Watching this for the first time in 2023

This came up as 'recommended' for me a few weeks ago and I'm so glad it did!! Obviously I don't live under a rock and have heard of The Sopranos before but being a young Aussie I didn't see how I would click with a show like this at all. Somehow it got me, I haven't finished yet but am about half way through and the more I watch the better it keeps getting. The storyline, acting, dialogue and chemistry between all the characters never misses and I am never bored. I could watch this show for days straight without loosing interest. I think it'll live on forever as one of the best shows ever made!! Tell me why in 2023 I am so intrigued my mob life in the Italian-American community ? Who knows but who cares! Long love the Sopranos.

Cournerstone of all modern TV series

It took me around two years to complete the series, but I think it was for the better. I was kind of not used to this TV-show structure where the episodes are more like a series of discrete, independent from one another, complete mini-stories with barely palpable main plot thread happening somewhere in the background sewing all the episodes into one fabric of a cohesive world. That being said, I feel like I lost nothing by not binge-watching the whole series in a matter of weeks. Since there wasn't any intricated and convoluted story many details of which I would had to remember in order to enjoy it, I gave myself time to savour each episode independently from one another. Initially, you may not grasp the greatness of "The Sopranos", but as the seasons pass, the multifaceted and deep characters start to grow on you, levaing you no choice but to appreciate the genius of the scriptwriting as well as the perfomance of the actors it was written for. Take, for example James Gandolfini, who seems to have been born for the role of Tony Soprano. I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that his performance in the show is the most prominent in all of the history of television. As a result, "The Sopranos" transformed the industry and set a new standard for TV series to strive for.

Funny, poignant and entertaining all at the same time

When I finished the Sopranos I understood why it was so well loved and talked about. When it came out, I wasn't so interested in it. But now, most shows are so poor I have started to go back in time to see what I can find. The Sopranos filled that void, so much so that I am considering rewatching it to see what I missed.

You have to watch and listen carefully to each episode and every part of the dialogue to ensure you understand where the story is going. From start to finish, each episode influences the next and no lines are forgotten as they add to the weight of what is to come.

The Sopranos is in my top 5 tv shows.

How Could You Not?

Take note streaming producers, this is how you make a television show. Storytelling of this nature is meant to be confrontational and not play into making a statement.

Watching this again on a streaming service, certainly makes me appreciate how great this is. Which to be honest I didn't truly appreciate it the first time around.

If you don't like the gangster/wise guys narrative, move along.

Ek number.

Sublime. What David Chase and his team did is not only that they gave us a great series , they paved the way for most of our favourite shows having the anti-heros as main protagonists.

A review after having watched the whole series

I don't believe in reviews that are written after only having watched 2 or 3 episodes. So I held back until having completed the series. This review is meant for people who are thinking about watching The Sopranos and want to know a little about what to expect.

What is it?

The Sopranos is a show about Tony Soprano, mobster from New Jersey, and his life, his family and his job. In the course of the show we also get to know the other persons in his life quite well. A huge part of the show is about Tony's attempt to balance his private life and being a Mafia boss, often with the help of his therapist, Dr. Melfi.

What's it like?

Imagine a soap opera. But imagine a soap opera with exceptional writing, great cinematogrophy, good acting, dark humour, lots of nudity and violence, constant swearing and great italian food.

Should you watch it?

Absolutely, if you don't have a problem with a rather slow narration tempo, story arcs over multiple episodes (and seasons) and the things I mentioned above. I'd suggest you watch 3 or 4 episodes. If you're into it by then, you will love the whole show.

I personally love The Sopranos for the grey areas between good and evil. The characters feel like real persons, they are more than just "the funny one", "the smart one" or "the sexy one". They make mistakes, they regret them, they try to make the best of their situation. No one kills just because they are bad guys. They all have their reasons, even if they may be hard to understand for me.

