Don't believe the reviews

I went to this movie after I was convinced by the reviews here. Unfortunately, this movie wasn't the twisty bloody fun described here. It wasn't that bad, either, but it was plain, predictable, and not very giving.

The acting was decent, though I think that not even Brad Pitt and Meryl Streep could have done something better out of those lines.

There wasn't anything slasher in it, no suspense, no comedy, it didn't excel in absolutely anything, not even depicting an incel, a subject that itself is very giving.

Though I really appreciate the effort put into it, I would say it's best to see it at home than to spend money at the movies for it.

What's going on

What in the world is going on?! As it currently stands this film has 7.5 on IMDb. Did I see the same movie as the rest of you? Or has ai bots taken over this site?

Companion is not good. It doesn't know what it wants to be. Its writing is cheesy and predictable. Performances are nothin to write home about! It plays with re-occurring themes that I feel I've seen in every other "ai" movie over the past decade, and it surely didn't feel creative enough to stand out in any way.

Dare I say even in terms of 'entertainment' factor it was lacking. At times I felt the film was droning on (which is a crazy thing to say about an hour and a half long thriller).

I saw it with my partner and she had more of an entertaining time... because she didn't watch the trailer. It's a shame that trailers these days dont just sell you on buying a movie ticket but they reveal every twist and turn about the film. Too much was revealed there, where I knew exactly where it was going to end up. No surprises if you've dared to look at the movie poster.

MAYBE this movie would be more entertaining if you walked in blind, but even then you would have to ignore the poor writing and cheesy performances.

nothing but predicteble

How on earth there is nothing original about this movie but people still think it is fresh? I mean it is easy to watch when you are looking for something while you eat or ready to sleep but beside that its too cliche.

I have no idea why the rating is this high for the movie. I was hoping for something else. It is so unoriginal that it could easily be filmed 30 years ago and even the technology to shot the movie would be enough.

Very predictable, very easy, felt like a very old movie. I must say it was a disappointment and I really don't understand other reviews. Either people are very young and never seen another movie before or they are just part of the movie crew. Or else it doesn't make sense why people are loving this movie.

okay

Companion has a promising thriller idea that is let down by a predictable and unoriginal script. It has a smart set up and I appreciated that it has 2 additional twists (since they give away the initial one in all the trailers and promo material). But as it carries on past the 20 minute mark it becomes obvious it's weak plot is riddled with contrivances and unbelievable turns. It sets up rules only to bend them or outright break them later. The character motivations feel hackneyed and Jack Quaid's turn as a mustache twirling incel near the end feels like peak 2025 writing - in the worst possible way.

Characters make bizarre choices, and the romantic parts of it fall completely flat - making the human characters feel sloppy and stupid. A lot of the plot relies on characters making very stupid decisions. The comedy doesn't fair much better - with most of the writing feeling lazy and unamusing. (The Russian guy loves Stalin! Also he's cheating on his wife so he deserves to die, LOL!!!)

It also doesn't have anything new to say on the sci-fi front. Sacrificing time that could have been spent on interesting thoughts on AI and humanity for weak jokes and a predictable incel villain monologuing - Hollywood's newest obsession.

The performances are fine - Sophie Thatcher makes the most of her role and you do grow to like her and root for her. Jack Quaid is fine - but he's playing a one-dimensional character that's grown increasingly prevalent in modern film and is never very interesting in any form. The rest of the cast is serviceable but unmemorable. Probably the police officer who's there for one scene is actually the funniest, which is pretty bad for a "dark comedy."

The film overall reminds me a lot of Barbarian. It has a clever set up, and even some small moments of great filmmaking. But outstays it's welcome, has lazy and unbelievable writing, and also weirdly veers into strange politically oriented trends.

Companion

A film that lacked intrigue.

This film was a disappointing watch, although the second half was much better than the first it still couldn't lift the movie out of the average film category. The film itself had an interesting plot and storyline, its unique and memorable however the way it was portrayed really dragged the film down. The first half of the film was just a boring beginning with a strange start to the plot, however the second half is when the characters emotions really bloomed, they had a sense in the story, a meaning. The film symbolises control, how people take advantage of others for their own personal gain, only keeping themselves in the frame ignoring others. It's a movie about greed and selfishness but concentrated more on making money than providing a quality film. Overall a mediocre film .

Trailer spoils it!!!!!!!!!!

Although it's an ok movie if you're not quite deep into the horror genre, it's mostly a funny attempt at a plot that's been done over and over.

And yeah.. the trailer ruined the whole thing tbh.

Shame because otherwise I would have been able to put some pieces together myself and at least I would've had the element of surprise during the plot development.

So why this gets a 7,4 rating and Joker part deux never reached even a 6 is beyond me, but since I had a free pass for this one it was a good enough pass time for an evening.

Won't be recommending this to a lot of people tho... sorry not sorry.

Was presented as Horror - NOT A CHANCE

The storyline was not too bad, but everything was predictable towards the end of the film! The concept made sense of the film but definitely not something you would watch again.

