During the actual shooting of the montage scene where Billy Joe (Matthew Ashford) is sitting in his boat in the lake at night trying to sort things out, the Director of Photography, Jordan Klein, Jr., began to softly throw rocks into the water just outside the line of sight of the camera. The entire crew went into shock and tried to stop him as the cameras continued to roll. He continued tossing the stones. Little did the rest of the group know that the ripple effects produced by the stones would make the scene one of the most artistic shots in the film.
The large boat where two of the characters spend the night was originally supposed to be in the water next to a dock. The lake was so low that the boat could not go in the water and the whole scene had to be rewritten based on the boat being on land. This then posed the problem of gracefully climbing a ten foot ladder to get into the boat as the cameras rolled.
During the barn scene where Billy Joe (Matthew Ashford) and Elaine (Julia Denton) sit down and have a "moment", the infestation of Florida mosquitoes and barn spiders was so bad that in between takes the actors would run into a protected area and get wiped off and sprayed down. The camera lenses also needed to be cleaned and prepped after each take.
The cast and crew drank over 50 cases of Red Bull energy drink and 10 cases of Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino, in addition to the usual Craft Services offerings.
