Written by first-time screenwriters Darren and Jeff Allen Geare, The Retaliators deserves praise for its storytelling and plotting. For a good hour or so, the direction in which the film heads is destination unknown.

A blood-soaked tale of morality and vengeance backed by a hard rocking soundtrack, what 'The Retaliators' lacks in depth, it makes up as a grimy horror thriller sure to appease grindhouse fans.

The Retaliators tries to transform musical stardom into a rock n’ roll horror epic, but suffers from “too many cooks” syndrome as the end product plays disjointed and can feel like a music video demo reel.

As a piece of horror, the film is certainly effective, achieving a kind of discomforting aura that is sometimes missing from the too-polished genre fare released all-too-frequently.

The film teases us with hat-tips and in-jokes and then pushes them aside to become an ungainly horror mashup that works in pieces, most notably during its climatic free-for-all, but not as a whole. In The Retaliators, the storylines fly in as many directions as the blood.

Without revealing which one wins out, I can assure you that a huge amount of murderous mayhem is unleashed, including death by woodchipper.