I subtracted one point because I had the feeling that the show dragged a little bit in the mid-seasons. But I stayed with it because I wanted to find out what happens to the people I love watching. And sometimes there are huge pay-offs and some genuine wtf-moments that you can look forward to.

Lastly, The Sopranos is truly groundbreaking for tv as we know it today. It started in 1999 when tv series were mostly episodic, tv actors were considered second rate and tv characters were mostly just good or bad. Its influence on current tv can't be overstated.

I am the hardest critic you will ever meet.

This is the greatest TV how ever. Interesting, amoral characters, multi plot lines, epic pettiness, great real family issues. There isn't 1 character in the show that isn't garbage on some level (even the Priests and Drs). I would rank Tony in the top 5 TV characters of all time, the other 4 being; Fonzie, Capt Kirk, Archie Bunker, the Little Fat guy from Seinfeld (I never watched an episode of Seinfeld but people seem to like him).

Masterpiece

Just hearing Tony say "What you gonna do?" at funerals and seeing his dreams are worth watching 86 episodes alone. The show is full of detail, everything has got more meaning than it seems. Serious tone but packed with dark humour.

Solid mobster drama

Say what you want about the finale, but that should not have any impact on the legacy this series built. The series is expertly written and acted. It revolves around a crime family and the feuds they get into with rival families. If you're a fan of the likes of Godfather and Goodfellas, you'll seriously love this series. There's a fair bit of swearing and sudden unexpected violence which may not be for everyone. There's some pretty frightening disturbing scenes and your feelings about the characters will change in an instant at times. Ultimately the characters are portrayed as varying degrees of endearing until they're not. But that's criminals for you.

HBO's golden age

Time when HBO revolutionized TV with quality and public acclaim Tony soprano was one of the best hollywood anti-heroes along with Dexter Gandolfini's performance was one of the most impeccable things I've ever seen the series is extremely unwritten, subtle and well acted and the ending was controversial!

Morality in The Sopranos

I just watched the entire series box set over the course of about a week, so the whole thing is petty fresh in my mind.

My biggest take-away is the realization that almost every single character with any significant amount of screen time in this series is eventually exposed to be completely deplorable and vile to the core. Any of our expectations or hopes in the characters' basic humanity, that may be stirred momentarily by some token act of decency, are soon enough shattered by the ongoing and increasing acts of depravity. Despite the absence of any actual redemptive developments in any of the main characters, we see quite a few examples of the daunting meaninglessness, guilt, and emptiness beleaguering these people. This is clearly illustrated in Tony Soprano's chronic depression, panic attacks, and inability ever to take pleasure in other's good fortune or success.

There are two notable types of exceptions or juxtapositions to all these morally and spiritually deficient people. One is in the character of the Jewish Psychiatrist (Dr. Krakower) who Carmela visits in the 3rd season. He minces no words with Carmela (or with the viewer) as he incisively dissects the true nature of nearly every other character in the series, and explains the sole means by which they might find redemption: by rejecting the evil they habitually embrace, and by assuming responsibility for the harm they've done. After laying bare the ugly truth about 'The Sopranos,' Dr. Krakower utters the most important-and the most didactic-line in the entire series. It is a profound admonition both to Carmela and to us: "One thing you can never say: that you haven't been told." It should go without saying that this is a clear reference to some sort of impending universal justice or judgment facing us all.

The other type of moral commentary peppered throughout the series is presented in the form of what may be either dream sequences and hallucinations, or supernatural visions and messages-or both. Several of the characters experience these phenomena as a type of premonition of the consequences that await them, or as glimpses, reminders, or evidence of a spiritual dimension of existence that is otherwise ignored or rejected by the characters as evidenced by their immoral and amoral lives.

