Paul Walter Hauser and Taron Egerton in Black Bird (2022)

Paul Walter Hauser stole the show

Don't get me wrong but these crime shows are totally dependent on how good the criminal is portrayed and Paul Walter played the role to perfection showing all the sides of Larry Hall. Taron was also really good but his breakthrough didn't come till the final episode which in hindsight was the most imp one. The conversations between Larry and Jimmy in the show are really fascinating and honestly you can try but you won't be able to take your eyes off. How every conversation brings you one step closer to figuring out the puzzle of Larry Hall is a binge worthy experience. With shows like this and Severance Apple TV is definitely bringing it's A game 🎯.

Terrific!

Black Bird is every bit as good as everyone says it is. After reading all the great reviews (it currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes) so I went into this with pretty high expectations, well this series not only met those expectations but surpassed them in every way. While there are plenty of great performances here (Ray Liotta, Greg Kinnear, Sepideh Moafi) the two stand outs everyone is talking about is Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Both give award worthy performances. In Hauser's case he actually win a Golden Globe for best supporting actor. There are so many shoes on true crime that have come out lately but Black Bird is among the best of them and should be a must watch for any fan of the genre.

Unexpected

Looking for something to binge watch, I came across this on Apple TV and it sounded intriguing but omg... I wasn't sure if I'd seen Taron Egerton in anything before this but I couldn't take my eyes off him. So handsome and so convincing as a smug and cocky Jimmy who comes down to earth by the end of the film. Ray Liotta, in a heartfelt performance, was excellent as his father.

But the real reason to watch is Paul Walter Hauser as the suspected serial killer. I alternated between feeling bad for him and despising him. He was mesmerizing.

I was hooked before the first episode ended. Well done.

Phenomenal.

Paul Walter Hauser deserves an award (or multiple) for his performance as Larry in Black Bird. He's compelling and genuine, and manages to force you to develop some sympathy for him, despite his heinous crimes. I've only seen Taron Egerton in the Kingsmen franchise, but his performance is far superior in Black Bird. I wasn't sure what to expect out of him in this serious role, but he is excellent.

Tough Story, But Worth the Watch

The reason why I gave this show a shot was because of Ray Liotta, Taron Egerton, and Greg Kinnear. I always liked their movies. Their acting was superb, as well as everybody else in this project. The pace, camera work, and symbolism really stood out as well. You can also argue on how this a great cautionary tale for our society in regards to mental health, sexual education, and how important a loving family is to a child.

The "true crime genre" itself is not something I like to watch as it's very disturbing to me, but I stuck it out as you become heavily invested in Jimmy's and the detectives struggle to lock up Hall for good. I highly recommend this even if it's hard to watch at times.

Great TV

The storyline and acting are top notch. Paul Hauser who plays Larry Hall is outstanding. After watching him immersed in this role I couldn't picture anyone else playing that character. After only a couple episodes in I'm hooked.

Excellent

Wow, this was unexpectedly not just good, but great. Really enjoyed watching this, got hooked from the very begging. Great cast and performance from everyone, specially from Taron and Paul Walter, both did a fantastic job. I finished the whole series in 2 nights, just to see how Jimmy is going to get Larry to confess. This show was brilliant, great story with great cast. Also what I liked about it, it was 6 episodes, and thanks god the producers didn't make it any longer. Overall, this was a great show that I enjoyed.

It seems Apple is on a roll making and producing good content, they got few in the pipeline, let's hope they are good.

Exceptional drama. Gripping from Episode one.

I thought this show was phenomenal after just a couple of episodes but I have just watched episode 5 and I was utterly blown away. WOW!! Sensational performances throughout and the dynamic of James and Larry is captivating and intense. Please, just watch it, cos if you don't, you'll be missing something special, and episode 5 has got to be one of the most dramatic, mesmerising, harrowing episodes I've ever seen for any show EVER.

