Strong start, then straight down

Went in blind to this show as I saw it on Channel 4s streaming service. Looked like fun and it has a first rate cast of top actors. The first episode sets things up nicely and since it is a short series I decided to give it a watch. I thought, unlike some reviews, the acting was pretty good but that comes with a caveat. The story line is ludicrious which is should be a a zombie series, but its neither serious enough or funny enough to be fully entertaining. By halfway through the series I was getting restless, storylines were unravelling and characters seemed to suddenly change attitudes for no reason. I stuck with it to the end, so you don't have to. It get 4 because of the start, its a 2 by the end.

Chewing the scenery...

There's a throwaway comment on the movie industry; they sometimes call extras 'moving scenery'. Here, they're the scenery that gets chewed by many of the cast.

This is such a hodge podge. Occasional scenes are ghoulishly funny, riffing on the cliches about 'older people' and the younger crowd; and, of course, the many tropes abounding after 60+ years of mainstream zombie films.

The third agers- Anita Dobson, Sue Johnston leading - have the, erm, 'meatiest' roles here; plenty to get their teeth into! Others, including Robert Lindsay and Michael Smiley, are good but initially peripheral.

There are many scenes that some might prefer to 'unsee'; there is a taste (!) of the 1960s Hammer horror classics that goes way beyond what was possible then.

Where it falls apart is the multiplicity of characters, generations and their stories. It needs three generations; school age, pensioners and that 'squeezed middle'. There ends up being such a muddle of characters, quite diverse, so that by the time you've worked out who is related to whom, they're toast; with lots of extra strawberry jam.

One final problem for the school agers; some decent acting here, but a couple are still in sixth form aged 28 and 26, and there's no acting around that fact.

Tedious tripe

With all of the horror writing and production talent in the UK I would think Channel 4 could have come up with something interesting - reasonably interesting at least.

But this is one of the most boring 'horror' TV series I have ever seen. It is the standard 'zombie' story - but tedious - so tedious I was glad when it was over.

The only thing that makes it anywhere near more watchable than a washing machine are the talented actors - who seem to be trying to do the best they can with very little to work with. After all they can only work with the story and direction they are given.

Really - don't waste your time with this nonsense.

Ok start and goes downhill

The first episode was ok and we thought perhaps it's building to something. Unfortunately it doesn't.

The story just gets worse, some of the acting is awful and it's such a shame as the talent available on screen are some of Britains finest, Sue Johnston, Robert Lindsay, Michael Smiley to name a few are all incredible when they have the material to work with. However they're given such unbelievable scripts that it's laughable.

This could have been a great British tv series but it just feels like they creators were given a day to write it, a day to film it and a day to put it together. Shame.

How did this get made?

Channel 4 clearly will just do anything for a Ben Wheatley commission. Not only that, but what a cast he's managed to assemble.

Don't be fooled by the Big name writer/director or the assembled usually pretty great cast, this site is absolute tripe.

It looks cheap. It feels cheaper. There isn't a single character that you could give a toss about. The script chops and changes so frequently and incorrectly as to give whiplash, and each time it does so you get an accompanying 'place name, X no miles away from the chemical spillage' typewriter effect on the screen. This happens at least 10 times in the first five minutes. It's very very annoying.

The cast have nothing to do. There's no fun in it (admittedly I only watched the first episode, I couldn't bare to watch another second) which is the really shocking thing.

It's not fun. It's not scary. It didn't have anything new to say. It's just absolutely terrible.

Disappointing

This show sounded right up my street and I couldn't wait to watch. 3 episodes in and I've given up. The younger characters are mostly just really annoying and unsympathetic. I thought the acting standard was pretty poor. Same goes for the 'boomers' some great acting talent there and yet not one good performance. The 'Gen Xers' were slightly more likable but came across as weak and a bit useless.

Any attempt to satirise the issues they were attempting to raise was destroyed by the talking zombies. A decent program wouldn't need all the explaining that was going on.

It lacked tension and humour and the stereotyping was lazy and lacked subtlety. What a shame as this has so much potential.

It does get better (watched it all)

Been looking forwards to this since it was announced and after the first episode I was ready to chuck in the towel. The acting was weirdly over the top, the effects were from Poundland, the script was awful and the constant graphics of the current ___location were really annoying. However I decided to at least watch episode 2 to give it a chance and it got so much better. The character of Flynn and her relationship with Morgan and Steff really saves the show and this is where the comedy occurs. So far we have made it to episode 4 and will carry on watching. It does have its flaws and the first episode is truly awful but if you can make it through that I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Not what I was expecting but so glad it improved.

