A Line in the Sand

Halfway through this film, I found myself thinking, "This is like watching a really good play!" (in all the best ways); I researched and realized that yes, the film is based on a theatrical performance called "The Mayor's Limo."

It shows in the performances -- this is a well-acted, well-told drama that takes place one night at the precinct after a homeless man, Banzai, urinates on the Mayor's limo and gets himself locked up for the night. The cops on duty are surly and all- business at first, but as they work to unpack Banzai's backstory, a nuanced tale unfolds - complicated by sudden interest from a nosy reporter and Banzai's unspoken leadership with the local homeless population.

Homelessness and mental illness are treated with a deft touch here, as we begin to uncover Banzai's backstory and figure out who he really is; the human side of police work, when explored sensitively, makes for rich and mineable territory in this genre and A Line in the Sand does not disappoint. A gently used but enjoyably dark sense of humor lend a subtle charm to the story and it's definitely carried by solid performances from some stellar actors.

"A Line in the Sand" is a drama that tells the story of Banzai, a homeless and wondering man with a tortured past. After being booked by cops over a petty crime, the film's plot begins to slowly unravel as you begin to learn more about Banzai and the circumstances that got him to where he is.

Played by Jon Bernthal, watching Banzai's grip on reality slowly loosen throughout the film is a real treat, especially once the revelations of his past come to light from the perspectives of the case detectives who have detained him. Led by hard-nosed actor Bruce McGill, who also gives an awesome performance in this engrossing drama, the trio of cops in the movie add a smart and sophisticated edge to the film's world, adding a legitimate layer of intelligence and believably. This film is definitely worth a watch if you're into any kind of cop drama, as the performances and story don't disappoint!

Just got finish watching it. I went into it blind thinking it was a full on comedy. It was pretty good. Had familiar faces in it casting wise. Wasn't expecting it to get so depressing at the end. The heart strings were indeed strung. No spoilers. Would recommend. My only grip is I wish it was longer. But it is what it is.
