything but that. A simple family drama, with sometimes some mafia elements. And every time you think something big is going to happen, nothing happens.
Very often Tony does things that don't make any sense at all and out of the blue and things that don't even contribute to him. The main character doesn't seem wise and I doubt such a person could run a mob.
There is definitely a much better series, even with lower ratings, that are worth watching. I honestly don't understand how this series is so highly rated. Just don't waste your time on Sopranos but if you like Mexican telenovelas, watch this one too. Big disappointment!!
Ps most of the characters are antipathetic and irritating.

I didn't watch my first episode of this until after the series had ended. And I've got the BluRay's out about once a year since then for a rewatch. It was a pretty good series that showed the day to day life of mobsters. The evil things they do. The occasional compassionate thing they do for someone. And the twisted ways they justify the whole thing while believing they're basically good people. I find it really enjoyable. There were good episodes and bad episodes. But they averaged out to be pretty solid after all was said and done. The only TRULY BAD EPISODE was the finale. They should have given us a proper ending. If I wanted to use my imagination about what happened at the restaurant, I would have never watched the first episode and just 'used my imagination' instead like they did in the days before television.

The Sopranos is often hailed as one of the greatest TV shows of all time but in my opinion it's slightly overrated. I would give it a solid 7 out of 10. While there are certainly aspects of the show that deserve praise such as strong performances and a unique atmosphere it also has noticeable flaws that make it hard for me to consider it among the very best. One of the biggest issues I had was with the pacing. At times it felt like nothing was really happening. Episodes would drift by with minimal movement in the storyline or character development and then suddenly within a few episodes everything would accelerate at once. This inconsistent rhythm made it difficult to stay fully invested and it often felt like the show was stalling only to suddenly shift gears without warning. The final season in particular left me underwhelmed. Especially in the last few episodes it started to feel like the writers were searching for an ending without actually knowing how to bring everything together naturally. The tension that had been built up across the series seemed to dissolve into uncertainty and by the end I wasn't left with a sense of closure or satisfaction. It just didn't feel as though the journey had paid off in the way it should have. While I understand why The Sopranos was groundbreaking for its time I think that newer shows have surpassed it in both storytelling and production value. The praise it receives for changing television is understandable but in terms of actual enjoyment and narrative quality I believe there are series out there that are more consistent and engaging. All in all I respect what the show tried to do but I don't share the widespread opinion that it is one of the best ever made.

Watchable, mainly because of the acting and characters, but apart from that, I wouldn't give it more than a 6-7 because it was cliche and predictable. Maybe also because I reference many crime and mafia type dramas that came before it, also during and after which I far prefer. Maybe also because of other people saying how good it was before I watched it had built it up to be something amazing but it just ended up paying an anti-climax really. The genre has been done so many times, there is not much left to the imagination to be honest. For that reason, I couldn't even get past series one so maybe also my review would be based on the early episodes only.

This series can get under your skin and drag you along like a trawled marlin... SOme of the acting is truly terrific, small things (like Gandolfini's little gestures, scratching his chest, while talking to his wife). The back and forth is good. Some of the episodes are really well done, riveting and even realistic...
The "but..." comes with what is realistically believable, and what is just irritating, because it is seems taken from contemporary books about parenting.... Yes, the grumpy adolescent children... Tony Soprano's daughter's evolution is smooth, from daddy's girl to questioning adult, though her liberalism does feel a little exaggerated. Her brother, AJ, played by Robert Iler on the other hand is a little too "teenagery as seen from the adult standpoint." He would have needed more color, more nuance.... It seems like someone thought about it too late, in the scene with the bear, he suddenly shows the kind of fright a little boy might feel, runs to mommy.... and one expects some change...
But the series becomes repetitive as the ideas run out.... Suddenly we are stirring up past nonsense, digging up dead bodies..... and the constant flying off the handle by Tony and others becomes a distraction and appears very stilted. Sure, he's getting older, the old walrus syndrome is kicking in... By season 5, I was getting bored with these violent, feral, somewhat uncultured people. You begin wondering what do the women see in this man, whose only position in lying on top of these ladies and crushing them while performing perfunctory sex acts.
You wonder what Adriana wants with that violent junkie of a boyfriend, but Drea de Matteo pulls it off as the somewhat undereducated but very idealistic young woman, starry-eyed, but in a vicious reality.
The small parts often often manage to keep the tension on course .... one-legged., cynical Svetlana (Kliouka) , who essentially breaks off with Tony, the crazy (but gorgeous) Irina (played by Oksana Lada), who is so essentially catty...
It's definitely worth watching, but the series could have gained extra grades by simply sacrificing some episodes (like Cold Cuts...)

