Puppy Love

Alexander has a crush on a girl at school, Gloria Grant (Judy Levinson). Gloria's parents are said to be uppity and Dagwood and Blondie want to show them they're "social equals". Mr. Grant (character actor Herb Vigran) is a client of Mr. Dithers. Mr. Dithers promises to make Dagwood look good to him. Blondie tries a different approach, pretending for Dagwood to accidentally bump into Mr. Grant while walking their dogs. It goes awry when he allows Mr. Grant's tiny dog King Kong to get away. Meanwhile, Blondie gets in good with Mrs. Grant when she volunteers to be in her play. She volunteers Dagwood to play the title character in "Charley's Aunt". As promised, Mr. Dithers talks up the Bumsteads and brings Mr. Grant over to meet the family. They walk in on Dagwood dressed as Charley's Aunt, who says he is Dagwood's mother. Will the charade affect the Grants' approval of Alexander?

This is the only ep of the '50s Blondie TV series starring Arthur Lake as Dagwood I have on DVD which also has an ep of "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The Beverly Hillbillies", and "The Andy Griffith Show" on it. He gets in trouble again with the father of a daughter (Judy Levinson) his son Alexander (Stuffy Singer who was also in the unaired pilot I reviewed with Hal LeRoy as Mr. Bumstead) has a crush on. This father is also a client for his boss Mr. Dithers (Florenz Ames)! Oh, and Dag also dresses as Charlie's Aunt for a play. Pamela Britton also reprises her role in the pilot as the title character. Ann Barnes is Cookie this time around. Anyway, this was a very funny ep especially when Hal Peary was performing as Herb Woodley especially when he does that laugh I loved hearing as a kid when he was Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve on his radio show, "The Great Gildersleeve". Also appearing were Hollis Irving as Harriet Woodley and Herb Vigran as the client. And Daisy, of course. After this series ended, Arthur Lake did no more on screen appearances. He died on January 9, 1987.
