Zachary Levi and Yvonne Strahovski in Chuck (2007)

User reviews

Chuck

34 reviews
7/10

Amusing and full of action series with sympathetic and attractive actors : Zachary Levi , Yvonne Strahovski and many others

Since geeky and underachieving Chuck , full name is Charles Irving Bartowski (Zachary Levi) accidentally became the mental host of the Intersect , an unprecedentedly powerful computer mind containing all information available to the US government , he's a primordial national security asset and risk . So CIA and NSA each appoint two top agents, Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) from CIA and John Casey (Adam Baldwin) from NSA to protect Chuck , and all of them become involved in fantastic and dangerous adventures . Meanwhile , his identity must be kept secret from Chuck's sister Ellie Bartowski (Sarah Lancaster) , her good-looking boyfriend Devon (Ryan McPartlin) , both surgeons , and Chuck's goofy colleagues (Joshua Gómez , Mark Christopher Lawrence , Vik Sahay , Julia Ling) in a bustling shop called Buy More , the Burbank electronics store where he works as a cover . As he works in ¨Buy More¨ who sells the latest home electronics sharing good moments along with other offbeat and peculiar characters .

This splendid series packs thrills , adventures , including mystery , twisted plots and full of action packed fighting . The series formed by 91 episodes with 5 seasons and with its fifth season becoming its final season , beginning October 28, 2011, and ending on January 27, 2012, with a two hour finale . The main premise is the following : an ordinary underdog guy named Chuck gets an email from his old college friend Bryce Larkin he opens it to see a series of pictures called the intersect which has all of the governments most vital secrets ; as Chuck has to find a way to save the day , using the intersect of course but sometimes the help of friends . Zachary Levi gives a very good and sympathetic interpretation as a computer nerd for the Buy More who discovers dark secrets when inadvertently downloads critical government information turning his life upside down . In spite of the successful series Zachary Levi has played a mediocre career as Television : Heroes Reborn , Deadbeat , Falling for You , Let it go , Tiny commando and Cinema he played Fandral in Thor : The Dark World (2013) . Two agents are assigned to guard Chuk , Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah and Adam Baldwin as John Casey , both of whom often get involved with him in spy adventures . Zachari Levi/Chuck creates a stunning chemical with his colleague the gorgeous Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah and both of whom fall in love . Support cast is frankly well , filled with familiar faces such as : Christopher Lloyd , Brandon Routh , Kristen Krouk , Tony Todd , Bruce Boxleiner ,Rachel Bilson , Robin Givens , Chevy Chase , Dolph Lundgren , Summer Glau , Ray Wise , Linda Hamilton as Chuck's mom and Gary Cole as Sarah's dad and several others ; besides , Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay had recurring roles . Natalie Martinez intervened in various episodes as well as Jordana Brewstwer as Chuch's first girlfriend . And Bonita Friedericy as General Beckman after appearing in the vast majority of episodes from seasons one through three , was finally made a regular cast member in season four . The series was well directed by a nice assortment of filmmakers such as : Robert Duncan McNeill , Jay Chandrasekhar , Jeremiah S. Chechik , Michael Schultz , Patrick Norris , Paul Marks , Norman Buckley and Zachary Levi himself directed 3 episodes (2010-2011) .

Not bad, not bad...

So I gave this TV show a chance seeing as how Lost, Heroes, and The Office are the only other things I care about on TV (oh, most of the Discovery Channel is good too).

Regardless...I gave Chuck a chance and by the end of the first episode I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was exciting, funny, and really just plain fun. By the second (or maybe third) episode I began to realize the plot was actually a bit dull and it was mainly because one episode in particular just seemed like a waste of my life. But I forgave it and went on.

I read all these harsh reviews from other people and while some of them MAY be correct in certain aspects I just say, "Lighten up". It's fun. Period. It's not ground breaking, deep, or life changing, but it's a pretty darn good alternative to most entertainment out there and like I said if you can just not be so critical you might find that you enjoy it.