Edit- now have watched it all and the last 2 episodes were actually quite fun and bonkers. Is the show any good? No, it's awful Would I ever watch it again? No, it's awful Why did I watch all the episodes? No idea, it's awful.

Is it so awful that's it's good? I think so, but definitely not intentionally. Hence I have changed my review from a 7 to a 6.

It's a poor series.

A truck carrying a chemical load in the village of Dambury spills its load, an accident that transforms the residents of a nursing home into flesh eating zombies.

It just doesn't work overall, there are some really nice, original ideas at play, the trouble is that it's just not very good.

It's not gory enough to be a horror, not funny enough to be a comedy, it tries to make several points about present day politics, but it just ends up being irritating.

On the plus side, I love the ideas of zombies that can reason, flesh eating monsters with a conscience, and I liked the idea of a hierarchy and a power struggle.

Sadly the woes outweigh the positives, sometimes it feels like scooby doo, it's almost adolescent. The special effects could have come from 1997, the editing is horrific, and you're asked to believe that adults are school children. It does also get preachy at times.

It features an awesome cast, one that really appealed to me, Sue Johnston, Robert Lindsay, Anita Dobson and more, all you can say is that a good job was done pitching the idea of this to them.

Channel 4 I have to ask, what on Earth is going on with your drama content, what has gone so badly wrong?

Highly unlikely that series two will follow.

Some glorious nonsense!

Very enjoyable, low rent, pretty bonkers, zombie apocalyptic nonsense.

There are scenes in this series that are so unbelievably laugh out loud hilarious that it's impossible not to like this.

Yes it's a big hot mess, with way too many side stories going on, and some pretty heavy hints at some deeply embedded culture wars stuff, but it's still a heap of fun.

I think you'll need to be British to really appreciate Ang and Sheila going at it! I certainly did!

As a Gen X I find it doubly amusing that we pretty much escape any blame and are also portrayed as pretty feckless. Long live us shirkers who have never contributed anything!

Overall, it could have done with being a bit tidier narrative and time wise. It was still a lot of fun though.

Talking zombies are the way forward!

Disappointingly poor

Think I could've made a better zombie series on £10 and a tube of fake blood. A whole £5 less than this lot did it for. Every character is absolutely infuriating, the acting is bad, the writing is worse. It's half shot like a found-footage film half like a drama, so inconsistent and annoying.

I'm gen Z and I generally agree with the social commentary message the director and writers are trying to push but it's incredibly heavy handed and will likely just worsen divides between generations.

The ads claimed this is a comedy-horror. But there's a huge lack of both sides. It's like an even worse coronation street Halloween special or something.

Gotta be honest, this is all based on half of episode one so can't really comment on the whole story as there's no chance I'm watching any more of it.

Enough wit to keep me in, but only just

I personally liked the concept of super-charged OAPs taking their revenge. There are some great performances from classic British actors to enjoy, and some of the young talent is impressive, too (Viola Prettejohn and Buket Komur, in particular). Ben Wheatley writes dialogue pretty well, I think; it smacks of wry realism. This can work beautifully with his flights hyper-realism, at times, but I find he can often go overboard with the latter. A soap-like Zombie series would seem like the perfect TV try-out for him but, for me, he is over-indulged here.

It's just too ambitious: There are some political issues that could have been thought-provoking but end up heavy-handed. The Who Is (Other Than The Tories) Really To Blame? / Is Anyone (Other Than The Tories) Truly Evil? Ideologies gets scattered around willy-nilly until you end up having little sympathy for anybody, and stop caring. I found most of the comedy landed but, then, there's too much drama splattered in every direction. I pity the content writers who have to produce a recap of each episode.

Somewhat most ridiculously, it's left open for a second series, which really would be an embarrassment, but if you fancy a bolshy, gory, occasionally very well-observed adventure to accompany your doom-scrolling, you could do a lot worse.

this series is such a waste of time that I ended up binge-watching paint dry instead-at least the paint had some character development!

You know, I recently decided to dive into this new series everyone was raving about. I thought, "Why not? It's got high ratings and all the buzz." So I settled in, armed with snacks and a cozy blanket, ready for an adventure. Little did I know that this series would be such a colossal waste of time that I found myself binge-watching paint dry instead. Yes, you heard me right-paint drying!

Now, before you start questioning my sanity, let me explain. It all began with the opening scene. I was intrigued. Beautiful cinematography, promising characters, and a captivating score. I thought, "This could be something special!" But then, as the episode dragged on, it became painfully clear that the plot was as thick as molasses and moving at a snail's pace. I mean, I've seen more action in a game of chess.

