Pleasant surprise

Picked this one up whilst browsing new release horrors and I'm so pleased I did. The story is a little all over the place and could have been simplified, but some really great performances and chills! Some very subtle shadowy ghosty moments that could have been made more obvious (I only noticed because my daughter pointed them out to me). I was particularly impressed by the woman who played Maria, Aislinn De'Ath-it's not often you see female characters that aren't supposed to be perfect but are also sympathetic. What struck me was how human Maria was, not always doing the right thing, not always being a perfect mom or girlfriend but trying so hard. It was a really beautiful performance, and there's a moment towards the end of the movie that really shows the range of this actress. I also thought the chemistry between the two female leads was very good (although I felt the actress who played the girlfriend wasn't all that natural). Always nice to see Oded Fehr too, but I felt he mumbled his way through the scene which was a shame.

The ending totally caught me off guard and was a real fun one. For a little British film I'd not heard of before I watched it, I've got to say, I'm impressed in general, I see a lot of bad horror out there but this had a lot to be pleased with.

Good movie!

I would highly recommend this movie! The jumps were good and performances were too) Even the special effects is well done.

The only downside, the plot got little jumbled, but that's ok.

Entertaining indie horror

I thought the acting was more genuine than in most horror films. Often the dialogue and behavior of the characters is so unrealistic. Aislinn De'Ath did a great job portraying a flawed mother of two girls who is struggling with a balance to keep them safe and let them become their own selves. Worth a watch!

Indie horror done right

Indie Horror is always going to divide audiences-you always get people who go in expecting some crazy high budget affair that's had all the time and resources in the world to be made. I would say Lair falls into the small section of indie horror that values narrative over camp jump scares or trashy shlock.

I was struck by the talent of the leading women in the film, Aislinn De'Ath performs at a level you don't often see on the indie circuit, I hope to see her in more soon - and both daughters gave good performances given that they don't seem to have done much else film wise. Alexandra Gilbreath was also very watchable.

Where the film drags is the beginning, I would have connected more if it had focussed more on the family and their journey rather than Caromore who felt like he should have been less heavily featured. I also would have done away with the change of chronology towards the end which was confusing.

Other than that, Lair shines in a genre of indie films that often flops. It attempts to do a new twist on some classic traditions and that should be applauded, it kept my attention and I didn't see the ending coming.

Good plot, well written, good effects.

I would highly recommend this movie, especially after some of the absolute drivel that I have watched recently.

I usually read the reviews to films, before I watch them, but didn't when I came across this movie lair.

Although this movie seems a bit wooden, by poor acting, it delivers on suspense, sarcasm, great one liners by carramoor, and supernatural horror. Good twist plot, right at the end.

Although most of the characters don't seem, ' best chosen' for their parts, it does deliver on a good plot.

I nearly turned it off after 10 minutes, but, I beg you, please persist, you'll be surprised. Great supernatural thriller.
