Like other reviewers of this movie, I can't believe the low ratings that some people gave it. I rented this movie as a lark. Other than hearing his name, I was not really familiar with Tyler Perry nor had seen any of his other productions. My Hubby (of 30+ years) is out-of-town, and because we have only sons, I get out-voted a lot and thus don't get to see many "chick flicks." I discovered that this film is neither a "chick flick" nor a "black flick." It is a comedy-drama HUMAN interest film about four married couples who vacation together once a year to reaffirm their marriages. The situations that these couples face are those that anyone who's been married any length of time might relate to. I loved it! It made me laugh and cry and think. What more can you ask of a film?! It was beautifully filmed and the acting was top-notch. Sure there were a few weak spots here and there, but all-in-all, well-crafted.

First of all I must say that I don't understand the low ranking, it is truly an underestimation of this film. I must admit that while I am a Tyler Perry fan I have been underwhelmed by his previous box office offerings. This film for me was a welcomed departure from his other films, it just seemed more professional, well directed, and the casting was phenomenal. Evan though it was rather preachy it seemed much less "after-school-specialish" than his initial movies. Jill Scott was amazing, Tasha Smith was Hilarious, and Janet Jackson wasn't as boring as she usually is. I hope this film is a precursor of more to come from Tyler Perry.

I just caught this film it is about relationships, marriage and the concept of expecting perfection vs. the reality of every day life weighing in on relationships. I laughed often and cried several times as well.
On the whole this was white cinema done with black faces but such a trend is long over due (if I have to watch one more trailer about how hard life in the hood without anyone fixxing their situation or the benefits to selling drugs and pimping I may go on a shooting spree). However, don't let this fool you-the writing was top rate and while some dialogue rehash there was a lot of very original dialogue as well. My only real complaint of the film was its sterility in many shots a lack of warmth within some home settings and among the performers as a whole.
There seemed to be little genuine commaraderie between the actors particularly in the earlier scenes. They were supposed to be friends since college but they were stiff in their reuniting with each other.
Also there is the scene were the overweight wife is forced to drive to the reunion by herself and all the women are worried for her safety yet when she enters the cabin the next day no one runs over to greet her they wait for her to come to them. Despite some of these often repeated mistakes (not just here but in other movies) this movie was very very good. I enjoyed it almost as much as The Four Seasons but unlike the Four Seasons this film follows all the characters all the way through the film- a nice touch in giving overall closure. Janet Jackson was my least favorite; portraying the celebrated novelist who lost a child but the the other performances were powerful enough to over shadowed her lack of depth. This was the first Tyler Perry film I have seen and I must say his 2 weeks at top box office is well justified here.

I'm not going to lie , I guess you can say I'm a somewhat fan of Tyler Perry's work. With that being said, i also don't expect his films to be at all exceptional. It's just a great laugh when hes playing Madea as she serves as a comic relief from the bad storyline, almost making you forget about it Therefore, i try to avoid his films without the latter character.
This film however totally changed my perception of Non madea related films. to summarize the plot, The four couples, who are also best friends, converge on a house in the mountains for a week-long retreat that has become their ritual of sorts to help work out their marital problems and ask the question "Why did I get married?". Though the couples have committed to being physically present for the week, some of them have not been emotionally present in their respective marriages for quite some time. The week is not planned out in a well-programmed sequence, so the events unfold somewhat spontaneously, beginning with their "adventures" in getting up to the mountain retreat.
The film is bound to make you go through a wave of emotions & the drama filled climax scenes are seat edgers and doesn't tend to the cliché story lines Tyler Perry is so used to using. Each couple displays a different problem going on in the relationship , therefore making it a relatable experience. The cast is great and aside from a few corny comic relief moments, you will also get a good laugh here and there.
Enjoyable Film that i recommend watching!

I am a Tyler Perry fan and as an African American filmmaker, I respect his success. Moreso, it was good to see African-Americans on films in a classy visual. Fans will like this movie a lot. Looking at it from my technical film school eye, there were definitely certain flaws with dialogue. It's not a slapstick comedy so some of the dialogue was over the top and unrealistic in this type of movie. The whole plane scene in particular rubbed me the wrong way. If I was watching scary movie or little man, I would accept it. The scene would have worked better in that type of comedy movie but didn't truly fit here with all the other story plots. Other than that complaint, it's good to see a nice black film and even better to see "US" getting out and supporting it in droves.

Tyler Perry knows his audience. He knows how to tell a story and keep it moving. The characters in this were on point! (How many of us have met someone like "Angela"?!) I was very impressed with his ability to address love & marriage from different angles while keeping it lighthearted.
As a few commenters have noted, from a technical perspective, there's definitely room for growth and some quibbling with story details. The thing we cranky film types have to remember is that Technical mastery a good film doth not make. It's all about STORY.
Take it from Box Office Mojo: 'Why Did I Get Married' Brightens Drab Weekend.
Check it out. It's worth the watch.

I am shocked that it got such a low rating. If it wasn't for the fact that I like Tyler Perry movies I would've skipped it. The ratings must've been put in by people who didn't even watch the movie. But I am 24 years old, I've been in a long relationship before, but I have yet to be married. It taught me a great lesson, I now want to treat women more respectfully because of this movie. I applaud Tyler Perry for putting this movie in a way a young man can understand.
I'd recommend this movie to anyone who wants to learn a lot about marriage, and how to treat a woman or a man like a human being. Give this movie a chance and you will not regret it.

Normally I get hoodwinked at Tyler Perry's movies. The trailers are funny and I run to theaters only to be disappointed.
This time around the he came through. Why I got married came through in a big way. Its funny. its inspiring and I have never seen black people look so damn good on screen. Everything from the lush tones of the skin, the styling, the homes (wow) were amazing. The performances were fantastic. I've read reviews where critics have called janet jackson dead wood. That is not the case. Her performance is actually really good.. i was surprised. All of the performers have a synergy that makes it all work... which is what makes this a great movie.
Kudos to Mr. Perry. Job very well done.

I think this movie was great, it don't deserve the 3.2 rating, the movie has a very good message, is kind of funny and i think every people with girlfriend, married, should see it! you can learn a lot of things from this movie! Thumbs up for Tyler Perry! i don't know if the people who gives this rating is racist, but if you find this movie bad, send me an email! because you wont regret, I've seen any others movie rated with 8/10 and this is way better! I think Janet Jackson is a good actress and she shows her talent in this movie! overall the movie is well directed, well acting and everything is fine! And this is my firs Tyler's Perry's movie, i don't even know if he had more movies! please tell me if he haves more movies to see it.
I went to see WHY DID I GET MARRIED? to support a film which featured a fellow employee's wife, Denise Boutte, and I was not disappointed in her beauty, nor her performance as Trina. I felt the story and the characters were reflective of all men and women who struggle daily with their careers and marriage in an attempt to combine both successfully. The film shows how hard this is to accomplish.
The journey the characters take and the reality of the dialog as they gather at a weekend reunion rang true to me and the brilliance of the Tyler Perry film is this is a film that transcends color lines and the characters cry, battle, laugh and move on in their lives just as the average family does today in America, and across continents. Bravo Janet Jackson in your role as I thought she was marvelous. I would like to see a follow up to this film and to find out how the characters have traveled.
