The Sound of Waves

This is one of the best indie films I've seen. Very watchable. It kept me interested all the way through and I was disappointed when it ended. The two leads, Alex Frnka and Tom Phelan, were very natural and so real I felt like I was eavesdropping. Patrick L. Peterson, the Stage Manager, was excellent. His character was understated and he hit just the right notes without it feeling pushed. The dialogue was realistic and carried the story along nicely. The director, cameraperson and editor should be commended. The close ups, the flashbacks, the montage at the end were right on. Without giving anything away there were a couple of character choices I questioned, but it's nit picking when the overall film was so good, and I would have loved to see what happened next. Maybe in a part two? Anyway, this is definitely worth watching.

This is an intelligent, heartfelt movie that really engages you. I don't know if any elements in this film were autobiographical, but it felt too lived in for me to believe that nothing from someone's real life didn't find its way into this movie. I really liked that this film portrayed something both real and cinematic about love. The lead characters, in both the their shared past history and in their current lives, are conveying something complex and simple about emotional connections. Complex enough to be real, but also emotional enough to to make this a truly crowd-pleasing story. Well written and directed, with characters we identify with and cheer for. A story told well from both sides of view. I was thoroughly charmed by this movie!

Ethan and Jenna were a couple of thespians who fell in love. But when Jenna came out as a lesbian, Ethan pulled the plug. Fast forward 10 years and now Ethan and Jenna are ancient history. They say write what you know. So Ethan pours it all into a script. He partners up with Katheryn, a director and they hold a casting for the play. Guess who shows up? You'll have to watch the film to find out-okay, it's Jenna. Jenna shows up, slays the sides and nails the part. Then Jenna reads the rest of the script...Okay, now you've really got to watch the film. You see, Ethan (Tom Phelan) and Jenna (Alex Frnka) could easily be real-life partners. Their chemistry is that good. Also expect a standout performance from Ione Butler.

The Sound of Waves is about an actress named Jenna, played by Alex Frnka, who auditions for an exciting new role but is conflicted when she finds out that her love interest, Ethan, is played by Tom Phelan, who is also the writer of the play. Both of them have to confront their past, making acting opposite each other more challenging. At first, Jenna almost loses the part, but her audition is so good that everyone involved knows she's the best and only choice.

Soda Persi, who plays Kathryn, the play's director, brings a fresh take to her role and good energy to every scene she's in.

The Sound of Waves is a fun film with good acting all around and excellent casting. The production value was impressive, very polished for a low-budget indie. The editing maintained a good pace, and the overall story was enjoyable to watch. I thought I knew how it would end, only to be pleasantly surprised. I also liked how the film ties in the ocean with the story.