'The Sopranos' is among the best television series ever made. Like most viewers, I found myself quite voyeuristically eager to watch each subsequent episode, and sadly disappointed by the untimely death of James Gandolfini and the abrupt ending of the series. However, I think we can surmise that whatever untold further adventures may have awaited The Sopranos, the ultimate trajectory of such lives can lead only downward to a hellish existence, and perhaps to hell itself.

the geometry of how a character should be written

The sopranos surprised me actually, at first I thought it was only about the infallible gangster who gets whatever he wants but I guess that I was completely impressed by the realistic writing of the show and the fresh interpretation of its complicated character Tony Soprano who is a mob boss and yet suffers from psychological issues and he sees a psychiatrist portrayed by the talented actor James Gandolfini. the sopranos revolutionized television for ever as it broke the criteria of the good one dimensional hero whose actions are often predictable and boring, on the contrary when it comes to this show it embraces a multilayered sophisticated construction for the character which defines the anti-hero complicated character. tony is not the only sophisticated character here most of the characters are well-written especially Carmella Soprano. you find your self arguably sympathize with these savage mass murderers because the show constantly try to humanize the characters so they are truly relatable, and its fleshed out through genuine dialogue not the cliché predictable type but the realistic type, where it gets sophisticated to navigate inside the subconscious and the human side of these characters. most of the show is extension of the subconscious of tony soprano and it is an iconic way to get insight of the character and his moral issues, and it was subtly handled especially when he is compelled to reflect his humanity before his psychiatrist doctor Melfi which for sure defies his narcissistic arrogant personality. my only take on the sopranos is that it was a little long so consequentially there is a little unnecessary exposition and some unrelatable characters, but for sure its one of the best shows ever made, and the show as a whole was a dense experience with the great ambiguous ending.

Perfect Mafia and family series

The success of this series is combining the family and the crime gang life like a normal way of life. Sopranos are like a normal family in many ways. The mafia job is like a job that's all. It is a good idea but I am also not sure iti is moral.

It's still ahead of It's time

Fitst viewed this in the Aughts. IAnd it's never been more true to life. Proves a point I've been contemplating for a while: American civilization has been going downhill since 2000. It's everything that Tony Soprano has been dealing with, too. Trump Republicanism , capitalism, Biden: Democrarism: they're all dead in the water. Just like Tony's ducks. Sorry to the Milllenials and GenZz-ers. You arrived too late. Boomers and Grn X apologize to you for ruining it all.

The Sopranos

The first season is really different from many other TV dramas. The subtle psychology of many characters is shown through the actor's performance and some later details. It really needs to be watched very carefully. For example, if you are angry with someone but don't show it in person, but later other details erupt, it's really close to reality.

A work of art

I had watched Boardwalk Empire prior to seeing the Sopranos. It was a popular show when it aired on TV, but I was still a kid then and did not really have access to it. After watching Boardwalk Empire, which by the way, impressed me a lot, I was very curious about the Sopranos.

A brief, spoiler free and sincere review of this show on my part would be like this: The Sopranos is an interesting series, which is an interesting combination of a really well made gangster flick, a drama, not even missing out on elements of comedy and a number of other genres. It is a masterpiece. Having said that, I would probably rate it with a 10, if I took into consideration that the series started in 1999 and really set a new point of view for TV shows.

Excellent.

A insight in the mafia through the eyes of a troubled man

The show runs for the fourth season now and there hasn't been a single dull moment. The characters are very well developed, the incidents look very lifelike and the story looks very original even after 3 full seasons. The innovative feature in the series is the character of Tony Soprano who unlike all screen mobsters (until now) seems to have problems with his conscience, work and family and seeks help from a psychiatrist. That approach, in my opinion, is why the series is such a big hit. It makes people feel like Soprano (he has problems, I have too) unlike other mafia stories where mobsters were pictured as strong guys that could handle anything. Anyway, it is a must-see!

I am going to miss this show..