It felt like a poorly made Netflix film one of those that you think is good but is actually not worth the time to watch.

The concept of AI and how robots could be used was scary but I think it's obvious what happens if you have robots that malfunctioning can happen and can lead to all sorts of mess.

There was a few laughs and gore scenes in here but nothing to go like I was absolutely scared of the film or anything to make your heart race.

I know... I'm going against the tide here, but, I will do my best to give you the reasons why...

Okay... I've reviewed probably well over 300 movies here over the last 15 years or so, and generally I do not add a review when there are already so many here.

BUT... the reason why I am adding a brief review amidst these 300+ already, and in reading them I see that some others do indeed agree with me, for those who may feel like I do about movies like this I think it may be helpful to share how this movie struck me personally.

Straight out, right from the start, the overly 'Hip' tone put me off. Unless a film is done REALLY well and cleverly written/acted/directed, I usually do not care for movies that are kinda 'Cute' in the sense that they are in effect saying, 'Hey look how cool and hip we are', especially with the dialog that was being exchanged between all those 'Hip', 'Cool' very unrealistic people.

It just is not my thing, really. I understand if others, which many here are, into that kind of style, almost self-referential, then fine you may really like it. To me personally although I honestly do love a wide variety of styles in movies, and yes, they can be light hearted, don't always have to be serious or 'Heavy' But, the way that the style in which this movie was written and directed mainly just comes across as very Plastic and unbelievable.

In a case like this, I don't feel that it is the actors fault, because they simply follow the tone and direction of what they are given so they are not the ones who carry the ultimate responsibility for the way they come across. The style presented here just comes across to me as VERY artificial, superficial, and makes it very difficult really to 'Get Into' the story at all.

Heh, sorry to get real wordy, I guess this review is not really going to be 'Brief' after all, my apologies... : )

But, yeah, that's pretty much it. Probably the worst culprits to me as an actual film as far as it being truly engaging in any way or drawing the audience into the story at all, would be the writing and direction. If perhaps the same story could have been told in a more realistic or truly clever way, then sure the story may well have been very good. But, to me, honestly, I just didn't get the impression that the writing was very sharp or believable at all. And yes, I agree with many here that the introduction in just the first few minutes basically shows it's hand in what the tone of the film will be when she says what she does in just the first few sentences.

So, basically that's it. And, I don't know if that may indeed be very helpful to some others here. But, honestly, I would say for people who really get into movies where they are intelligently written, and NOT insulting the intelligence of the audience, and who appreciate films that give some depth and substance to their characters and especially their dialog with each other, then like me you may very well find this film somewhat lacking.

Superficial, not very well or cleverly written, characters poorly come across as real people at all and are FAR too busy trying to be 'Hip' and 'Cool' to relate to in any realistic way.

Sorry about that, but with all the very positive reviews I felt I really should throw in here my honest impressions as to the way the movie struck me.

I gave it a '5' because it is not Gawd-Awful, but very shallow and unsatisfying.

I hope that helps...

The way I rate movies on 'My' curve : )

5 - Flawed, Not really recommended 6 - Passable, Worth a watch, not highly recommended 7 - A Solid, Entertaining Film.

Not worthy of 7,1

7.1, come on 😂 I already feel ridiculous that this is the fifth time I have to bash the film and criticize its rating, which makes no sense. Oh, one of the films featuring the over-talented Sophie Thatcher. I hope that Sophie Thatcher and her talent will soon be showcased in a movie truly worthy of her abilities, instead of wasting her skills on these half-assed films. The film isn't exactly the worst I've ever seen, but it definitely doesn't deserve a 7.1-come on. Maybe a 5.

The movie is watchable if you just want to kill time on a Saturday night. Overall, the film is cool. It has a great cast but a cheap, hole-riddled plot. I mean, in today's world we use phones over which the companies that sell them have absolute control, yet in this film they show human-like robots over which the company has no control. Seriously-any working consumer should be able to hack a company's robot without the company being able to remotely shut it down. And don't even get me started on the lack of a live feed from their perspective. Nowadays, intelligence agencies eavesdrop through phones, let alone through robots.

We learn nothing about the characters-they're very poorly developed, lacking any real personality or background.

If West World sn 1 took place in a house and wasn't very good

Very glad I waited to see this as it was pretty disappointing. I'm a fan of the two leads but there was just nothing new here. I kept hoping it would find the next gear and offer some surprises, but right to the end, if was a flat as could be.

Overall, painfully average, from the script to the direction, even the actors at times looked like they weren't having much fun. This could have been much more entertaining given the plot and the talent of the actors, but just couldn't get there. It wasn't for me, but if you like to keep it simple, like a an extended black mirror episode but less thinking, maybe this is for you.

ONE MORE

A film with a very absurd and sometimes even repetitive story, it lacks a good and compelling structure. It's not a terrible film, but it can still be very tedious and boring, and it's hard to watch it all the way through. What saves this film is the great acting of its cast. They make you feel like they're the characters, conveying that madness, fear, love, and rejection. They're great at reaching and understanding their characters. Unfortunately, the script didn't support them.