For example, I agree that it's near impossible if not absolutely impossible for every government secret that this country contains to ALL be sent in one email overnight on an everyday PC nonetheless. But also I don't believe actual super heroes walk the earth or that one man can stop multiple world crises in one whole day throughout his entire life, yet 'Heroes' and '24' are some of the top rated shows on television today.

My main point: Chuck might not be glorious, worthy of rewards, or breath-taking; but it IS fun, it is laughable, and it is worth giving a shot.

Very entertaining show that will have you tuning in next week.

Chuck is a silly, un-original, wholly unbelievable show...but I have a blast watching it. The format of the show is fairly predictable on a week to week basis. You know Chuck is gonna have to balance time between work, family, friends, and his reluctant role as a spy. There are gonna be a lot of situations where trauma, pain, and death SHOULD occur, but do not. Chuck and company are always going to wiggle their way out of an inconceivable jam. Even with all that predictability, the show still manages to entertain me.

If you watch this show picking apart all the things that can't happen, and wouldn't happen, you won't enjoy this show at all. Like I said, its a silly show that's very light-hearted given the intensity of the situations Chuck and Co. find themselves in. The truth is, you can't make a believable comedy about terrorism, criminals, bombs, and secret agents. Its not a "funny" subject in real life, so a comedy about such issues is naturally gonna be a little short in the realism department. If you don't like suspending your disbelief, you will NOT enjoy this show. I ,however, just want something simple and soft once in awhile and "Chuck" fits that bill nicely.

The characters are likable and you get to delve into the personal life of every main character, and see what they are all about as the show goes on. The action is fast-paced. The show moves very quickly. It's definitely not a boring show; there are always multiple sub-plots going on at the same time. Its got good music, and you can pretty much look forward to a new villain or crony every episode. Which is nice.

Look, this show isn't gonna win any awards for writing or originality, but it makes up for it with its quirkiness and light-hearted humor, while still mixing in some intense situations. I've spent lots of time watching shows that are much more intellectual, hilarious, more realistic and more original, but few have the charm and watch-ability of Chuck. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but the best way I can describe it is: Chuck is a FUN show.

Chuck is like a cupcake: provides no nutritional value, it doesn't fill you up, but it tastes good and I have a smile while I'm eating it.

Just for reference, here are shows I've been watching lately: The Office, South Park, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Breaking Bad, Seinfeld, along with sports and some game shows.

clever - dry humor - unlikely hero

Chuck as I find it is a show for those who are able to appreciate a dry sense of humor, and can pick up on the subtle comedy that makes this show worth watching.

Of course for those people who need a laugh track to tell them what joke is funny and what is not, probably not their kind of show.

The spy aspect of the show is not the focus point, it is not the most cloak and dagger type of missions, yet still very enjoyable. The true driving aspect of the show is the way chucks new life as a government spy affects all of the relationships in his life. The interactions between all of the other characters of the show is what makes it worth tuning in on a weekly basis.

Just the comedy that I was looking for

Well we are clearly not talking about a masterpiece here. But this is T.V. The home of Cheers, Frazier, Friends, American Chooper etc. What are we looking for when we come home from a hard day of work? Not always the essence of thought and drama right? Clearly. We sometimes look for something that just makes us interested and is fun in a light way.

This is a lovable comedy for the geek in you. It is simple, fun, unusual, and funny. I am so tired of the Friends, Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond - read typical - stuff that is out there. This is a new angle for those interested in taking it easy with a lovable character, and not interested in something that seems the same as just about everything else out there.

The trashing of this series seems needless. This series does not aspire to much other than fun. Why ask it to? Anyway, I look forward to it every Monday.

Oh and by the way, do we really need more programming time being occupied by series like Dexter and Sopranos? Don't get me wrong, i have watched both and can see how critics are engrossed. But there is also something insidious and creepy about glorifying corruption and killing. ( in my city a person was just killed by someone inspired by Dexter.) What is wrong with simple clean fun hearkening back to something like Get Smart?

