A Thrilling Ride: Lauryn Ford Dominates in You Picked the Right One

Just finished watching You Picked the Right One, and I've got to say, this movie is a wild ride! Dwayne Alexander Smith really nailed it with this one.

The movie is about Venus King, played by Lauryn Ford. She's married to Damon King, a crime boss played by Camille Gaston. When Venus gets kidnapped by some masked criminals looking for a big ransom, things get crazy, fast. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat as you watch how Venus handles everything.

Lauryn Ford's performance as Venus is amazing and steals the spotlight. She's smart, tough, and totally in control. Maurice Whitfield, who plays Mr. Black, the main kidnapper, is equally impressive. His performance as the tough, calculating leader of the kidnappers adds a lot of depth to the story. He brings a mix of intimidation and vulnerability that makes his character stand out.

The supporting cast is solid too, with plenty of funny and intense moments. The movie is full of suspense and keeps you guessing. The pacing is perfect, and every scene packs a punch. The cinematography and soundtrack add to the intense vibe.

Without spoiling anything, You Picked the Right One is all about not underestimating people and the power of resilience. It's got strong characters, lots of twists, and keeps you hooked the whole time. If you love crime thrillers, definitely check this one out. You won't regret it.

So much more than a typical kidnapping story

This film is much more intelligent and engaging than a typical kidnapping story. The writing is sharp, and the performances across the board are solid. The battle of wits between Venus and Mr. Black is captivating and full of psychological warfare. Despite being a low-budget film, it achieves a high level of suspense and atmosphere, and its unexpected ending is unforgettable. It's a must-watch for anyone who enjoys crime thrillers with strong characters, intricate dynamics, and thrilling twists. So if you're looking for a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you thinking long after the credits roll, this is definitely one to add to your watchlist.

Fun little movie that plays like a big movie .

I Thought it was gonna be your typical kidnapping story, but nope. From the moment the mob bosses lady is taken for ransom you can tell she's sizing up her captors, figuring out how to turn the tables. And when she does, it's straight-up genius. She doesn't need brute force-she uses her mind, her instincts, and a deep understanding of human nature to manipulate every situation in her favor. The tension keeps building as she plays her captors against each other, and the way power shifts throughout is what really makes this one stand out. The leader of the kidnappers, is no fool either, and watching them go head-to-head makes for some gripping scenes. The writing is sharp, the performances are solid, and for a low-budget film, it pulls off an impressive level of suspense. I didn't know whether I should root for the bad guys or the other bad guys. And the ending is something I have never seen before.

A Very Smart Thriller

This movie was a very smart thriller with a standout original lead character. I've been watching movies of this genre for a very long time and I have to say that this one really surprised me. It's not your basic run-of-the-mill crime thriller. The lead, Venus King, is definitely a force to be reckoned with. From the moment she's taken , you can tell she's always thinking, always calculating, and that's what makes her such a compelling lead character. The writing is sharp and intelligent, keeping the tension high without relying on action or cliches. The performances are solid across the board, especially Mr. Black, who brings an intensity that always keeps the stakes high. The dynamic between Venus and her captors is what really drives the story, and the way power shifts throughout is handled masterfully. It also kept me guessing right up until the every end. For a low budget film, it does an impressive job creating suspense and atmosphere. Definiotely worth the watch!

Not your usual kidnap film

A good thrilling indie kidnap caper complete with the usual idiotic kidnapper gang waving guns and knives but never really seeming to actually go through with their many vocal threats against the kidnappee (Venus King). The lighting and colours are well done and avoid the usual grainy dark scenes found in indie films. The lead heroine (Venus King played by Lauryn Ford) is characteristically sassy and bold despite her situation and there are enough twists and turns in the film to hold the attention of viewers throughout the length of the film duration. Overall it is a fun film, long enough to keep the interest without dragging.

Venus King is Not to Be Underestimated!!

This is one of those thrillers where you can just feel the tension in every scene. Venus King isn't just smart-she's dangerous in the best way. When she's kidnapped, her captors think they're in control, but she quickly proves she's the real threat. Mr. Black, the leader of the kidnappers, is no fool-he's intense and calculated, making for a worthy opponent. But Venus is always a step ahead, turning the situation in her favor with pure intelligence. No over-the-top action, just sharp writing and a battle of wills that keeps you hooked until the very end. I feel Lauryn Ford is a new star in the making.....I'm going to check out her other films!!

Zeke

I had the honor of meeting this young man and I think he is on his way to becoming a great actor. This movie had a familiar plot and was well edited. Usually in non mainstream movies the acting is bad. But they did a good job in this one. The female lead made you believe her character. The kidnappers also made you want to smack them for their stupidity. And the male lead character played his role to the tee as well. I loved the part when the woman.....did you actually think I was going to spoil the movie for you ha NOT! I am looking forward to seeing these actors and especially Zeke in the future.

Sharp and Suspenseful, But the lead is a bit much

As a filmmaker, I respect a tight, well-executed thriller, and You Picked the Wrong One delivers exactly that. Venus King is sharp, ruthless, and always in control-watching her outmaneuver her captors is pure suspense. Mr. Black is a strong antagonist, and their battle of wits keeps the tension high. For a low-budget film, the storytelling is solid, and the direction makes the most of every scene. My only gripe? I wish Venus had a little more warmth or vulnerability to make her easier to root for. That said, it's still a well-crafted, engaging thriller that does a lot with what it has. Totally worth the watch!

If you love thrillers, this one is well worth the watch!!!

Delivering a sharp and satisfying twist on the crime thriller genre, director and screenwriter Dwayne Alexander Smith plays an intricate mind game with the viewer in which the tables are constantly turning.

When kidnapped Venus King (Ford), the wife of shadowy underworld crime boss Damon King (Gaston), finds herself handcuffed to a chair in a darkened room, in the middle of nowhere, it doesn't stop her from turning greed and paranoia against her three abductors (Whitfield, Hoffman, Ross). What a fun ride watching Venus play with the kidnappers' heads.

Kudos to everyone involved. The visual handiwork and clever writing shows me that Smith's artistic bag of tricks is indeed impressively stocked.

Power Shifts and Mind Games Galore

1. "Power Shifts and Mind Games Galore" "This film is a masterclass in tension and psychological manipulation. It starts with a kidnapping-a scenario we've seen in countless thrillers-but what sets it apart is how quickly the power dynamics shift. Venus King isn't your typical victim. She's a strategist, always thinking several moves ahead, turning her captors into pawns in her game. The film thrives on these shifts in control, where the line between predator and prey blurs. Mr. Black, the enigmatic leader of the kidnappers, is no fool. He's ruthless, calculated, and believes he's in control-until Venus begins to unravel his carefully laid plans. Their interactions are electric, filled with subtle manipulations, psychological warfare, and unexpected alliances. Every scene is charged with tension, as you watch Venus manipulate not just her captors but the entire situation. The film challenges the traditional power dynamics we expect in thrillers, proving that true strength comes from intelligence, not brute force. It's a riveting, thought-provoking ride."