Just when I was giving up on finding a good show on cable

Just when I was giving up on finding a good show on cable found Black Bird. Paul Walter Hauser's acting is spectacular what a talent, I first noticed him in Richard Jewel movie. Great writing not like some other stupid writings that insult one's intelligence, also well made. So rare to find a quality show nowadays so much garbage out there, glad found this. Thank you Apple TV they have better quality Originals.

Perfect

Could have given it a 10, but its only 3 parts so far. Taron Egerton is elite. The story is gripping, as others said it definitely has the vibe of Mindhunter, which is one of the best series anywhere on streaming. Egerton plays with such intensity that makes it hard not to feel to be right there with him in it. A fine actor at its peak. But it would be a mistake to just leave all the credit with him. Generally the acting is fantastic. Apple + is establishing itself more and more as the leading streaming service with first class original content. Maybe it does not pump out the volume Netflix does, bit it also has not such a high amount of really stupid brainless content.

This is a series that is primed to get Egerton another emmy or actors award.

Ticks all the boxes

Outstanding on all fronts. From cinematography to story, this series is enthralling and captivating. Highly recommend. If you enjoyed True Detectives (S1), you'll enjoy this.

Whoa another top notch entry from Apple Tv

I am starting to think Apple TV is the new HBO. I actually saw clips of this on Tik Tok of all places and my interest was peaked. So I decided to tune in and wow I was not disspointed.

I love true crime stuff and jail shows/movies so this scratched that particular itch really well. This is based off a true story too, although I am always skeptical about how much is embellished for the show vs what really happened.

The trailer for this show tells it all it's basically a drug dealer trying to get a confession from a guy about crimes committed but oh man the execution of that idea is well done here. It is only 6 episodes and I burned through them in a couple days I couldn't stop watching.

Everything about this was high quality from the acting to the sets, to even the pacing of things. The tension builds, it gets kind of confusing because at one point I found I was actually liking the bad guy, until a certain point in the movie. The characters relationships felt genuine, you felt like you were locked up with them.

Well done, would recommend to anyone into crime dramas.

Incredible acting

Some of the best acting I have ever seen. The lack of the 1 star is simply because I feel like each episode could've used another 15-20 minutes of detail with it only being a 6 part mini series.

Paul Walter Hauser Delivers a Master Class

No offense to Taron Egerton, but Paul Hauser acts circles around him in this thing. It's excellent, and there's no telling how much better it could've been if Hauser had been paired up with a better matched "leading man". To be fair, they're wildly different characters, with Egerton having much less to chew on, but unfortunately that just made it even more evident that Hauser was the real star of the show and the low-key driver of the entire plot, leaving the audience on the edge of their seat playing the guessing game right up to the very end. Honestly, they could've shot this whole thing with Hauser playing opposite a mop in a googly eyed bucket and it'd only lose one star from me.

Paul Walter Hauser unquestionably deserved the Emmy, the Golden Globe, and every other bit of praise and accolades he received for this role. To somehow simultaneously elicit everything from fear to compassion, confusion to loathing, surprise to misery, and optimism to anxiety from an audience throughout a six-hour performance is nothing short of a genuinely exceptional achievement. And what a great shock it was coming from a gentleman who's known to be so naturally funny and a brilliant comedian. Skills. Range. Bravo.

acting out a true story

Exceptionally well written, on the edge of my seat. Good! I felt like I was in the prison with Larry Hall's Brilliance. Jimmy Keene was compelling and did Brave. I would like to have seen "Blackbird" on the silver screen. I guarantee that those who watch this movie will want more episodes. If you want to fill your night with binge-worthy TV, Black Bird should be at the top of your choices. The mind is so complex. I wonder if Psychology/ Sociology majors attending university would use the life of Larry Hall as a case study into psychological disorders. Apple TV executives did well streaming Black Bird!

So convincing that I forgot it was television

Spoiler-free review: Worth your time. If you like true crime, definitely give this one a watch.

