Ugly

Redeemed at the end

'Ugly' is redeemed by its last moments - indeed, by the closing scene and the last words spoken in the film; ironically, by one of the most peripheral characters. Those words, however, convey the entire philosophy of the movie, and underscore what none of the other, principal dramatis personae ever chooses to understand, viz., that life is much much more than personal prejudices and misplaced rivalries.

'Ugly' is touted as a thriller. That, it is not. I don't think it was ever intended to be a thriller, per se, either, as was, for example, Sriram Raghavan's criminally underrated 'Johnny Gaddar'. The thrill factor in 'Ugly', assuming it exists, is not even remotely close.

Which brings me to another unique feature of 'Ugly' - which probably explains the name. The film is entirely free of even a single likable character. From Tejaswini Kolhapure's impressively acted Shalini, as the mother of a 10-year old girl who goes missing, and whose disappearance forms the backdrop of the entire story, to her dour and taciturn husband Shoumik Bose (again impressively, albeit a tad one-dimensionally, portrayed by Ronit Roy), to her ex-husband and father of the missing girl, Rahul (Rahul Bhat), to his wily friend Chaitanya (Vineet Kumar Singh), to the mercurial police inspector Jadhav (superbly portrayed by Girish Kulkarni, a highly regarded performer in Marathi cinema), they are all inherently repulsive characters, one way or the other. We cannot empathise with a single one of them; indeed, Anurag deliberately provokes the audience's disgust in seeing these people, supposedly literate and seeking to search for an innocent 10-year old (an utterly adorable Anishika Shrivastava) who has mysteriously disappeared from her car, concerned more with their own squabbles and subterfuges than with tracing the girl as expeditiously as possible. Which is why, as I said, the entire philosophy of the film has been condensed, by Anurag, into the last 5 words spoken in it, which remain etched in the memory much after the end credits have rolled by, and have to regarded as the movie's apotheosis.

'Ugly' is, therefore, uncompromising - if not really uncomfortable - viewing. It would, in any rate, deserve to rate fairly high, in Anurag Kashyap's enviable oeuvre.

Redeemed, I repeat, by its last 5 minutes.

Great actors, great direction but still some scenes are inspired by Korean movie-Voice of Murderer

The actors have played their role 10 on scale of 10. Great direction and great twists. The movie has at least 3 4 scenes and even the end- that is inspired from the movie Voice of Murderer. Suspense could have been more twisted, if they have unleashed in the end instead of showing in between.

The movie showed uncharacteristic sight of mother, that's first time I ever seen in any kidnapping movie. Mothers are the always the most concerned when child get kidnapped. Hope we will get other great movies like this.

Overall i would say its great direction by Anurag Kashyap and I recommend to any one who likes crime and thriller genre.

Welcome to the Ugliness of the Human Soul

Reviewed by: Dare Devil Kid (DDK)

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Yet another highly recommended movie from the highly creative mind and dexterous guidance of Anurag Kashyap. His direction and script are, as usual, spot-on, and instantaneously draw us into a terrible tale of corruption, indifference, and systemic violence that starts when the ten year old daughter of an aspiring actor disappears.

Elevating the film further are the measured performances by Rahul Bhat, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Singh, and above all Ronit Roy, who completely steals the show in every frame he's in. Though the film falls somewhat short of Kashyap's erstwhile masterpieces such as "Gangs of Wasseypur", "Dev D", "Gulaal", and "Paanch" – there are moments when the tension eases and the narrative loosens its grip for a few unnecessary, artsy allegories - it's still an extremely gripping thriller that will leave you in perennial anticipation of what comes next.

Nikos Andritsakis' cinematography also aides the script to a huge extent by capturing the gritty underbelly and moldy by-lanes of Mumbai, and the slow-burn tone of proceedings is exactly what was needed for the layered drama to unfold its unexpected twists and turns. However, the film's sound mixing leaves a lot to be desired and is a huge letdown, especially since it drowns out important dialogues at times. Nevertheless, Kashyap's latest offering is one helluva ugly tale with dark, ugly characters who have ugly motives fueled by uglier morals, which eerily serve as a grim reflection of our own societal state.

Senseless end kills the film

Brutal ending tells the psych of A.K. End of the film remains in the mind for a long time after watching the film. It is so ugly that I couldn't stop myself from starting the review with the end first.

No matter what you are trying to convey the message, the ending should be handled with care.

Film is hard hitting and while watching AK's films you constantly feel the znnnnnnnzzzzznnnnnnn......... a current running in your body. All characters are ugly, and can fall to lower levels without any thought. This world is not so good, and has both good and ugly sides to it. One needs to be aware of evils in our society. Parents need to take good care of their child or it can be too late. Never leave your child alone, never ever, neither in home nor in market or otherwise.

Movie comes with some very important messages. First : Never marry unless you have a consistent source of income, Second : Never grow your family unless you have a decent bank balance, Third : Never leave your kids alone and give them enough balanced knowledge about how to protect themselves, Fourth : If anyhow you have grown your family, then stop experimenting with life and settle down at any cost.

Ronit Roy is terrific and is one of those many under-rated actors. Hopefully this movie will bring more good roles to him.

Thriller quotient is very high and keeps you edge of the seat all through. Right before start of the movie you start feeling goose bumps. Dub this movie in English, and you have a Hollywood pot boiler.

Inspector who supports Ronit Roy is terrific. Humor is limited and up-to the mark, and actually makes you laugh.

Watch only if you can handle ugliness for more than 2 hours. And leave the theater before the end. You will come to know when you will reach the end.

My only appeal to AK : Always keep endings happy !