I've always longed to see a show in its entirety as it ran on television. Above all, I believe this heightens the emotional attachment that grows between the audience and the characters portrayed, not to mention the anticipation of waiting in-between seasons. Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky with 'The Sopranos' and am yet to experience this with a TV show (something I hope to correct very soon). Needless to say, in the 2 months that it took to blitz the 6 seasons of this show, I grew hugely attached to the majority of the characters of this show, and one of the most enigmatic, compelling characters portrayed on screen – Tony Soprano. The show is vast; it covers many aspects of life, from the minute details of household troubles, to the tests of morality that we can all relate to. 'The Sopranos' succeeds in bringing the audience right into the heart of organised crime, and the consequences and events that surround the people caught up within this. The viewer finds themselves feeling sympathy for even the most disgusting characters at times – I for one, tried to justify the actions and choices they made, all because of the attachment that had grown between myself and the characters. This, in my eyes, is the sign of a great drama. After finishing the 86th and final episode, it is safe to say I am left with a gap, which only this New Jersey family can fill. 'The Sopranos' will grip you right from the Pilot, and I'd be surprised if you didn't feel driven to keep watching throughout the entire series. It is up there with the best and will no doubt be heralded as a classic.

A terrific achievement.

Masterpiece

I don't usually enjoy mafia stories unless it's about Tony Soprano. And also, I can't watch an 86-episode series in one month unless it's The Sopranos.

The Sopranos took the first step firmly and was continuously evolving from the very first episode to the last. The allure of the personal lives of the supporting characters in some episodes surpasses that of the main character, and this multitude of characters has contributed to the beauty of the story.

Contrary to most series that use attractive appearances to attract viewers, many characters in this story are not very appealing at first glance. For example, the main character Tony may not be appealing to some at first sight. However, what has made this series worth watching is the actors' performances, the engaging story, the right direction, and a camera that is not seeking self-display.

By watching the series over time, I connected with the characters, and in the middle of the series, I realized that the lead actor, James Gandolfini, from 2013, had passed away. This fact was so strange and unbelievable to me that I felt bad for a few days, and then I realized that the director had managed to relate us well to the story's characters.

The Sopranos is on one side mafia-themed and ruthless, and on the other deeply familial, showcasing many complexities of parent-child relationships. Furthermore, the psychological aspect of the series in some scenes is like a classroom, and one can learn from it.

Overall, The Sopranos, with all its terrifying scenes, boundless violence, numerous betrayals, and consecutive murders, is not only full of emotional and dramatic moments but sometimes becomes intensely humorous and makes one laugh.

By and large, TV gold

I can't add an awful lot to the positive reviews already on here - great acting, balanced writing, multi-faceted characters, a great anti-hero in Tony, great commentary on millennial American life. The integral use of psychiatry coupled with Tony's mother issues are especially fresh and humorous. Several other characters add a lot of depth - Hesh's interesting history as an outsider muscling in, Ralphie's total irredeemable viciousness, Chris' dual desires in life, and so on.

I have to dig into some of the criticisms however, especially the 'it glorifies violence/belittles Italian-Americans' one. Most of the writers and actors are Italian-American, would they attack themselves? There are several positive Italian-American characters - Artie Bucco the chef, Dr. Melfi and her family and the Cusamanos next door to the Sopranos. Indeed, Dr Melfi's ex-husband notes in season 1 that only a tiny minority of Italian-Americans have ever had Mob connections (certainly smaller than the proportion of African-Americans involved in crime, dare I say it. In both cases poverty and lack of opportunity are the biggest causes).

Most of the characters don't really choose the life they have; family background or circumstances largely corner them into it. Outsiders (even of Italian stock) who attempt to integrate into it usually meet distressing ends - Matthew and his friend in season 2, for example. If you criticise this show, I assume Frasier made you want to be a psychiatrist, or Will & Grace made you want to go homosexual? Presumably you won't listen to rap music that discusses gangs, or r'n'b which discusses promiscuity, or rock music which discusses drugs (or any other combination)? People aren't as stupid as some of you make out....

Not everything is perfect however. A lot of characters have only appeared once, when by all logic they should have been seen or at least mentioned in previous episodes - Tracee the dancer, Meadow's friend Ally, Uncle Junior's ladyfriend (supposedly for 20 years until they split in season 1).
