I'd heard from a friend that this movie was good. Watched the trailer, enjoyed the animation style, and decided to give it a watch. Oh. My. Goodness. I'm so desperately hooked on these fictional bands. I'm starting to listen to real K-Pop now to scratch the itch. Those gosh-darn Saja Boys and their smooth moves got me in a trance. I would gladly give my soul to them if they played "Your Idol" for me even just ONCE. And all of this is coming from a guy who thought BTS was lame and never really paid attention to NewJeans or Stray Kids. I now need to listen to K-Pop every second of my life or else I feel incomplete. I forgot to mention, but the animation for this movie is FANTASTIC! Better than Into The Spiderverse in my opinion. It's like eye candy to look at. Anyways, those are all the thoughts I have on this amazing film. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go catch up on all of this K-Pop music I've been ignoring for so long.
It's mostly what the title says. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, and it's extremely impressive how well they were able to replicate the style of those old cartoons. To me, it passes all expectations with flying colors! However, the rest of it is simply underwhelming. The song, even with all the effort put in, falls flat. I don't think I've ever willingly listened to it outside of this review. And the video itself, yeesh. It does bring up a very good point with our modern society, but it does so in a very "phone bad book good" way. It generalizes and exaggerates a large portion of the population, showing them off as "zombies". This, combined with the fact that it doesn't even provide a solution to the problem it brings up, makes everyone angry! They don't even make an attempt, they simply go "Haha you are all addicted to your phones while I, Chud Snafuman, cry longingly into the camera. Listen to my song!". It's like the "Nuggets" video with the kiwi, but somehow worse. "Nuggets" does not provide a solution, but it at least is more accurate, if not annoying to watch. Overall, I'd say to only watch this if you really like old-school, 1920's styled animation. Just make sure to keep it on mute.