Isn't it great that this type of programming remain on the airwaves? I suggest viewing this series without any higher analysis. Sometimes that is worth something in and of itself no?

Promising Start, Disappointing finish

So I've been watching this since the beginning which I was very pleased with the show. It was funny, it was unique, and most of all entertaining. The first season was excellent. It was interesting because I've never seen a show like this. All the episodes in the first season were very very entertaining. Then came the second season. I loved the first 7 episodes. It was like the 1st season and it wasn't getting old. Then when they introduced Jill in the show it had gotten to the point where I thought I was watching the same episode. They were all about the same thing, getting the intersect out of Chuck's head. This wasn't the problem but since they introduced "fulcrum" it had gotten repetitive. This is where I started to have a problem. Then comes the very end of the 2nd season. When I say the end, I mean the last episode, last few minutes. I won't say what happened, but I will say that it completely takes out the part that makes Chuck, "Chuck." When you watch it, you'll know. Overall I enjoyed the show, but I hope they fix what they did in the 2nd season so that I can actually watch the 3rd one.

What's up Chuck

The story follows a slacker named Chuck who accidentally gets implanted with 'the intersect', a device that makes him a great spy. This show feels like a time capsule for 2007. Chuck works at a Best Buy type store called the 'Buy More'. The technology shown off in the background is very much of that time. A whole lot of Guitar Hero and Wii Sports. The episodic spy missions were a lot of fun. The ongoing romance plot between Sarah and Chuck was tiresome. The plot about keeping things secret from Chuck's sister Ellie also got old. Jeff and Lester were hit and miss as comedic relief. Casey, Morgan and Devon were all awesome, and the show overstayed its welcome with its final season. But there is still a lot of good spy plots and overarching villains that the series introduces. Just learn to quit while you're ahead.

I Like Chuck

After being on my watch list for years, I finally watch Chuck from beginning to end, and overall enjoyed it. The first three seasons were my favorite, with season 2 being the stand out for me. The final two seasons I still liked, but just weren't as good to me. The cast is what really makes this show enjoyable in my opinion. Zachary Levi is the Grant Gustin of this show: high energy with a positive attitude and knows how to have fun. Unfortunately, his character suffers the same problem as Barry does in the Flash, that being as the show goes on, the character becomes more and more serious, making him less and less fun. This is a trend that happens with most of the characters actually, and because of it I felt myself having less fun with the show in the later seasons. The supporting cast works excellently for the most part, with Casey being my stand out favorite. Jeff and Lester feel a little tacked on in the later seasons, especially when the Buy More becomes less of a focus. The nerd appreciation is also a nice touch, and I thought it was really cool how Chuck has a Master Chief helmet in his bedroom that you can see pretty often. I liked how this show is pretty campy and almost a parody of spy media, but it feels less so in the later seasons when they take it more serious. I also wanted to mention that I though Kristin Kreuk was completely wasted in this show. I think she's an amazing actor, and they string her along as a background character for 4 episodes, which was very disappointing. Chuck is a good show, but if I were to watch it again I would strongly consider only watching the first three seasons.

Spy Thriller For Nerds

Chuck started out as an entertaining, lighthearted fun little show. Full of quirky characters and good jokes, long running gags. It was literally a fan based programme in every sense.

The cast is devoted and they do a great job. The first 2 seasons felt fresh and new. Nothing revolutionary but the creators had a narrative and an idea what they are aiming for. Since it's not aired on CW they don't just blindly follow the formula of hot guest stars, they work it out in a more clever and authentic way. Season 3 started to be less on point and they started to run out of ideas by the end of it. Season 4 suffered a lot of that, the show started to decline in quality. More and more storyline felt boring. Season 5 was the final nail in the coffin. Totally out of ideas wasn't enough bad, the show started to repeat itself over and over again, ending a great begining with a horrible season.