I tried to give the characters a chance. They seemed interesting at first-mysterious backstories, quirky personalities-but as the episodes piled up, I realized they were about as dynamic as a brick wall. I found myself thinking, "This guy's backstory is so predictable; I could probably write a better one while waiting for my toast to pop!" And don't even get me started on the dialogue. It was so wooden that I was half-expecting the actors to start creaking like an old door.

In a moment of desperation, I glanced over at the wall where I had recently painted a fresh coat. You know that mesmerizing moment when the paint first goes on? It glistens and shifts in the light, almost as if it has a personality of its own. I thought, "Why not? I could use a break from this snoozefest." So I turned my attention to the paint.

Oh, the drama! The tension! As I watched that paint dry, I was captivated. It was like a slow-burn thriller. Would it dry evenly? Would there be bubbles? What if the color changed slightly? Each moment held the promise of something exciting-something that this series had utterly failed to deliver. I was on the edge of my seat, invested in the life cycle of this paint.

The worst zombie TV show/film. I've ever seen

I will seriously disappointed with the show. It has a lot of famous British TV actors or actresses in it.

The TV show is like a cheap knock off of George Romero's 70's and 80's horror films. The acting is far below standard. The storyline, is something from 40 years ago and poorly constructed.

I know it has different finances to The Walking Dead, but it shows. I'd rather watch the original Night of the living dead movies, over this pile of poop

I gave up on this TV show after a few episodes. The whole plot of it was just stupid. I'm still kind of speechless now at what I've seen. I don't even understand how Channel four, thought 'wow this is a great show, let's air it'.

Truth be told, if I had to wait on this show in any capacity, whether write, actor, director or producer, I would be ashamed and be keeping it off my IMDb.

Hollyoaks with some red syrup...

I'm so bloody disappointed it's untrue, I 'liked' Ben Wheatley (well kill list) but he's steadily fallen from grace. This is rubbish, terrible writing, terrible acting, forced DEI, rubbish effects, the whole gamut. As the title suggests, this reminds me of Hollyoaks with a bit of squirty blood. (Why do the 'zombies' -incredibly loose- just have their mouths constantly stained red when they haven't bloody eaten anything?) goto a Hay barn and light a fire in the middle of the place and scream food? It's just blinking daft, oh yeah, sorry, it's supposed to be a comedy? The are no funny bits, it's just dire... Give me 20 quid and I'm sure I could do better. Awful awful rubbish, what a waste of talent? What the hell were C4 thinking? What was Ben thinking? What were the cast thinking? What am I thinking?... Yeah that's right, I'm thinking this is dross of the highest order. Because I'm a masochist I'll watch it all (pray for me) only because there's sod all else on telly... Talk about end times...

This is really bad

This is bad.

We've given it two episodes and bailed, it's naff, poorly acted, bad scripting, not funny enough to be a comedy, not scary enough to be a horror, not dramatic enough to be a drama, it's poor. The teenagers are dreadful actors, some of the adults are bad too, Johnny Vegas is probably the best in it, others are wooden AF.

Ben Wheatley is a master, Kill List, Sightseers, In the Earth, A Field in England all excellent, this is bad.

When you have great comedy zombie movies like Shaun of the Dead to inevitably compare to, this is woefully poor.

I think it's trying to be like a naff B movie, but it is just totally naff

When there is so much good TV to choose from, across multiple platforms, this is poor.

Huge let down.

When first saw add for this thought was going to be really good and fun and so close to Halloween thought hell yeah.

So can imagine my dissapointment (maybe) when saw this, comedy horror.? Nope not at all was no larfs in this horror was OK but the writing the poor poor writing was just that poor and extremely predictable and the DEI in this made me groan and roll eye's thinking yeah of course it is. But on bright side if can call it that the acting is ok and special effects decant but honestly and sadly that's about it.

This could of been great and so good but nope it wasn't what a waist 'sigh' may of been over generous with rating at best was ok.

P.s. Reaching this word count is a pain and 600 odd words dame.

[6.2] More spill

We need more British zombie productions, movies and series. That was a total fun watch and a super fresh take on elderly zombies who talk!, have dusk-of-life confrontational, mini-identity, existential crisis all graced with super nonsense children crisis of their own.

Ghoulish it was many times, but nicely built in the script and as much as the logic of it lacked, the ending was interesting enough to have a more comedic season 2 with the help of Channel 4.

