twisty Bourne

In London, CIA interrogator Alice Racine (Noomi Rapace) is still haunted by her failure resulting in a terrorist attack. She reluctantly accepts an emergency call to interrogate a suspect in a possible future biological attack. She starts to suspect something wrong and barely escapes from her handlers' bullets. With important information, she seeks help from her mentor Eric Lasch (Michael Douglas). Eric directs her to a safe house before he is killed. She finds thief Jack Alcott (Orlando Bloom) at the house and finds her superior Bob Hunter (John Malkovich) distrusting her. She gets help from Emily Knowles (Toni Collette) at MI5 but they are double-crossed.

Veteran British director Michael Apted has a Bond movie in his resume. This one feels more like a Bourne movie especially after Alice first uncovers the trap. The overall problem for me is the various twists. They are obvious and annoyingly twisty. The motivation is questionable. It seems like they already have the connection and the code in the end which makes all the chasing around unnecessary. Imagine the suspect delivering the cancel code. That's essentially what happens and it doesn't matter. Think about it. Also, the villain's motive is the stuff of cartoons. The overall premise needs some rethinking and rewriting.

Unlocked can't quite open itself up as it's locked down by clichés.

It's common knowledge that I like an exciting spy thriller, from the myriad of James Bond flicks to John Le Carré adaptations. Of course not every addition to the genre can match the high quality of those, yet naively I use them as the benchmark. Whilst not striving for perfection, Unlocked can't quite reach those heights. A field operative now interrogator is requested to interview a courier who is delivering a message to commence a terrorist attack. Well, atleast I think that's how the plot unraveled itself...honestly I'm not entirely sure on the details. The story is so convoluted with an array of convenient twists that soon turns thrills into predictable yawns, I couldn't quite follow every detail. Double crossing, treason, treachery, untrustworthy colleagues and a narrative structure that simply follows a linear trail of point A to point B to C, D, E all the way to Z. Encrypted messages and super spy jargon makes it even more difficult to follow and enjoy. Aside from the protagonist, all other characters were plain assets to the plot that were entirely expendable, making it difficult to relate to them thus consequently removing the surprise from the majority of twists. Riddled with clichés as much as being a riddle in itself. On the flip side, it's consistently well executed and exhumes the charm of a British television thriller. The acting was solid all round, particularly Rapace (who recently loves being in generic action thrillers) and Bloom (who isn't an elf or a pirate), and utilises its all-star power to elevate the basic script. Malkovich in a position of power? Always a pleasure to watch. An adequate balance of action shootouts, close combat scenes and intense interrogative dialogue that amalgamate for an entertaining watch. It's not memorable in the slightest (I've forgotten most of it already) but relishes in its modern terrorism scenario that it becomes somewhat watchable. The story remains locked, however its execution is enough to not class this as generic thriller as bad.

Lisbeth Salander meets Legolas meets Gordon Gekko meets Muriel

It's hard to tell what position Michael Apted's "Unlocked" is taking. It's about agents trying to stop terrorists, but since that sort of plot could draw allegations of racism or xenophobia, they tried to make it centrist. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun movie with all the twists and turns. I'd just like to see a movie delve deep into what causes terrorism in the first place. There are references to that topic here, but it's a topic that needs to get addressed in depth. No matter, the movie still features fine performances. I do hope that Noomi Rapace gets roles more like Lisbeth Salander, though.

As for Michael Apted, his best movies are the Up series, "Coal Miner's Daughter", "Gorillas in the Mist", "Thunderheart" and "Amazing Grace". I understand that his 1974 movie "Stardust" (about the rise and fall of a rock star) was also great, but unfortunately it's not available for home viewing.

Strictly one time watch - at home preferably

We saw some story to start off in the trailer of the movie, it had more twists than expected however the background score and narration was a let down as they failed to elevate the scenes at all. One can expect the twists in many occasions which is a shame as it was a decent script to start with. Lead actor Noomi Rapace acted well however her lack of expressions can be seen in some critical scenes of the movie also her voice was a let down in many places. Orlando Bloom did well with the limited time he was given with the character. Over All, a good plot was let down by some poor narration and bad background score ****Note: This is my personal opinion about the movie ********

The story is painfully generic but the action is actually pretty good

A CIA interrogator (Noomi Rapace) discovers that London is at risk of a biological bomb attack. She has dirty betraying colleagues as as well, so ass-kicking and shooting ensues. Also joining the ride: Toni Collette, Orlando Bloom, Michael Douglas, John Malkovich. I haven't seen her past Swedish work but Noomi Rapace's current popularity in American movies always perplexes me. She has this weirdly emotionless face and limited acting range – the more lines she has, the more unconvincing her performance becomes, as „Unlocked" indicates once again. This is one of the reasons why she's backed by heavyweights like Douglas and Malkovich here, who are probably just happy to try something lightweight and collect an easy paycheck while doing it. The other reason for including them without giving them something worthwhile to do is probably that having only Rapace and Bloom as „name" actors would not guarantee this mediocre actioneer even a wide release. The story is painfully generic but the action is actually pretty good. Not anything that you haven't seen before, but luckily it doesn't feel like a waste of 98 minutes either. Especially if you just love modern spy action thrillers or Rapace.