The Soprano's TV series start with a fantastic start emulating The Godfather in many ways... Yet, having its own persona that was compelling & addictive.
Season 1 through 5, were very entertaining; however, midway through season 5, it started to become tedious due to its repetitive plots.
The storylines in Season 6; episodes began to sway, causing the lack of focus in attention. It became a struggle to get to the end for a closure that was senselessly disappointing.
Perhaps it was writers block to complete this production with what was hopefully anticipated-for an exciting & fore filling closure to a stunning series.
Very disappointing to what start great & at its precipices-fizzled with great disappointment!

Take a pinch of GOODFELLAS, mix it with THE GODFATHER, add some Roman mythology and plenty of lowbrow comedy, and you have THE SOPRANOS, about a mob clan operating out of northern New Jersey. It's almost as entertaining as pro wrestling. I am not the biggest fan of this show, but I do admire James Gandolfini's very complicated Tony Soprano, a psychopath with an occasional glimmer of conscience. I also have come to admire te contributions of folks like gravel-voiced Dom Chianese as the bewildered but murderous Uncle Junior, silver-haired Tony Sirico as the perpetually perplexed Paulie and the very beautiful Edie Falco as the duplicitous, tough-as-nails Carmela Soprano. The violence is sudden and graphic, the body count steadily climbs each season, but it is often the small moments that matter most here. Watch Paulie and Tony's nephew Christopher (Michael Imperioli late of LAW & ORDER) as they get lost in the Pine Barrens and sit out a bitter cold night in an abandoned trruck, both convinced they've had it.

During the lockdown, I re-watched the entire 6 seasons of The Sopranos on HBOmax.
The first 2 seasons are a masterpiece; superb acting, casting, writing, sets, action, music, and the cohesiveness of the storylines were all impeccable. However, the series never recovered from the death of Livia (Nancy Marchand), and to a lesser degree, the premature whacking of Uncle Pussy (Vincent Pastore).
The last 4 seasons are disappointing and a big waste of time! They are nothing more than a hodgepodge of boring, disorganized unrelated stories. There are too many random new characters, too many repetitive storylines and whacks (Richie, Ralphie, Tony B.), agonizing long dreams, funerals, weddings, a French vacation, gay encounters, a weekend at the lake, Meadow's college minutia, and AJ's partying, all dragged on endlessly. These 4 seasons could have been condensed into 4 episodes. Further, the "grand finale" had no conclusion, and IMHO, was insulting and a rip-off to the viewers!
I highly recommend and encourage you to watch the first 2 seasons. They are the best mob drama that I've ever seen. But don't waste your time on the last 4 seasons. Nothing meaningful happens and importantly, you will never know how it ends.

I came late to this, I was sceptical about whether it was as great as everybody says. And indeed it isn't. There are no moments of heart-stopping tension, no exciting action, no moments that make you feel happy, none that send you to bed thinking or dwelling on it (in fact it's surprisingly easy to 'fuggedaboudi'). Although they always stop short of outright parody, any real grip on the viewer is sacrificed for mild humour, knowing references and general easy watching. There isn't enough continuity or 'story arc'; again and again, interesting possibilities are raised but dropped at the end of the episode.
Essentially it's a soap, only the characters are criminals: and the criminality is kept at arm's length, you never really see them do anything nasty. It gets by on the strange likeability of the characters, particularly Tony without whose blend of chumpish charm and physical threat the thing wouldn't work at all (and not the kids, like all drama kids they are annoying). I don't look forward to watching it, and I'm not sorry when it's over.
There's a serious change of pace in the final series. I don't know what prompted the double-length run, but it results in the pace of development being pretty much halved. The shooting, in particular, is used to slow everything way down and there are all kinds of unnecessary and largely uninteresting digressions; some episodes that have you drumming your fingers with their uneventfulness and excursions into pseudo-deep navel-gazing.
There are at least three better recent dramas, The Americans, Justified and Fargo (first two series), not to mention the real greatest of all time which is I, Claudius. Comparing The Sopranos to that is like comparing the Beano to the Sixteenth Chapel. It's just slick, well-made telly that passes the time pleasantly. And don't get me wrong: in these times, I'm grateful for that. Don't make me sleep with the fishes!

