Universal Studios re-mixed the film's monaural soundtrack to Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS for the 20th anniversary "Collector's Edition" DVD, replacing the older sound effects and adding some new ones (see also Tubarão (1975)).

• Extra thunderclap sound effects were added in the scene when David and Jack are walking in the moors and it starts to rain.
• The first werewolf can now be heard growling in the rear channels as it circles David and Jack. A louder growl has been added to the rear-left channel after Jack says "It's circling us" to make the audience jump.
• All the gunshots and car crash sound effects have been replaced.
• The train in the "London tube" scene can now be heard moving from one channel to another
• Despite already being bad enough, the entire mix is inexplicably pitched down a half-pitch and sounds very different from the original mix.

Due to a mastering error, the second Region 2 DVD (the 2-Disc Special Edition) has been edited to remove the scene where David calls home and speaks to his sister just before he attempts to cut his wrists with a pen knife

• All earlier releases of the film including the initial 2-disc 21st Anniversary Edition are uncut. Universal Studios issued a statement saying that they will remove all affected stock and issue replacement discs. All Blu-ray releases are complete and uncut

The film was edited to receive an "R" rating in the U.S. The love scene with David and Jenny was toned down. Food coming through Jack's mouth as he was eating toast was also removed.

The recent blu-ray release from Arrow Video restores the original mono mix and includes the same previous 5.1 remix as a second option. However, unlike past releases, the remix on this release corrects the pitch issue so now it's correct.

In the very early 1990s, local Detroit station TV-50 ran an alternate version of this picture that has "Happy Together" by The Turtles instead of "Moondance" by Van Morrison over the love scene.

In the original UK broadcast version of the film the dead werewolf in human form on the moors was edited out. David is seen moving his to one side and then back again, which did not make much sense to the viewer.

For it's 20th anniversary in Australia, the film was released in its uncut form on DVD, which was the same as the R rated U.S. version. (The original R rated U.S. version was cut for an M rating for its Australian theatrical release).
