Subterrain

Subterrain was slated by Jack Davenport's uncle, Jonathan Aitken. In his 2005 autobiography "Porridge and Passion", Aitken wrote:

"The boring movie, which ran for precisely one performance, was Subterrain, an esoteric short film in a genre its producer described as 'art house with social conscience'. Its plot (?) featured suicidal depression, glue sniffing, malnutrition, loneliness and a tramp's death on a haunted London Underground station after it had shut down on Christmas Eve. Subterrain would not be my choice for a cheerful evening of cinema-going, but I turned up for its opening (and closing) night in the summer of 2001 out of family loyalty. For my nephew, actor Jack Davenport, was starring in the film - shot long before he began starring in rather more popular movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean - and his wife Michelle Gomez was its producer.

Although family loyalty kept me in my seat for the mercifully brief duration of Subterrain, as soon as its titles faded I headed for the bar in need of a drink. In the queue with many others who evidently felt the same need, I observed to my sister Maria, Jack Davenport's mother, that the only people who could possibly have come to see the film must surely be closely related to the members of the cast. This was a prophetic utterance, for ten seconds later I saw a beautiful, immaculately coiffured and elegantly dressed woman queuing at the opposite side of the bar. She was the mother of the other leading actor in Subterrain."
