That's exactly what it is - a modern buck show. Taking Black bodies, Black trauma, Black history and turning it into spectacle for audiences to gawk at. The supernatural elements just give it a thin veneer of "artistic vision" to hide what it really is.
Those old minstrel and buck shows were about reducing Black people to entertainment, to something exotic and dangerous and thrilling for white consumption. This feels like the same energy with better production values.
Even with Black actors, a Black director - it's still that same dynamic. Still turning real suffering into a show. Still saying the actual horror wasn't enough, we need to dress it up, make it "fun" scary instead of real scary.
And the worst part is it'll probably be praised as "bold filmmaking" and "elevated horror" when really it's just the latest version of putting Black pain on display for profit. Same show, different stage.
Your ancestors' real terror gets turned into two hours of popcorn entertainment, and we're supposed to celebrate it because it has good cinematography.

I've been alive for 34 years and I have no life. I'm american, I understand all the cultures, I watch so many different shows. But this show is like a cheap imitation of a good show. It feels really soulless and I have not laughed at one episode. I just put it on and like right now it's on in the background. It's just filling the void. The writing is not go. Shane gillis acting feels very lazy. This show feels like it's mediocre, like a high school kid made this show. Netflix feels like idiocracy. The quality of tv has gone down the drain now that the gate keeps are gone. Shane gillis is a ok stand u comedian and his podcast is ok, but him acting? What is this?
