Vermines

Arachnophobes, stay very far away from this film!

Shall I start off with a straightforward and attention-grabbing statement? "Vermines" is, hands down, the best and most terrifying horror movie about spiders ever made! Adequate and reasonably uncanny films like "Kingdom of the Spiders", "Tarantula: The Deadly Cargo", and "Arachnophobia" built up a cult-reputation over the years, but if there's any justice left in this godforsaken world, it will soon be "Vermines" that is on the top-position of every "best spider horror" list. Yes, it truly is that good!

Hard to believe this is only co-writer/director Sébastien Vanicek fist long-feature film. He does everything right! "Vermines" is chock-full of subtle but clever and respectable references to great horror classics ("Braindead", "Alien", "Predator"), and the tenacious scenario masterly illustrates the racial and social tensions that have plagued France - and especially Paris - for several years now. The film is also 200% authentic. I'm not sure if it's in Paris, or if the building really exists, but it does accurately reflect the typically French banlieue with all its ethnic diversity, poor housing conditions, and enmity towards the police. The residents of the tenement are credible, too. I speak fluent French, but without the English subtitles I hadn't been able to follow how these youngsters talk. And although I'm not a big fan of French "gangster-rap", it's the only suitable soundtrack for a setting like this.

But most of all, "Vermines" is finally a mature and genuinely horrifying film about the animal, par excellence, that a large part of the population fears! If you're an arachnophobe you should stay miles away from this film, and even if you are not afraid of spiders, you're still guaranteed to cringe in your seat upon witnessing numerous moments throughout this movie.

Kaleb is an outsider, even in his secluded apartment block community. He tries making some money by illegally selling sneakers, but his true passion is taking care of his rare exotic insects and amphibians. He's lucky to add a unique spider to his collection, but during the opening credits we already witnessed how it concerns an ultra-aggressive and poisonous desert species. The spider is also pregnant, and when it escapes it doesn't take long before the apartment block is infested with rapidly procreating and non-stop evolving arachnids.

The intense and petrifying highlights in "Vermines" are too numerous to list. You feel the fear of Kaleb's sister Manon when she's trapped in the bathroom with the spider. You gaze in agony when the group must walk across a hallway blocked with cobwebs. You suffer along with the protagonists when baby spiders crawl out of the mouth of yet another deceased neighbor, etc. The special effects are sublime, so that even the largest spiders come across as realistic and terrifying. In case it wasn't clear just yet: "Vermines" is fantastic horror, and recommended to people with nerves of steel.

So fun and thrilling!

First I'd like to say that I absolutely loved this movie and went to see it twice in theaters! Such a fun horror-type movie that anybody can enjoy, especially people who aren't super into scary films. I'm terrified of spiders and had no issues watching Vermines, I think you can still love the film even though you're an arachnophobe!

As a French person, I'm not used to seeing French movies with such impeccable dialogue written for young characters. The slang used by these characters is actually a great representation of how a LOT of French people talk, and this film is one of the few that portrays this type of slang perfectly!! It felt so real.

The message of Vermines is also pretty straightforward: it's a social commentary. The story is set in a "cité" on the outskirts of Paris, where police brutality is rampant, so of course the "vermins" of the movie actually turn out to be the people living in these poor neighborhoods. They are completely dehumanized and brutalized by police.

The characters are also so loveable, and the dynamics between each of them are very well constructed.

I really enjoyed the comedy in this film, it always felt right and was never overdone.

I highly recommend watching Vermines, whether you like scary movies or not!

Spiders Man

No pun intended - or to make another pun for German speakers: I think I spider! It's a saying that means more or less, that ones mind is blown. And watching this movie, this is quite apt! If you have issues with spiders - maybe you should not watch this movie! And while the movie was shown at the Fantasy Filmfest (as closing film), the movie told us they are still working on the effects.

That said, it also played at another Festival before - and it does look quite good already! I assume some smaller changes will be made or some digital work refined or something along those lines. The movie is really well done and the group of people we follow is ... quite sympathetic. Until the end that is - where certain things are being done and said .. that I do not completely agree with. No matter the circumstances ... but it seems a "French" thing and something of a "Revolution".

There are nods to many other horror movies (the beginning having quite the "Braindead" vibes - the Peter Jackson one, which also had a different title in the US I believe), then you get Alien, REC and so many more ... I reckon you can do a guessing game! Very well shot and quite a few shocking moments - in a good sense.

Phenomenal and terrifying

I'm not even afraid of spiders. I actually like them quite a bit, and I keep a few as pets. I'm also not scared by most horror movies But man, this movie really knows how to build suspense.

The tight, dingy apartment was a great setting for this kind of flick. The characters felt believable and fleshed out; I was invested in their survival. The spiders themselves are well designed, consistent, and serve as really good antagonists.

This reminded me of the film Rec quite a bit, if the zombies were replaced with arachnids. The cinematography, lighting, and acting all worked together to create a terrifying, skin-crawling movie. Great job.