Conclusion: Watch it if you have nothing to watch, and don't have high expectations. It's worth seeing simply for the great acting work in each character. The story is passable, and it's a film you can finish. However, there will be moments when you'll be bored, as there's no moment that captures the viewer's attention.

Rating: 5/10.

Companion- less.

Companion starts off well enough and its main surprise is revealed about 20 mins in. There are a few other plot developments/ turns after this. The movie is kind of a romance- sc fi crime meshed with a bit of humour. The main ' character' is played well by Sophie Thatcher. The rest of the cast (Quaid etc) are serviceable. There's a lot here that doesn't really gel and the plot is a bit messy. Nevertheless there is a bit of tension, gore and the movie does move along albeit without much coherency. It tries to make some statements about AI and humanity but doesn't really resonate. Worth one watch.

Did Treyarch branch out into directing thrillers?

Of course not. This is another A24 film, which has their typical set of strengths - i.e. Bright, crisp cinematography, LGBT friendliness- and weaknesses - too-cute-by-half-soundtrack choices and an aggravating script which mistakes the ability to invent a handful of neat gimmicks for good writing.

Case in point: it's one of those works which reveals a key character's impending death to us (but not to the cast) at the very start. Thing is, once you know "what" is going to happen, "HOW" it happens needs to be interesting. Such a move can work very well - consider the long and storied run of Columbo. At its best, this move builds up tension during said character's scenes, focusing on a dramatic irony between their obliviousness and our knowledge - particularly when it involves them making plans we know they'll never get to finish, or doing seemingly reasonable things which bring them closer to their downfall.

Hence, it's a MASSIVE problem when that character is so annoying, you actively wish for him to die LONG before the ending. I don't entirely understand why he didn't get shot around the halfway mark - and I think the film would have been aggressively improved if he actually did die then and there. He is SO devoid of any redeeming characteristics you wonder how he ended up where he is in the first place, and why any of the much cooler supporting characters bother to associate with him.

Admittedly, being cooler than that waste of space is a very low bar. Not counting our titular Companion (who is well-played by Sophie Thatcher), the rest of the cast is rather hit-or-miss. The gay couple's subplot is by turns amusing and eerie - up until its conclusion, which is rather all-too-convenient for the main character and seems to make no sense in-universe. Yet, this is still miles ahead of the Russian oligarch WITH STALIN'S BIRTHDAY PASSWORDS - a cliche every bit as trite and pathetic as Emilia Perez's "Mexicans smell of guacamole" song. It's a move LITERALLY out of COD playbook (Black Ops: Cold War, if you are interested). I certainly never expected to see an acclaimed thriller stoop so low as to emulate Treyarch, but I guess 2025 is dark and full of terrors.

The biggest redeeming factor here is how the script plays around Companion's programmed abilities and limitations. While still far more human-like than these silicon "minds" might ever get (in contrast to 2024's Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, which approached a comparable premise from the far more justifiable angle they won't ever get far beyond ChatGPT and thinking otherwise is foolish) watching her struggle against the hardcoded inability to lie, or seeing fundamental aspects like intelligence subject to a mere slider provides for a number of pretty good scenes.

Ultimately, the premise of such a Companion deserved to be in a far better movie - one where the central crime plot doesn't break down utterly as soon as you think about it even if everything went "right", for starters. As it is, it can amuse and infuriate in equal measure, and is altogether very much missable.

Not sure how this movie got such high ratings

Scrolling through the reviews I'm surprised nobody mentioned it's a "M3ghan" wannabe or copycat.

The plot is completely predictable after the human looking bots are revealed as bots. And it's hardly a horror, nothing scary at all. Men nerds who are into computer and tech stuff love this movie cuz it's all about bots. If you're a woman horror fan I guarantee you'll turn the movie off 30 mins into it. Or as soon as the main bot character has been revealed as a bot.

If you're having nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon and aren't expecting much then yeh watch it. But if you're looking to enjoy an evening with some real horror excitement then nah don't choose this.

Good but bad

While the film's core premise, a world intricately designed around advanced robotics, initially captivates the imagination, its execution stumbles significantly when it attempts to weave in the human element. The truly fascinating robotic society, with its complex mechanics and intriguing possibilities, is consistently overshadowed by a baffling array of human decisions that defy logic and ultimately undermine the narrative's credibility.

Instead of developing nuanced characters whose choices feel organic and understandable within the established world, the script frequently opts for contrived dramatic scenarios. These choices, often illogical and self-sabotaging, sacrifice any sense of believability for cheap thrills, leaving the audience scratching their heads rather than genuinely invested. This results in a profound and frustrating disconnect between the viewer and the on-screen events. Moments that are clearly intended to be poignant, emotionally resonant, or even thrilling are instead rendered frustratingly hollow by the characters' baffling actions and a pervasive sense of dramatic manipulation. The nadir of this comes with lines such as, "Any last words?", a cliché that perfectly encapsulates the film's reliance on superficial drama over genuine character development and believable stakes.