Generation Zzzzzzz

A chemical spill from a lone military vehicle (strange, no escort?) turns the residents of a nearby old people's home into flesh eating creatures with superhuman powers. I will not call them zombies because they are not. Zombies are re-animated corpses, these are living talking people infected with a man made virus. When Channel 4 started showing trailers for this new series I thought that it looked promising. The reality was the complete opposite! For a start it is set in the fictional town of Dambury, situated 85km (52 miles) from London yet many of the accents are northern plus the landscape is too hilly for the South-East (it was shot in Wales). The characters, both young and old, are on the whole poor, as is much of the dialogue and acting. One of the worst characters is a Scottish "teen" called Stefan, the actor looks far too old to be playing a school kid (and he's not the only one) and I had trouble understanding his mumbling. Established and more mature actors including Robert Lindsay and Anita Dobson (an Eastenders legend) are here but fail to add much. Comedian Johnny Vegas is in the cast too but does not last very long, no great loss! If you do watch this expect to see the most pathetic drug dealers and soldiers ever! There are pointless sub plots and plot holes, how can a group of infected pensioners roam around killing people for a week in a locked down area without being found by the authorities? The pace is very slow, stretched to six one hour episodes (less commercials) it's a challenging bore and I am sure that it could have been cut down and shot as a film instead. This crap was written and directed by Ben Wheatley, I have seen some of his movies and was quite impressed by them but this TV series was a big let down, the only good things being some gory effects and the music for the closing credits.

The townward viral.

Gory melodrama with pretensions.

Ben Wheatley seems to be an intelligent and articulate man that can't resist making brutal and horrific thrillers that drop c-bombs throughout. All the while he seems to teetering on the edge of parody without falling in.

The kids are great, fun to watch going through their respective emotional meat grinders, the adults too have some levity and warmth. The elderly, however seem laboured under their make up and endless trooping through forests. And kids wandering off endlessly gets a bit worn out.

Just as Michael Smiley, an actor familiar from his other movies seems better suited to comedy, so the series' more serious moments are a bit lightweight rather than dramatic. What weighty drama there is between Michael and Billy who have the right blend of gravitas and intensity to their respective roles, whether it menaced by dealers, comrades, zombies or each other.

There's so much going on, real drama, gore and sci-fi shtick that the 6 episodes are an easy watch and apart from a disappointing final episode are a great addition to the zombie canon.

Like every zombie film, but longer

An army truck crashes with a tank of zombie juice crashes - seen that before, ticket updates, seen that before,, boring- seen that before, Just because you put Z or Zombie in the title does not make it interesting of good. That died with Romero and Shaun of the dead! We do not need 6 episodes of this tat. Such a waste of everyone's time to even give this rubbish a bit of time.

Go and watch Danny Boyles 28 Days films if you want a zombie film rather than this loaded full of adverts piece of junk. ITV at its worst, no original ideas and just stealing from the pioneers of the genre who should be ashamed.

Boomer Zombies Vs Gen Zs

As a Gen Z I can confirm this is how I would deal with Boomer Zombies....

No but truthfully this fun zombie romp of a series tactically steers between a plethora of heavy topical issues, each bisected with fun unique gory deaths.

Sue Johnston is outstanding as a zombie with some form of a conscious. Anita Dobson is incredibly fun, her scenes encapsulate the idea that generational gaps exist from grandparent to parent as well as parent to child.

It is worth the ad breaks every 15 minutes however, though it is no fault of Wheatley's, the ad breaks do stop the flow. Just as you are getting into the fun of it you are jump-scared by a car advert.

Not relatable

As a zombie flick and series lover I cannot feel but to be underserved. This was listed as "comedy", but the only thing I found that maybe was meant to be funny was the portrayal of British people with an IQ far below par - which actually isn't funny at all. I personally didn't get the young vs. Old reference that seems to be an issue here (generation Z), but that may be because I'm from the so called "lost generation". Still score this a solid above average for gore, effects and originality. But hey: it's only doable without the shitload of commercials. In the end a quite solid series if you're not too anglo-phobic but not "Shaun of the Dead" 2.0.

Pretty crap, don't bother

Watched this on the recommendations of my much younger family members. Wow, yeah it's really not great.

Almost like the people who made it basically went to the pub after watching Hollyoaks, then got home and watched the walking dead.

They then got called into a meeting at 9am next morning (still pissed), and had sod all else to come up with.

And don't let me name dropping those *ahem "legendary programmes"😅 into believing this guff is actually worth a watch. It really isn't.

Even the inclusion of an evil Robert Lindsay (who I normally quite like) can't save this s**t show.

Shame really as the first episode showed some promise, but it swiftly descends into mundane at best..