The sopranos came out guns blazing and ended with a dud. Each season was worse then the previous. The final season, and especially the series finale were as anti climatic as they come. The series finale was the worst episode of the shows run, David Chase basically gave the fans the middle finger. Rumors always swirl about a movie, but quite frankly who cares. If it happens it will only be because James gandolfini needs a paycheck. The only reason I even give it 7 stars is because in the beginning it really was a great show, then they spent a hole season on sal and johnnycakes which was the beginning of the end. When Tony escaped from Johnny saks house and walked all the way back to jersey, I knew I had entered the theatre of the absurd. Paulie roughing up a lawn guy and stealing his lawnmower, gimme a break. The only character that was great from start to finish was sylvio, who was a true mobster until the end. If you haven't watched yet, do yourself a favor and just watch the first 2 or 3 seasons, after that it's just pure disappointment.
HBO's critically acclaimed drama 'The Sopranos' is by far the best show on television! It's a great show involving a mobster, Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) who deals with is wife Carmela (Edie Falco), his daughter Meadow (Jamie Lynn-Sigler), his son Anthony, Jr. (Robert Iler), his mother Livia (Nancy Marchand), his uncle Junior (Dominic Chianse), his psychiatrist Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) and other mobsters: Christopher (Michael Imperioli), (Vincent Pastore), Paulie (Tony Sirico), Silvio (Steven Van Zandt), Richie (David Proval), Ralphie Cifaretto (Joe Pantoliano), Tony B. (Steve Buscemi), Carmine Lupertazzi (Tony Lip), Johnny Sack (Vincent Curatola), Little Carmine Lupertazzi (Ray Abruzzo), Patsy Parisi (Dan Grimaldi), Eugene Pontecorvo (Robert Funaro), Vito Spatafore (Joe Gannascoli), and more. The first season is the best, then the fifth, then the third, then the second and finally the fourth. Cast highlights are James Gandolfini (Emmy Winner), Edie Falco (Emmy Winner), Lorraine Bracco (Emmy Nominee), Michael Imperioli (Emmy Winner), Dominic Chianse (Emmy Nominee), Nancy Marchand (Emmy Winner), Drea de Matteo (Emmy Winner), Aida Turturro (Emmy Nominee), David Proval, Joe Pantoliano (Emmy Winner), Steve Buscemi (Emmy Nominee) and Vincent Curaltola. Writers highlights are Robin Green, Mitchell Burgess, David Chase, Frank Renzulli and Terence Winter. Grade: A+

After reading couple of lists of all times best TV shows and seeing The sopranos there I decided to give it a try.I have to say I was left a little disappointed maybe because I had higher expectations for the show.Haven't I watched shows like The wire,Breaking bad and True detective before I might have given it 9.
The show goes a bit slow for my liking and the seasons usually end a bit strange almost like someone suddenly decided they had enough episodes to wrap it up so is time for a break.
The good thing about the show going a bit slow is that at least characters are well developed there no random people suddenly popping in and acting is also great.Script is believable and they are not afraid to get rid of key characters ( almost like R.R.Martin wrote it or he might have I haven't checked).
Overall a good show but at least to me not a must watch.

Take the slightest offense, blow it completely out of proportion, yammer on endlessly... Janice was insanely annoying. And now? The Janices run the world.
As a result, The Sopranos is difficult to binge these days. What seemed satirical at the time? It has become our Truth.
Add in the vanishing plots, pretty much every character displaying multiple personality disorder every other episode?
Well, other than Paulie. In a current episode, Tony might be considering having him whacked... again... again. This time because Paulie isn't on board with Tony's teenage grandson's sex change operation.
The Mafia forever transformed into the Melfia. And Janice is still whining. Forevermore. Don't stop. Believin'...

There just weren't many redeeming qualities with the main characters. Otherwise it's a great mob series
