You will love it or hate it

It's pretentious and cheesy, unique and amazing. The only promise I can make is that you have never seen anything like it. That in itself should be enough to make any movie or art lover feel like this movie was money and time well spent. Of course there are flaws, but it's punk, that's what gives it character. If you spend all your money on Hollywood reboots, stay far, far away...

You can enjoy the humor in this movie on the surface level or try to dig deeper into the many metaphors. I just went along for the ride and had a great time.

Hilarious

Im not sure what the director intended with this movie, but I honestly could not take anything serious lol. Extremely weird and odd, but funny. Made me laugh a lot so for that i give it an 9.

drugs sex and rock and roll is the premise but it is so much more

Quite a few drugs and some really odd moments as well as a story like about abortion which some could interpret to make fun of the topic. Bar this passing moment the movie is fun, upbeat, quirky, indie, dark and thoughtful. Its a good watch no matter what.

A fun British film that doesn't take itself too serious

Having read some of the other reviewers criticisms about this film I felt compelled mention some of the good points take me to enjoy this film and give it a 9. firstly whilst I normally despise anybody who says such cliches as "at least I had fun making this film" when really they mean "this film is terrible" but I really mean it when I say they the cast and crew clearly had a riot making. I fear that some people will simply not get this kind of humour, as it is very much a "League of Gentleman" style of humour (in fact Matt Lucas stars in this flick) and I absolutely loved it with the smuttier aspects of the humour. This film is a wild and wacky tribute to the 1970s and England's time of change. I felt that the film clearly highlighted some of the aspects of punk music such as the idea of being anti-capitalist and anti-establishment together with the motto of "tear it down". I feel it is what helps us become a left wing country and more welcoming to our non-British fellow people. I won't mention about how this amazing defining time in English history is now sadly crumbling because it is too political but I would be amiss to omit a nod the political ideals that this film crams into an overall entertaining endeavour.

If phrases like "this is a local shop for local people" and " this parrot is dead!" amuse you even slightly, then I feel that you will have just the right sense of humour to really grasp this film's eccentricities , for it has many, and they will not be to everybody's liking. So tread careful dear reader, for this title is can be likened to Marmite in my mind . You will either love it or hate it, but I strongly suggest you give it some time. You may grow to love it as much as I have, and I was very pleasantly surprised by my discovery of this movie. It is easily one of the better original comedy films produced recently.

Stunning film with brilliant performances

I had no idea what this film was before watching it. At first I was going to turn it off because I had visions of a new version of Romper Stomper set in punk Britain. I'm glad I stayed with it because when I realised there was an alien storyline it became interesting. I recognised Elle Fanning of course and then Nicole Kidman. Nicole of course a very well established actress who can take on a whole variety of roles with ease. Elle Fanning though ran this show from start to finish. She's proven herself very capable of virtually any sort of role and adept at difficult ones. She shines in this movie playing Zan the alien, who enjoys punk and falls in love with a human. She's utterly believable in her role and I'm surprised she hasn't had an Oscar yet, but I don't think it will be long before she gets one. Entertaining and out there film which i hugely enjoyed on many levels.

Brilliant and deeply moving film.

Superb acting, particularly by Elle Fanning.

The way the alien culture was portrayed was generally rather silly, but that's a feature not a bug, as it was also very smart, creative, and artfully avant-garde.

If "artfully avant-garde" puts you off, you might not want to watch it. If you like "artfully avant-garde", you'll likely enjoy it!

The only thing I've found unrealistic is...

The costume designer is almost genius. That's for sure. But... I'm watching this movie over and over mostly because of aliens' costumes. The only thing I've found weird is... Why on earth the leaders of aliens wear cheap PVC gear while their people enjoy expensive and gorgeous latex? Just take a look at white and especially blue team. That's what I've found beyond the reality.

Bizarre yes but....

Get your head in the game, great sic-fi with LOADS of late seventies London punk references. Kind of a Altered States meets Rude Boy. Stellar cast with great acting and if you can read into the bizarreness (like people do with A Clockwork Orange) you'll see the social references. It's one of those films you'll either love or loathe, this reviewer loves it.

If you love Hedwig, Rocky Horror, or Neil Gaiman...

A punk sci-fi alien sex comedy might not be for everyone, and that's ok.

Yet for lovers of intelligent sci-fi mixed with experimental cinema, this movie dances like the sex pistols running through Bowie's "The Man Who Fell to Earth." Apparently based on a Neil Gaiman short story, the director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch stamps his punk musical feel onto Neil Gaiman's wonderfully thought out premise, and a cross cultural love story between aliens and punks entertainingly spews forth.

Frankly, I loved it. Elle Fanning's adorable portrayal of naively transgressing from a controlling alien culture into 1977's punk world highlights the nature of punk's original anarchistic push against our own cultural norms

I think time will prove critics wrong as this definitively un-hollywood take on punk and imagined alien culture clash elevates from the mass of easy critique into the status of cult classic.

Time well spent

The first review said a bigger budget and higher production value would have helped a lot. I disagree. I think the story was told beautifully. I must say that I'm a huge fan of Nicole Kidman, and I love anything that John Cameron Mitchell is involved in. Mr . Mitchell is a genius at doing a lot with a little. Miss Fanning made me cry at the end, and that is not an easy thing to do. I truly thought it would end with everyone ... you know.

I'm really glad it didn't. The only thing I care about is that this film made me feel good. I must admit that I was very perplexed through most of it. I'm glad it took a while for the truth to be revealed. I loved the suspence and anticipation, and I loved the weirdness . Oh yes, Miss Kidman's makeup and costume was excellent. She was hot ! Really good film, I have no problem giving it a 9.
