As a huge Hilary Duff fan, I've always enjoyed her work because she's so lovable. Unfortunately, Material Girls was almost the type of thing I would expect from Disney Channel not MGM Studios. On the plus side, the Duff sisters were likable in this movie and I came out thinking that Haylie was quite a good actress because she really brought something special to her character. Hilary also took a step up and proved herself a little bit more as an actress in certain scenes. If you really like the Duff girls, go see it and have a good time because this movie does pick up and get kind of fun but if you're looking for a really great movie, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Problem is, it's not really good either. It's not even interestingly bad. Not "so bad it's good", just dull. Stuff happens. Then more stuff happens. Then it's over. As I thought about what to say to fill in the required characters for this review, I realized what this movie needs - a laugh track. There are definitely comedy "beats" where funny things are expected to happen - but they just don't. In that way, it's like watching a (weak) sitcom without the laugh track. I'm an old man, seeing this movie 17 years after it was released, so definitely not its target audience. And I actually wish it was a worse movie, because at least that would be entertaining. Instead, I just found it mostly boring.
This movie was pretty lame. It was like a soap opera made for MTV starring 2 hot teen heiresses in the mold of Paris Hilton. The target audience is 12 year old girls and that is about all who will like this. The Duff sisters are too rich kids in charge of their late father's cosmetic company. A scandal breaks out and their company loses value, instead of selling for 100 million each they could only sell for 60 million each. Real tragic for the Marchetta sisters. Their friends outcasts them and they decide to do a little investigating rather than sell. They find sabotage within the company and fight to save their company's reputation.
FINAL VERDICT: Not much of a plot. Mildly amusing, but this movie isn't for everyone.