You should know up-front that the show is based on a true story, so if you see other reviews by people who were "disappointed" with a "predictable ending," they either didn't realize it's a true story or just missed the point.

Taron Egerton, Paul Hauser, Sepideh Moafi, Greg Kinnear, and Ray Liotta (RIP) were so good and convincing that not only did I stay up late to binge in one sitting, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. IMO, it was one of those shows that makes you forget you're watching TV - amazing acting and storytelling all around. I'm also grateful the victims' stories were told alongside the main plot. I'm sure there were some embellishments here and there, but nothing that happened made me think "no way that's real." I also researched the case afterward and felt they did a very satisfactory job portraying the horror and tragedy. It was frustrating and shocking and sad, just as the real thing is.

Overall, very impressed by this miniseries and absolutely recommend.

Excellent miniseries.

This is an easy review to write because I don't have to explain away why I thought it was lacking or why I give it a poor review. It's an excellent miniseries that is gripping, disturbing, and powerful. The fact that the story is true is amazing and adds to the bingability of this show. The story follows the events surrounding a minimum security drug offender who gets a chance to reduce or commute his sentence if he works with the FBI to help gather confessions and evidence from a convicted child-killer who is up for appeal due to accusations of coerced confession. The story by itself is a great one, but the characters (as well as possible embellishments of what happens inside the maximum security prison) really bring this to a top notch level. Acting across the board was at least very good, all the way to excellent. Paul Walter Hauser provides an excellent+ performance as Larry Hall. His ability to create a complex and atypical character is astounding. I don't know how much he studied and emulated the personality of Larry Hall vs. How much he embellished for the sake of the show itself, but it's VERY compelling. I really didn't know Taron Egerton or Sepideh Moafi before this show, and they were both quite good. Script and music are also great. No lapses in plausibility and no unrealistic or poorly constructed dialogue. 9/10 is the lowest possible score for this miniseries.

Black Bird - Well written, Direction & Responsible

It's always difficult to review/rate a show that depicts pain ... as it's always easy to relax and watch what happened vs how it actually feels ..

Black Bird deserves our time and attention for not only the story told but Apple's & team approach to taking on such a sensitive and painful topic, carefully piece it together and share the stories from every character's perspective ... and in the end still doing justice to what matters i.e. Not glamorize the killer ... unlike almost all Netflix shows ..

While Netflix has come up with a nice recipe of making biopics and documentaries on heinous crimes (Anna Delvy etc) and killers that eventually will appeal to mass .. making a responsible show is what keeps the sanity alive for the masses ..

Black Bird does this .. good cast, acting , well written script , direction and most importantly responsible and concise ( 6 episodes ) makes it one of the best shows in 2022.

Outstanding

Overall this is such a good series. While the subject matter is difficult to comprehend, the story should be told. And no question they made the very best series with what they had to work with. The acting, the directing, the script is so riveting it's hard not to be fully engulfed in the show. The acting is so fantastic I really can't accurately describe it in this review. All I can say is the families affected by this evil person have all my sympathy and prayers. So worth watching and hopefully prison justice will eventually prevail on the guy...

Grabs you from the very beginning

Very well acted all the way around. Normally I am not a true crime fan in particular but Black Bird seemed interesting from the get go and hasn't disappointed for even a second. The plot is obviously based on disturbing true events which does shake you because of how well the show pulls you in. Very well done.

Paul Walter Hauser steals the show!

What a show this turned out to be, the acting and cast is perfect especially the two leads Taaron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser.

Story is at a perfect pace and always keeps your interest, the way paul walter Hauser can go from happy to crazy in a snap of the fingers was creepy.

9/10 for me :)

A riveting, edge of your seat ride from beginning to end!

Most 1 hour tv shows are boring. Too much useless dialogue and drawn out scenes. NOT this show! There's zero fat to trim off this phenomenal writing. Tight, top notch storytelling at its finest. Incredible acting. My favorite show since Mare of Easttown. Watch it now. You won't regret it.
