Full disclosure, I have only heard the first three episodes.
First of all, what the hell is True Noir? It's an old school style noir audio drama based on FDR era America and mob shenanigans. This series absolutely has a stacked cast, including TVs Michael Rosenbaum, an experienced actor in his own rite, who is also famous for having played Lex Luthor in the 2000s on Smallville. Rosenbaum is the lead playing Nathan Heller, and old school detective, who from what I can tell is THE fictional character placed in the actual historical events...The series seems to be directed by Robert Meyer Burnett, I though that I recognized that name but he turned out to be the director of Free Enterprise, the late 90s LA hang movie about a couple of Star Trek fans who want to be writers, an entertaining blast from the past.
The audio quality is top notch, the voice cast is great and even the music is rather impressive. This is a glossy and well made throwback to the days of old school radio dramas.
The only thing that I bumped into a little was the fact that it was an audio drama, this far post pandemic. Podcasts and audiobook and audio dramas re-ignited during the pandemic, due to necessity, proximity and practical purposes, but for the life of me, I cannot understand why a project like this, based on this material isn't a live action or AT LEAST an animated venture. If anything could do with a little visual pizzazz, it's noir detective series.
I understand what they are going for and it's pretty good, from what I have heard thus far, it's just the audio only nature is a little bit unusual. Also, the delivery system for the series is the bummer. It only seems to be available through the official website, which is little more than a 90s era website with poor functionality and a bizarre interface. I feel like this would be more digestible if it were available on a user friendly audio platform such as Apple Music or something of that ilk.
If you can put up with my couple of complaints and this sort of fare is up your alley, then I think it's worth checking out.
