There is a very brief bar fight.

There is a very brief scene where a bus sets on fire.

There are two brief pictures of people being lynched and of a man who was beat to death, both in a newspaper clipping. Both pictures are very graphic.

A father is forced to spank his son in a public coffee house. The hand is shown going up and the scene cuts. It is sad, because the father is forced against his will to do so.

There are several racial comments in the movie.

The word negroes was shown on a newspaper clipping.

Nigger was used over 15 times.

Hell was used around 3 times.

In one scene, SNNC practices for a sit-in. The people sit down and the others do terrible things to them. The sitters aren't allowed to do anything about it. The people blew smoke in their face, poured ketchup and powder and milk all over them. They were spit on, screamed at and hit. This scene was pretty intense while there was no blood or gore.
