Wow, what a great movie. It's a slow burner for sure. I'm so glad i kept watching. Poor Marty, the lead character, a 12 year old kid who just seems to be looking for someone to notice him. Well unfortunately they don't. He seems to spend his days wandering around alone and miserable. He's bullied by (what seems) everyone else in the movie, you end up just feeling so sorry for this kid. The movie is a great example of societal peer pressure, nobody seems to notice that Marty is struggling, only his brother treats him with some level of dignity. Marty finally stands up for himself with dire consequences, and there lies the key to his issues. Everyone wanted him to be a punchbag, where the victim always gets told ("You are strong") while the perpetrators get told, ("You are weak"), therefore releasing them of blame. The movie aims to change that, and Marty refuses to feel guilt over his actions, and he sets new boundaries over the bully and victim stereotype. There was an 80's nostalgic feeling to the movie as-well, and the music was beautiful. It's a slow burner, and not a grotesque torture porn flick if that's your bag, for that you can watch (Headless 2015) which features in this movie. I loved this movie, because i related to Marty so much. I remember accommodating other peoples bad behaviour, and only punishing myself because people told me to rise above it, i suffered as a result. Marty was smart enough to listen to his brothers advice, and understand that not standing up for yourself, does not make you strong, it makes you WEAK.
Before i even mention the hideous accent, can we talk about the lead being an entitled brat who throws a hissy fit when she doesn't have her own way. So this guy pitches up in her bakery with the worst french accent you've never heard (more fakery than bakery) And because he doesn't tell her his life story, and he is also a baker, she throws a meltdown and acts like a Karen right at his place of work in front of customers. THEN a while later he is innocently handing out freebies outside his store, and she marches over and starts yelling at him on the street. This woman is insane, and he spends HIS time accommodating her rudeness and finding her adorable. I switched off after 40 minutes of this generic rubbish being displayed.