Formulaic, erratic actioner, but well produced

A British-American action thriller; A story about a CIA agent, demoted after a mistake she made led to lives being lost, who is called back into service in London but soon realises she and her operation have been compromised. Noomi Rapace seems well cast as a French-born interrogator, haunted by the mistakes of her past. But the story seems all too familiar, going over ground covered by many other previous films and TV mini-series of the time featuring security services, police, and government combining to route out a cabal or conspiracy. It's a middling thriller too, failing to build enough tension. Too many plot twists make it laborious.

Just another mediocre spy-thriller.

"Send a car for my wife and flowers. And by flowers, I mean whatever it takes to keep me off the couch tonight."

Take any "Jason Bourne" episode, mix it with lets say a "Mission Impossible" or recently "Stratton" and add a little bit of humor. As a result you'll get something similar as "Unlocked". So, it isn't exactly original. It's entertaining, but it's also an inextricable tangle of intrigues. At one point you're wondering who can be trusted and who can't be. The film fits in perfectly with today's news. Every few months there's a terrorist attack by some extremist organization in Europe. I just hope this film won't cause some crack-brained organizations to get bad ideas.

Maybe it's me, but at times I didn't have a clue what the people concerned were talking about. Apparently, your level of intelligence should be very high to be able to function in the world of intelligence services as a secret agent. Sometimes conclusions are drawn and decisions are made at such a scary rate. The fight against terrorism is a difficult task for a reason. Is it possible that the vast majority of employees can't even follow the reasoning of their superior?

Noomi Rapace, who impressed me more in "Child 44" than in "Prometheus", is playing the experienced agent Alice Racine, who has a conscience problem after a terrorist attack in Paris. Due to an enormous guilt-feeling she leaves her job at MI5. And now she works for a social service which she uses as a cover to signal suspicious developments to MI5. Until she's summoned one day to question a terrorist suspect to get information about a planned attack. But soon, she realizes she got caught up in a hornet's nest where nobody can be trusted and with an impossible task waiting for her. On the one hand, she has to make sure she stays out of the hands of another organization with an entirely different agenda. And on the other hand, it's a race against the clock to make sure London won't suffer a chemical attack. Yes, it isn't boring for Alice.

The story on its own is actually a mess and sometimes quite difficult to follow. If you are a spy-thriller enthusiast and you have already seen a lot of movies from this genre, you won't find novelties that'll overwhelm you. The whole movie is a series of chases, short-lived but energetic action scenes and high-tech espionage behind the scenes. But, above all, the huge amount of plot turns will make it rather laughable than surprising. I would not even have been surprised if at the end the imam was an accomplice of some kind of candid camera program who announces that it was all just a joke. That's the level I'm talking about.

What else is there to admire? The performances of acclaimed famous film stars? The Swedish Noomi Rapace is perfect for this part as the female Jason Bourne. An intelligent, cold-blooded person who knows how to handle herself in this hard-core spy world. They were even able to convince Michael Douglas to play a small but not so insignificant role. The least impressive role was given to Orlando Bloom, who tries to bring some humor into the film with his heavy English accent and attitude. However, it is John Malkovich who steals the show as CIA chief Bob Hunter. His facial expression, that seemingly nonchalant smile and a moment of uncontrolled behavior during a video conference. A clear proof that one needs to be a bit insane to work for the intelligence service. But despite the excellent acting and the stars who appear on the screen, this movie can't avoid to get the label "mediocrity". It's just another spy thriller which is momentary entertaining but eventually will be forgotten.

Watchable with some fun action sequences but the script/ plot is so cringeworthy at times and predictable it ruins the whole movie unfortunately.

Unlocked

Rapace is summoned at the last minute to interrogate a messenger who is a player in a biological attack on London. It is soon apparent that things are not what they seem and Rapace is soon on the run.

Straight, by the numbers terrorist thriller. Rapace is a solid and convincing lead dancing through various set pieces, Malkovich just does what he usually does and Bloom's part seem all rather pointless. It's all undemanding fun, but there are just too many twists and turns, all of which are easy to see through, to make it remotely believable. Pleasant enough.

If one were to see enough of these one can almost predict the entire movie

Alice (Noomi Rapace) is a counter terrorism expert for the UK pretending to be employed as part of immigration used as a front with Emily (Toni Colletti) as her current boss. As she used to do the exact same thing for her former boss Eric (Michael Douglas) head of CIA except that she is unable to forget about a previous incident that costed many lives, therefore, she is somewhat scarred and is unwilling to visit that moment. And although she still communicates with Eric it is only for advice since he did trained her. When one day, she is offered an interrogation gig involving a young student who is supposed to be recruited by a known radical.

Despite the huge cast such as John Malkovich and Orlando Bloom there's not a lot that happens in terms of the action sequences which is why I am giving the rating that I am giving it.

Dull and predictable 007/Bourne type movie

This movie could have worked great as it has amazing cast, good story, yet the movie becomes boring and predictable very quickly.

Film feels like a Jason Bourne sequel with female character. Cast is great although acting is not very good.

You're not missing anything great if you miss this one.