The scariest spider movie

For years I've been calling Arachnophobia the scariest spider movie out there. No more. Infested sets a whole new standard of terror. I can't say how effective it will be for non-arachnophobes, but for those of us freaked out by those perfectly evolved little beauties this film is horrifying. There's a bathroom scene with painful levels of suspense and later a stairwell chase scene that is almost unbearably intense.

The characters are generally likable, there is the occasional silly decision but there is also the odd admirable one. The drama is very morose, maybe a little too so for its own good. There are one or two particularly harrowing moments that while effective, do take the fun away from the horror. Luckily the final act ends up comparable to Eight-Legged-Freaks leaving a much more pleasant taste, despite softening the terror.

Highly recommended to any and all fans of spider horror movies.

Creepy and funny

A big surprise. It seems like this film would be another generic film about disgusting and scary animals, but it is more than that! It's a well-made, genuinely scary and entertaining film.

The characters are varied and interesting to follow, the spiders here are really scary and monstrous, especially from the second act of the film onwards, and not everyone is stupid! Despite the mistakes that led to what happens in the building, most of the characters act correctly according to a common intelligence, and that's a very good thing.

There are terrifying scenes here of chases and people trapped with few options. It's so worth it! I haven't seen a spider movie this good since Eight Legged Freaks. It is worth it.

It doesn't have many negative points. Maybe just a lack of explanation about the extraordinary growth of the spiders, and because they didn't show the situation of some small town near that desert where the spiders were found, since there were probably several of them wandering around! Some city may be in trouble with an epidemic of giant spiders.

Spiders On Steroids

Oh, the French! Only they could brew up a concoction as delightfully disturbing as "Infested." Imagine a lonely soon-to-be 30-year-old named Kaleb, who instead of throwing a birthday bash, decides to gift himself an exotic spider. That's right, because who needs friends when you have deadly arachnids as party crashers?

Kaleb's life is already a tangled web of sibling squabbles over inheritance and a best friend he's ghosted, but it turns out spiders are where he draws the line in the friendship sand. Now, he's accidentally unleashed these eight-legged freaks in his less-than-glamorous suburb, turning it into an Airbnb hotspot for arachnid aficionados. These aren't your garden-variety spiders, though. No, no. These critters could give Shelob a run for her money in size and scare factor.

As the government slaps a quarantine on this spider-infested slum, the residents must adapt to a new pecking order-humans below, spiders on top. The French are never shy about mixing violence with visceral visuals, and "Infested" spins this into a whole new level of eek! The spiders, growing ever more monstrous, are not just climbing the walls-they are the walls!

The acting? Fantastique! It's as if everyone truly believes they might be gobbled up by giant spiders at any moment (method acting at its peak?). And the special effects? Let's just say, you'll double-check your bedroom corners for weeks. The spiders are so lifelike, you'll swear they're part of the cast-maybe even holding equity cards.

"Infested" refreshes the horror genre by proving that sometimes, the most horrifying monsters are the ones you accidentally bring home. It's a wild ride through terror-town with a social commentary sharp enough to cut through spider silk.

So, if you're in the mood to scream at something other than your own existential dread as you near the big 3-0, give "Infested" a watch. It's a hairy, scary, extraordinary spider spectacle that will make you think twice before adopting exotic pets-or at least encourage you to invest in better cages!

Bringing spiders back to the forefront

Infested and Sting have reclaimed the throne for spider films with a one two punch.

While Sting has a little bit of Sci Fi - Comedy - Horror going for it. The spider is cool, and while might be an alien, never stops mimicing a spider along the way. Taking on the look of a Black Widow or similar in shape, we know it's going to be nasty from the get go. But hey, it starts out cute.

So...with Infested, and yes, it's in French. You are going to need subtitles. Deal with it. We get handed the truth about our spider and how nasty it is in the opening scene. There is no cute stage. It is full on, "huntsman spider" looking, fast moving, fast and painful death dealing OOOOHHHHHHHH crap on 8 legs.

But exotic smugglers need to make their money.

If it's NASTY and shouldn't be owned by ANYONE, it's wanted on the black market.

Our main character already has a few examples of such illegal exotics in his bedroom of terrariums, that we get a better tour of as time progresses. His sister isn't impressed by his hobby.

He gets one of these nasty spiders while buying a gift for a neighbor. I mean. Where else can you shop for gold earrings, weed, imported bugs, and more...all in one place? It's the One Stop Pawn Shop Extravaganza.

Dude takes it home and puts it in an old shoe box. I don't even think he paid for it. I think he 5 finger discounted it.

Shame... We know where this goes.

I won't provide spoilers, that you have not seen in advertising.

You gotta watch the film for yourself.

The last time there was this much...just...they are everywhere, was Arachnophobia. And then if you have seen The Mist, when they go into the pharmacy?

I removed a star for act 3, the concept of using guns in a spider situation is the dumbest thing ever. Never bring a gun to a spider battle. Flamethrower all the way.

If you have problems with spiders.

Turn around.

Run.