The finale is way too open and left many fans dissapointed. Overall it's a wholesome and very chill series.

Light comedy/action with potential

Just started watching Chuck on my girlfriend's recommendation and after watching most of the first series I can say that it definitely has potential.

It is certainly not going win any awards for best script/acting/whatever, but the characters are likable, the nerd humour works (especially if you're a nerd and pick up the references) and the relationships are being built up. It is light stuff. Someone mentioned Saved By The Bell. Maybe throw in some Parker Lewis etc and you get the idea. It is fun, silly, unlikely and lovable. If you don't want that check out something like True Blood (which is excellent).

To be honest, if you think this is one of the worst shows on TV, I feel really lucky that we don't get the majority of US TV in Australia because you guys must have some absolute junk.

As for comments along the lines of "I turned this off to watch Dancing with the Stars", well, I think we can pretty much establish a framework for your opinions.

Action Comedy... if you don't take it seriously

Geeky Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi) works at electronic store Buy More with idiot friend Morgan Grimes and others. He accidentally gets zapped by supercomputer Intersect, an unprecedentedly powerful computer mind containing all information available to the US government. So the US government appoints top agents Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) and John Casey (Adam Baldwin) to protect him and use him as an asset. They go off on spy adventures unbeknownst to Chuck's sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and her All-American doctor boyfriend.

This is a action comedy spoof of a spy show. It's an enjoyable show as long as you don't take it seriously. The cast is fun. Levi is a solid blend of goofy and leading man. It's a fun show.

Episodic series

Well it's good but not good enough for me. Because I really don't like those episodic type of series where you can skip 1 or 2 episode and it will be perfectly okay.. 😪

Good first seasons, then...

I wish they did 3 seasons only. To me, it was a steep downhill afterward.

Chuck himself used to be OK - up until he's got his mainstream haircut and a double chin.

Dalton was good, as always, despite the ridiculous script. But then again, he shines everywhere.

My condolences to the German guy who picks those two Buy More schmucks for his label - and takes them away. He should have done that after the very 1st season though.

The Aussie girl as Sarah, on the other hand, never lets you down. Besides looking, well, awesome, with her acting she can handle a lot more than Chuck & Dexter.

Not to diminish the others, she carries the entire series and it's never enough of her.

Started out as a awesome show but S03 is failing

First of i don't agree with a lot of people that say the acting is bad and it sucks its worst on TV and that kinda stuff. Those people can have there own opinion of course but i think thats just silly.S01 and S02 where very entertaining and funny,i even think that next to NCIS i never saw a show where the interaction between the actors where that good and funny....But then S03 started and i have to say that the choices they made in the story line didn't do the show good and the charm between the characters is dissolving quickly, the upgrade chuck received downgraded the shows charm.if this continues through the year this could very well be the last year we will see chuck on TV,i still hope they can fix this but i really don't think so.

Usual love story but it works

"Genre: Action | Comedy | Drama" The comedy part is absolutely wrong, you will laugh hardly while watching Chuck. The true Genre should be in this line: "Action | Romance | Drama | Comedy". Maybe Producers thought that this is an all-included TV series but it's aspect is mainly Action and Romance. I ask myself why I am watching Chuck. I didn't laugh much, I don't have lots of fun from actions, so why? I liked it but I didn't know why. After completing all series, I found out that this is a impossible-love-story. Movie business knows that impossible-love-stories always work, if you find a good story with good built basis, it will work really well. Chuck's impossible love with Sarah is one of them. Chuck's actions are not bad at all, it completes love story and makes series fluent. Unfortunately, Chuck-always-founds-a-solution situations are somehow disturbing. Chuck, Sarah, John, Chuck's sister and Mr. Awesome are good performing. I cannot say same for others, especially for Morgan. Comedy sketches were not well written and also cast could not make it better. As a result, I had fun with these series, and I am waiting for new episodes hoping for better comedy sketches.
